A step-up SIP raises your instalment by a fixed amount or percentage every six or twelve months, as chosen when you register the SIP.

A step-up SIP, also called a top-up SIP, raises your SIP instalment automatically at set intervals, usually every six months or every year. You choose the increase when you register the SIP, as a fixed rupee amount or, where the fund house allows it, a percentage. The fund house then debits the higher amount through your bank mandate.
Key facts
Step-up is a facility each fund house designs for itself, so the rules differ. Two examples from current fund house documents:
| Rule | SBI Mutual Fund | Franklin Templeton MF |
|---|---|---|
| Step-up interval | Half-yearly or yearly for monthly SIPs; yearly for quarterly SIPs | Yearly, for monthly and quarterly SIPs |
| Default interval if not chosen | Half-yearly | Not applicable (yearly only) |
| Minimum step-up | ₹500, in multiples of ₹500 | Multiples of 5% or ₹500 |
| Payment mode | ECS or direct debit | Direct debit, bill pay, net banking, NACH (maximum amount) or e-mandate |
| Changing it later | Not allowed; cancel and register a fresh SIP | New request at least 20 days before the instalment date |
UTI Mutual Fund’s scheme documents offer half-yearly or yearly step-ups by an amount you specify.
If you invest in an ELSS (tax-saver) fund, every instalment, including stepped-up ones, is locked in for three years from its own allotment date.
How a step-up SIP works
Say you start a monthly SIP of ₹5,000 and add a yearly step-up of ₹1,000. Your instalments would be:
| Year | Monthly instalment | Invested that year |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | ₹5,000 | ₹60,000 |
| 2 | ₹6,000 | ₹72,000 |
| 3 | ₹7,000 | ₹84,000 |
| 4 | ₹8,000 | ₹96,000 |
| 5 | ₹9,000 | ₹1,08,000 |
| Total | ₹4,20,000 |
A flat ₹5,000 SIP over the same five years invests ₹3,00,000. The step-up adds ₹1,20,000 of your own money. It does not change the fund’s returns. To see what different amounts could grow to, try the SIP calculator. If you are new to SIPs, start with our explainer on what a SIP is.
Fixed amount vs percentage top-up
A fixed top-up adds the same rupee amount each time. The instalment grows in a straight line, so the increase shrinks as a share of the instalment: ₹1,000 is 20% of ₹5,000 but only 11% of ₹9,000.
A percentage top-up raises the instalment by a set share of its current value, so the increases compound. A ₹10,000 SIP with a 10% yearly step-up becomes ₹11,000, then ₹12,100, then ₹13,310, then ₹14,641. Franklin Templeton rounds the rupee value of a percentage step-up to the nearest ₹100, so the actual debits can differ slightly.
SBI Mutual Fund and UTI Mutual Fund describe their top-ups in fixed amounts. Franklin Templeton offers both. Check the SIP form or the scheme’s Statement of Additional Information before you pick one.
Setting it up and mandate limits
- Pick the scheme, the starting instalment and the SIP date.
- On the SIP form or online screen, select the step-up or top-up option.
- Enter the step-up amount or percentage and the interval. Some fund houses also ask for the month and year until which the step-up should run.
- Work out your largest future instalment. A ₹5,000 SIP stepping up by ₹1,000 a year reaches ₹14,000 in year 10.
- Register a bank mandate with a maximum amount that covers that figure.
- Submit the form. Franklin Templeton asks for a new SIP with step-up to run for at least 2 years.
The mandate limit matters because step-up works only through debits the fund house starts, such as NACH or direct debit. Invesco Mutual Fund’s SIP terms say that if a stepped-up instalment exceeds the mandate’s maximum amount, it is processed only up to that maximum. Franklin Templeton asks for an alternate mandate if the existing one cannot carry the step-up.
To add a step-up to an SIP that is already running, Franklin Templeton needs at least 3 monthly or 1 quarterly instalment left. SBI Mutual Fund does not allow changes to top-up details, so you would cancel the SIP and register a fresh one with the top-up.
Changing or stopping the top-up
- SBI Mutual Fund: top-up details cannot be modified once enrolled. Cancel the SIP and start a new one.
- Franklin Templeton: a step-up or cancellation request must reach the fund house at least 20 days before the instalment date. A new step-up request overrides the earlier one and applies to the current stepped-up amount. Cancelling the step-up does not cancel the SIP.
Other fund houses have their own rules. The SIP section of the scheme documents on the fund house website sets them out.
Lock-in and tax for each instalment
Each SIP instalment buys units on its own date. That date drives the lock-in, the exit load and the tax on each batch of units.
| Item | Details |
|---|---|
| ELSS lock-in | units can be redeemed only three years after the date they were allotted. A step-up in year 4 is free only in year 7. |
| Order of redemption | fund houses redeem units first-in, first-out, subject to any lock-in. See how to redeem mutual funds for the steps. |
| Holding period | units of an equity-oriented fund are short-term if held for 12 months or less, under Section 2(101) of the Income-tax Act, 2025. |
| Tax rates | short-term gains on equity-oriented fund units sold with securities transaction tax are taxed at 20% (Section 196). Long-term gains above ₹1,25,000 are taxed at 12.5% (Section 198). Our mutual fund taxation page covers debt and hybrid funds. |
| ELSS deduction | ELSS investments count towards the ₹1,50,000 limit under Section 123 of the 2025 Act, which is available only in the old tax regime. Once a step-up takes your yearly ELSS investment past what fits in that limit, the extra gets no deduction. |
Frequently asked questions
Is a step-up SIP the same as a top-up SIP?
Yes. Fund houses use both names for the facility that raises your SIP instalment by a set amount or percentage at fixed intervals.
What is the minimum step-up amount?
It depends on the fund house. SBI Mutual Fund sets it at ₹500 in multiples of ₹500. Franklin Templeton allows multiples of 5% or ₹500.
Can I add a step-up to my existing SIP?
Some fund houses allow it. Franklin Templeton does if enough instalments remain. SBI Mutual Fund requires you to cancel the SIP and register a new one with the top-up.
What happens if my mandate limit is lower than the stepped-up instalment?
The stepped-up amount may not be debited in full. Invesco Mutual Fund, for example, processes the top-up only up to the mandate’s maximum amount, so register a mandate that covers your largest future instalment.
Can I stop the step-up but keep the SIP?
Franklin Templeton says cancelling a step-up does not cancel the SIP. At SBI Mutual Fund, top-up details cannot be changed, so you would cancel the SIP and register a new one without the top-up.
Does a step-up SIP give higher returns?
No. It raises the amount you invest, not the fund’s return. Returns depend on the market and the scheme.
Is each stepped-up ELSS instalment locked in separately?
Yes. Each instalment is locked in for three years from the date its units were allotted.
