PM-KMY is voluntary. It sits alongside PM-Kisan, the ₹6,000-a-year income support scheme, and you can use your PM-Kisan instalments to pay the contribution. The Ministry of Agriculture confirmed the same terms in a Lok Sabha reply on 4 August 2026.

Who can join

You qualify if you are a landholding small or marginal farmer, man or woman, aged 18 to 40, owning cultivable land up to 2 hectares as per state land records. PIB’s 2024 explainer adds that your name should be in the land records as on 1 August 2019. Husband and wife can each join separately, and each gets their own ₹3,000 pension at 60.

You cannot join if you are:

  • covered by another statutory social security scheme such as NPS, ESIC or EPFO;
  • enrolled in PM Shram Yogi Maan-dhan (PM-SYM) or the traders’ pension scheme (PM-LVM);
  • an institutional landholder;
  • a current or former holder of a constitutional post, minister, MP, MLA, MLC, mayor or district panchayat chairperson;
  • a serving or retired government or PSU officer or employee, other than Multi Tasking Staff, Class IV or Group D;
  • someone who paid income tax in the last assessment year;
  • a practising doctor, engineer, lawyer, chartered accountant or architect.

States can accept a self-declaration on these points. A false declaration makes you ineligible for the benefit.

Contribution by entry age

The contribution is fixed at entry and does not change later. Selected ages from the official chart:

Entry age You pay a month Centre pays a month Total into fund Your total until 60
18 ₹55 ₹55 ₹110 ₹27,720 (42 years)
20 ₹61 ₹61 ₹122 ₹29,280 (40 years)
25 ₹80 ₹80 ₹160 ₹33,600 (35 years)

35 ₹150 ₹150 ₹300 ₹45,000 (25 years)
40 ₹200 ₹200 ₹400 ₹48,000 (20 years)

Joining earlier costs less per month and less in total. You can pay monthly, quarterly, every four months or half-yearly; each payment falls due on the same date as your enrolment. States may choose to share a farmer’s contribution.

How to enrol

Carry your Aadhaar card and bank passbook (or account details) to the nearest CSC. A mobile number is optional but lets you get SMS alerts.

  1. Visit the CSC and ask the Village Level Entrepreneur (VLE) to enrol you in PM-KMY.
  2. Give your Aadhaar number, name, date of birth, spouse and nominee details and address.
  3. Share bank details from your passbook; the VLE checks them.
  4. Confirm your mobile number with the OTP.
  5. Sign the printed enrolment-cum-auto-debit mandate form.
  6. Pay the first contribution, which the VLE processes online after uploading the form, and take the receipt.
  7. Collect your PM-KMY pension card with its unique pension account number.

You do not pay the CSC anything; the Department of Agriculture pays the CSC ₹30 per enrolment. You can also enrol through the PM-Kisan nodal officer in your district. PIB has named pmkmy.gov.in for online self-registration, but the site did not load when we checked on 17 September 2026. Note that maandhan.in now lists only the labour ministry’s PM-SYM and traders’ schemes.

Your date of birth cannot be changed after enrolment. To correct bank or other details, go back to the CSC with your PM-KMY number and Aadhaar.

Paying contributions from PM-Kisan benefits

If you receive PM-Kisan, you can sign a mandate so the contribution is auto-debited from the bank account where your PM-Kisan money arrives. PM-Kisan pays ₹6,000 a year in three instalments of ₹2,000, which is more than even the highest annual PM-KMY contribution of ₹2,400. If you are not a PM-Kisan beneficiary, or do not want this, the mandate covers your regular bank account instead. Our guide to PM-Kisan registration explains how to join that scheme first.

LIC raises the debit through its sponsor bank on three cycle dates each month: the 1st, 11th and 21st. If a debit fails, it is retried in later cycles for up to six months:

ItemDetails
Within one monthyou pay the missed contribution with no late fee.
After one montharrears carry interest or a late fee at the rate the government sets.
After six months unpaidthe account becomes dormant and debits stop. You can revive it by paying all dues with interest.

Keep enough balance in the linked account on the due date.

Exit, death and family pension rules

ItemDetails
Leaving the schemeyou can exit if you no longer want to continue. Your own contributions come back with interest; the government’s matching share goes back to the fund. According to myScheme, the government’s scheme portal, an exit within 10 years earns savings bank interest; a later exit earns the higher of fund earnings or savings bank interest.
Becoming ineligiblethe account stays open but the government’s 50% stops. You may pay the full contribution yourself, and at 60 you can withdraw your contributions with savings bank interest.
Death before 60your spouse can keep paying and get the same pension from your vesting date. If the spouse does not continue, your contributions with interest are paid to the spouse, or to the nominee if there is no spouse.
Death after 60your spouse gets a family pension of 50%, ₹1,500 a month, if not already a PM-KMY pensioner. After both die, the corpus returns to the fund; children get nothing.
No commutationyou cannot take any part of the pension as a lump sum.
