You are entitled to one free full credit report every calendar year from each credit information company, including your credit score. That is not a marketing offer. It is an RBI direction, circular DBR.CID.BC.No.10/20.16.042/2016-17 dated 1 September 2016, in force since 1 January 2017. The report must be the same detailed version lenders see, delivered electronically, and each company has to publish on its own website how to get it. If a site is charging you for a first look, you are paying for something the regulator already made free.
What exactly does RBI entitle you to for free?
The circular uses the term free full credit report, or FFCR. Three parts of it matter.
- It shows “the latest position of the credit institutions’ exposure to the individual”. That means every live account, not a summary.
- It includes the credit score itself.
- It is “the same as appearing in the most detailed version of the reports on the individual provided to credit institutions”. You see what the lender sees.
The frequency is once per calendar year, per credit information company. There is more than one bureau in India. TransUnion CIBIL is the best known; Experian, Equifax and CRIF High Mark also operate here. Each owes you its own free full report, and each holds a different picture of you, because not every lender reports to every bureau.
Free score or free full report — which are you being offered?
| What is offered | What it costs | What you get | How often | Basis |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free full credit report from the bureau | Nothing | Score plus the full account-level report | Once a calendar year, per bureau | RBI circular of 1 Sept 2016 |
| “Free credit score” on a comparison site | Your contact details | Usually a score and a partial summary | Often monthly | Commercial arrangement, not a right |
| Bureau subscription | Paid | Refreshed report and monitoring alerts | Monthly or on demand | Commercial product |
| Report shown inside your bank app | Nothing | Score, sometimes a limited report | Varies by bank | Commercial arrangement |
The distinction is the whole point. A score on its own is a number you cannot act on. The full report is where the wrong account, the closed loan still showing open, and the stray settled flag actually live. Read our guide to what is in a credit report before you look at yours.
Why does a free score site want your mobile number?
Because the score is the product being given away and you are the product being sold. Most free-score portals in India are lead generation for loan and card sales. That is not automatically bad. It becomes bad when the site’s ranked list of offers is ordered by what pays them, not by what suits you.
Two practical rules. First, go to the bureau directly for your annual free full report, so you get the complete file rather than the marketing version. Second, before you click any pre-approved offer on those sites, check whether it triggers a formal application. That is where your report picks up hard enquiries.
Does checking your own credit score lower it?
No. Looking at your own report is a soft enquiry. It is recorded on your file, but it does not affect the score. What affects the score is a hard enquiry, which happens when a lender pulls your report because you applied for credit. Several hard enquiries in a short window read as distress and can push the score down. The mechanics are in our page on hard versus soft enquiries.
So check as often as you like. What you must not do is apply to five lenders in a fortnight to “see what you qualify for”.
What if the report is wrong?
Dispute it, and note that RBI put a price on delay. Under the framework for compensation for delayed updation or rectification of credit information, circular RBI/2023-24/72 dated 26 October 2023 and effective from 26 April 2024, you are owed ₹100 per calendar day if your complaint is not resolved within thirty days. The thirty days is split: twenty-one days for the credit institution and nine days for the credit information company.
That compensation is not paid automatically in practice. You have to know it exists and ask for it. File the dispute with the bureau, keep the reference number, and diarise day thirty-one. Our page on disputing a credit report sets out the steps.
What the free score will not tell you
A score is a ranking, not an explanation. It will not tell you which single account is dragging it, how close you are to a lender’s cut-off, or whether the lender you want uses that bureau at all. Lenders also run their own internal scorecards on top of the bureau score. A 780 is not an approval.
Use the score to detect change and the report to find the cause. If the number is lower than you expected, start with our guide on improving a credit score rather than applying anywhere new.
Frequently asked questions
Is the free CIBIL score really free, or is there a catch?
One full report per calendar year is genuinely free and mandated by RBI. Anything beyond that from the same bureau is usually a paid subscription. Comparison sites offering unlimited free scores are funding it through loan and card referrals.
How many free credit reports can I get in a year?
One from each credit information company, per calendar year, under the 2016 RBI circular. Since more than one bureau operates in India, staggering them a few months apart gives you several checkpoints across the year at no cost.
Why is my score different on two different sites?
Because they are different bureaus with different data and different models. A lender may report to one and not another. A gap between bureaus is normal. A large unexplained gap is worth investigating, and our page comparing the credit bureaus explains what drives it.
Do I get compensation if the bureau takes too long to fix an error?
Yes, ₹100 per calendar day beyond thirty days, under RBI circular RBI/2023-24/72 effective 26 April 2024. Ask for it in writing when you escalate. If it is refused, the RBI Ombudsman route is open to you.
What is a good score to aim for?
There is no single cut-off, because every lender sets its own. What we can say is that lenders publish tiered pricing grids, and the band you fall in changes the rate you are offered. Our page on what counts as a good credit score covers how the bands work.
