The RBI does not approve forex brokers or trading apps for retail speculation. An Indian resident can trade currency legally only through a SEBI-registered stockbroker, in the currency derivatives segment of NSE, BSE or MSE, or with an RBI-authorised bank or platform for a permitted purpose. Apps that offer margin trading in pairs like EUR/USD from offshore are not authorised, and many appear on the RBI’s Alert List.

Key facts

Question Position on 17 September 2026
Does RBI licence retail forex brokers? No. RBI authorises dealers, money changers and electronic trading platforms (ETPs); stockbrokers are registered by SEBI
Legal route for an individual trader Exchange-traded currency futures and options on NSE, BSE or MSE, through a SEBI-registered broker
SEBI-registered brokers in the currency derivatives segment 2,699 on SEBI’s list as of 16 September 2026
RBI-authorised ETPs 12 platforms run by 5 operators, list updated 16 September 2026; only FX-Retail serves retail customers
RBI Alert List 95 unauthorised entities, updated 19 November 2025; not exhaustive
Rupee currency derivatives Only to hedge an underlying exposure (RBI directions in force from 3 May 2024)
Sending margin abroad under LRS Not permitted

Search results and ads often call an app “RBI approved”. The RBI has no licence of that kind for retail forex trading. Two regulators share the ground:

  • RBI authorises persons to deal in foreign exchange under the Foreign Exchange Management Act, 1999 (FEMA). These are mostly banks and money changers. It also authorises ETPs under the Master Direction – Reserve Bank of India (Electronic Trading Platforms) Directions, 2025.
  • SEBI registers the stockbrokers who give you access to currency futures and options on Indian exchanges.

So a lawful forex trading app in India is a SEBI-registered broker’s app that offers the exchange currency segment. Our page on whether forex trading is legal in India covers the FEMA rules and penalties in full; this guide focuses on checking a broker or app.

Which platforms does the RBI actually authorise?

RBI’s list of authorised ETPs, updated 16 September 2026, names these operators:

Operator Platforms Used by
Clearing Corporation of India (CCIL) FX-CLEAR (with the FX-Retail module), OPTIX and money-market and bond platforms Banks and institutions; FX-Retail for bank customers
ICAP IL India i-Stream Institutions
Three Sixty Trading Networks (India) TEX/SEP, 360TGTX Institutions
Refinitiv India Transaction Services FXall, Matching Institutions
Bloomberg Tradebook India BTBS Institutions

FX-Retail is a way to buy or sell US dollars against rupees at a transparent price through your bank, in cash, tom or spot settlement. Individuals and MSMEs with a genuine need can use it. It is a conversion platform, not a place to speculate on currency moves.

Apps on the RBI Alert List

The Alert List names entities that are not authorised to deal in forex or run a forex ETP, and websites that promote them. Several apps sold to Indians as “trusted” or “regulated abroad” are on it, including:

  • Ava Trade, Forex.com, Pepperstone, XM, HF Markets and HotForex;
  • IQ Option, Olymp Trade, Binomo, Quotex and Pocket Option;
  • eToro, Exness, OctaFX, IC Markets, Tickmill and Just Markets;
  • MetaTrader 4 and MetaTrader 5.

A foreign licence does not make a platform legal for Indian residents. The RBI also says the list is not exhaustive: a name missing from it should not be assumed to be authorised.

How to check if a forex trading app is SEBI registered

  1. Find the legal company name of the broker behind the app, usually in the app’s “About” or footer section.
  2. Open SEBI’s Recognised Intermediaries page and choose “Registered Stock Brokers in Currency Derivative Segment”.
  3. Search for the company name and note its registration number and the exchanges it is a member of.
  4. Match the registration number with the one printed on the app, website and contract note.
  5. Check RBI’s Alert List for both the brand name and the website address.
  6. Confirm that you will fund the account from your own Indian bank account in rupees. Walk away if asked to pay a personal UPI ID, send crypto or remit money abroad.

A broker registered only for equity is not enough. Currency futures and options need the currency derivatives segment.

What you can trade through a registered broker

Indian exchanges list futures and options on rupee pairs, including USD-INR, EUR-INR, GBP-INR and JPY-INR on NSE. The RBI’s hedging directions, in force from 3 May 2024, allow rupee currency derivatives only when you have an underlying exposure. Positions up to USD 100 million across exchanges need no documentary proof, but the exposure must exist. See currency derivatives on NSE for contract details.

You also cannot fund an overseas trading account under the Liberalised Remittance Scheme. The RBI says LRS remittances cannot be used for margins or margin calls abroad. The LRS limit itself, USD 2,50,000 a year, is explained in our LRS and TCS guide.

Warning signs and where to complain

  • “RBI approved” or “SEBI approved” with no registration number you can verify.
  • Positions worth 100 times your deposit or more, bonuses on deposits, or guaranteed returns.
  • Agents on WhatsApp, Telegram or Instagram offering “forex training” or signal groups.
  • Deposits to personal bank accounts, UPI IDs or crypto wallets.

For a complaint against a SEBI-registered broker, use SEBI’s SCORES portal. For an unauthorised platform, the RBI points to the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (cybercrime.gov.in) or helpline 1930. Our guide to reporting financial fraud has the steps.
