What changed and why the date matters
UIDAI first made online document update free for three months, from 15 March 2023 to 14 June 2023. It has extended the free window several times since. The latest extension covers 15 June 2026 to 14 June 2027. Angel One reports that it came through a UIDAI office memorandum dated 13 May 2026. UIDAI’s current charges list shows the free online facility “till 14.06.2027”.
Centre fees went up on 1 October 2025. Demographic updates rose from ₹50 to ₹75 and biometric updates from ₹100 to ₹125, as ID Tech Wire reported. The same report says a further increase is planned from 1 October 2028: ₹90 for demographic and ₹150 for biometric updates. Note that UIDAI’s FAQ page still quotes an older ₹50 fee for documents at a centre, while its charges list shows ₹75.
Who should update documents
UIDAI suggests updating your PoI and PoA at least once every 10 years from the date your Aadhaar number was generated, and sooner if it contacts you. The Aadhaar (Enrolment and Update) Regulations, 2016 provide for this 10-year update.
It is worth doing if:
- you enrolled 10 or more years ago and have never updated anything
- UIDAI has sent you a message asking you to update documents
- banks, telecom operators or scheme portals often fail to verify your Aadhaar
UIDAI says fresh documents help accurate authentication and service delivery. Non-resident Indians can update online or at a centre while they are in India.
Accepted POI and POA documents
UIDAI’s FAQ lists these common documents. The full list is in its supporting documents PDF.
| Accepted as | Common documents |
|---|---|
| Both PoI and PoA | Indian passport; ration card; voter ID; domicile or resident certificate; MGNREGA job card; labour card; public sector bank passbook with photo and a branch manager’s certificate |
| PoI only | PAN or e-PAN; driving licence; CGHS card; school leaving or transfer certificate with photo; marksheet or certificate with photo from a recognised board or university |
| PoA only | Electricity, water, gas, telephone or broadband bill up to 3 months old; signed and stamped bank or post office passbook with photo; bank, post office or credit card statement up to 3 months old; registered rent or lease agreement; property tax receipt up to 1 year old |
Your documents must meet these rules:
- Each document must be currently valid and issued in your own name.
- A PoI document must show at least your name and photograph.
- The address you enter must match the address on the PoA document.
- Scans must be clear colour copies of the originals.
The last two points come from UIDAI’s reasons for rejecting online address requests, and are worth following here too.
Online update on myAadhaar
- Go to myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in and log in with your Aadhaar number and the OTP sent to your registered mobile.
- Click Document Update.
- Check the name, date of birth and address already on record. If they are correct, continue.
- Choose your PoI document from the dropdown list and upload a scan.
- Choose your PoA document from the dropdown list and upload a scan.
- Review and submit the request.
- Note the Service Request Number (SRN) and download the acknowledgement.
If your mobile number is not registered with Aadhaar, you cannot use the online service. Visit an Aadhaar centre to add it. UIDAI’s new Aadhaar app also offers mobile number and address updates. You can find nearby centres on the Bhuvan Aadhaar portal.
If your details themselves are wrong, a document upload will not fix them. Name, gender and date of birth are changed at an Aadhaar centre. Your address can be changed online or at a centre with a valid PoA document.
Online vs centre: fees
UIDAI’s charges list sets these fees:
| Service | Fee |
|---|---|
| Document update on the myAadhaar portal | Free until 14 June 2027 |
| Document update at an Aadhaar centre | ₹75 |
| Demographic update (name, gender, date of birth, address, mobile or email) on its own | ₹75 |
| Demographic update done together with a biometric update | Free |
| Biometric update (fingerprint, iris, photo), other than the free child updates | ₹125 |
Pay only through the official portal or at the centre. UIDAI’s charges list is the reference if a centre asks for more.
Tracking your request
After you submit, the SRN appears on screen and arrives by SMS on your registered mobile. Log in to myAadhaar and use Check Aadhaar Update Status to follow it.
If the request is rejected, check the rejection against the document rules above, then apply again with a clearer scan or a different document. The free window is open until 14 June 2027, so a second attempt costs nothing.
Once the update goes through, download a fresh e-Aadhaar. Your Aadhaar is used for KYC across services, including PAN-Aadhaar linking and government schemes, so a current record saves trouble later.
