If your PAN card is lost or damaged, order a reprint from the agency that issued it, Protean (formerly NSDL) or UTIITSL. The reprint costs ₹50 for an Indian address and keeps your PAN number the same. Do not apply for a new PAN: holding two can attract a ₹10,000 penalty.

Key facts

Reprint vs applying again: why a second PAN is illegal

A reprint is a fresh copy of the same card, with the same number, name and date of birth. A new application creates a second PAN, which you are not allowed to hold. The UTIITSL portal warns that a penalty of ₹10,000 can be levied for having more than one PAN, citing Section 272B of the Income-tax Act, 1961.

Use the reprint only when nothing on the card needs to change. If your name, date of birth, photo or address is wrong, file a change or correction request instead; it also produces a new card with the same PAN. UTIITSL offers a free address update through Aadhaar e-KYC.

Find which agency issued your PAN

Each agency reprints only the cards it processed. Try these checks in order:

ItemDetails
Your old acknowledgement.Protean gives a 15-digit acknowledgement number. UTIITSL gives a coupon number.
The back of the card. Most cards print a “please inform / return to” address that names the issuing unit, such as “Income Tax PAN Services Unit, NSDL”.
Instant e-PAN.If you got your PAN free through Aadhaar on the e-Filing portal, both Protean and UTIITSL accept your reprint request.

If you still cannot tell, try one portal. If it will not accept your PAN, use the other.

Reprint steps on Protean

  1. Open the Protean “Request for Reprint of PAN Card” page at onlineservices.proteantech.in.
  2. Enter your PAN, Aadhaar number and date of birth. GSTIN is optional.
  3. Tick the consent box for Aadhaar authentication and submit.
  4. Check the details shown and choose to receive the OTP.
  5. Enter the OTP to authenticate through Aadhaar.
  6. Pay ₹50 online (₹959 for a foreign address).
  7. Save the acknowledgement and use it to track the request.

Protean dispatches the card to the communication address held by the Income Tax Department, so a card cannot be sent to a new address through this route.

Reprint steps on UTIITSL

  1. Go to pan.utiitsl.com and click “Click to Reprint” under Reprint PAN Card.
  2. Enter your PAN and date of birth. Aadhaar number and GSTIN fields are also on the form.
  3. Enter the captcha and submit.
  4. Confirm the details shown and pay ₹50 online (₹959 for a foreign address).
  5. Save the payment receipt and reference number.

If the address shown is wrong or the request fails, UTIITSL’s helpdesk is on 033 40802999. The same portal has an option to regenerate a reprint request.

Reprint fee and delivery time

Agency Indian address Foreign address
Protean (NSDL) ₹50 ₹959
UTIITSL ₹50 ₹959

Both fees include taxes. Neither agency publishes a fixed delivery time for reprints. Protean’s own guide says a card usually takes a few weeks to arrive. Keep the acknowledgement until it does. Our note on what each PAN card status means helps you read the tracking result.

Using the e-PAN as a stop-gap

You do not have to wait for the card. The Income Tax Department’s FAQ says an e-PAN “is a valid form of PAN”. You can download it:

ItemDetails
Proteanfree if your PAN was allotted or changed in the last 30 days.
UTIITSLfree if the e-PAN was issued within the last month, otherwise ₹8.26. It is sent only to the email ID in PAN records, after an email OTP.
e-Filing portalif you got an Instant e-PAN, go to Instant e-PAN > Check Status / Download e-PAN, enter Aadhaar and the OTP, then click Download e-PAN. This is free.

Our guide to Instant e-PAN through Aadhaar covers that route in detail. The Instant e-PAN service itself is only for people who do not yet have a PAN.

Report a lost card: is an FIR needed?

Neither online reprint form asks for an FIR or police complaint. Protean’s guide still advises reporting a lost card to the police. A complaint copy is useful if someone misuses your PAN for a loan or account.

After a loss, check your Form 26AS and credit report for transactions you do not recognise, and keep your PAN linked to Aadhaar. Our PAN and Aadhaar linking page shows how to check. If you find loans or tax entries you did not make, a chartered accountant or lawyer can help you respond.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a PAN card reprint cost?

₹50 including taxes for delivery in India and ₹959 for a foreign address, on both Protean and UTIITSL.

Will my PAN number change after a reprint?

No. A reprint is a copy of your existing card with the same PAN and details.

Can I apply for a new PAN if I lost my card?

No. Apply for a reprint. Holding two PANs can attract a ₹10,000 penalty, according to UTIITSL.

Can I change my address while ordering a reprint?

No. The reprint is only for cards with no change in details. Use a change request, or UTIITSL’s free Aadhaar e-KYC address update, first.

Is an e-PAN valid in place of the card?

Yes. The Income Tax Department’s FAQ calls the e-PAN a valid form of PAN.

Do I need an FIR to get a PAN reprint?

The online forms do not ask for one. Reporting the loss to police is still sensible if you fear misuse.

Can I reprint a PAN from the NSDL site?

NSDL’s PAN services now run as Protean eGov Technologies. Use the reprint page at onlineservices.proteantech.in.
