None of them is a bank. Fi, Jupiter and Niyo are apps. The account, the deposit insurance and the licence all sit with a partner bank behind the app. That difference sounds fussy until the app goes away. That is exactly what happened to Fi in March 2026. It wound down banking services and sent 3.5 million customers to Federal Bank’s own app.
So here is the honest answer to “which is the best digital bank in India”. Pick the bank first. Then decide whether the app on top of it is worth anything to you. On that test, the strongest option for most people is a plain savings account at a bank with a good app of its own. The neobank layer adds design. It does not add safety, and it can be withdrawn.
Which regulated bank is actually behind each neobank app?
Every one of these apps discloses its partner bank somewhere in its own terms. It is worth reading, because that bank is your counterparty for everything that matters.
| App | Regulated bank behind it | What it actually is | Status, as of September 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fi | Federal Bank | An app layer over a Federal Bank savings account | Banking services wound down; customers moved to Federal Bank’s FedMobile app |
| Jupiter | Federal Bank, CSB Bank and other RBI-authorised partners | An app layer; Jupiter states it is not a bank and holds no banking licence | Operating |
| Niyo | DCB Bank, SBM Bank (India), Equitas Small Finance Bank | Travel-focused accounts and cards issued by the partner banks | Operating; Equitas-issued debit cards now carry a forex markup |
Sources are the companies’ own published pages: fi.money, jupiter.money and goniyo.com, read on 6 September 2026. Jupiter’s disclosure is the clearest of the three. It states plainly that the company “is not a bank and does not hold or claim to hold a banking license”.
Is your money safe in a neobank account?
Your money is as safe as the partner bank, and no safer. Deposit insurance from the DICGC covers ₹5,00,000 per depositor per bank, including principal and interest. It attaches to the bank, not to the app. Say you hold ₹4,00,000 through Jupiter on Federal Bank. Add ₹3,00,000 held directly with Federal Bank. That is ₹7,00,000 at one bank, and ₹2,00,000 of it is uninsured.
People get this wrong constantly, because the app’s branding hides the bank. Work out your exposure by bank, not by app. Our page on DICGC deposit insurance sets out how the limit is applied across joint and single accounts.
What actually happens when a neobank shuts down?
Fi is the worked example, and it is more reassuring than the headlines suggested. The deposit did not vanish. The account stayed open at Federal Bank. What disappeared was the interface, the in-app support and the features layered on top — the analytics, the goals, the rules-based saving.
That is still a real cost. You lose the product you chose, you re-learn a new app, and your history may not travel with you. Fi’s own site now points users to Federal Bank for account queries. If a neobank’s tooling is the reason you opened the account, understand that the tooling is the part with no regulatory protection.
Who should use a neobank app, and who should not?
Use one if the specific feature solves a real problem. Niyo’s case is the strongest of the three, because zero forex markup on international spending is a hard cash saving, not a design preference. If you travel abroad more than once a year, that is worth having. Compare it against a forex credit card before you decide.
Do not use one as your primary salary account if you value continuity. Do not park a large balance in one without checking your total exposure to the partner bank. And do not assume the app sets the interest rate. The rate is the bank’s, and the bank can change it.
If what you want is simply a good account with a good app, look at savings accounts and salary accounts from the banks directly. Several large banks now ship better apps than they did when the neobank pitch was invented.
What should you check before opening one of these accounts?
Five things, in this order. Which bank holds the deposit. What your total balance at that bank will be, against the ₹5,00,000 insurance limit. Whether the account carries a minimum balance requirement, and what the penalty is. What the debit card charges abroad. And who you call at 2am — the app, or the bank.
The fifth question is the one people skip. Grievance redressal runs through the bank and, if unresolved, through the RBI Ombudsman scheme. An app is not a party to that. Our guide to the banking ombudsman explains the escalation path.
Frequently asked questions
Is Fi Money still working in 2026?
Fi wound down its banking services in March 2026 after ending its partnership with Federal Bank. Savings accounts opened through Fi remain live at Federal Bank and are accessed through FedMobile, the bank’s own app. The money was never at risk. The product was.
Are neobanks licensed by the RBI?
No. The RBI does not issue a neobank licence in India. These companies operate as technology partners to licensed banks. The bank holds the deposit, carries the DICGC cover and answers to the regulator. Jupiter says so in its own terms, and it is the correct way to read all of them.
Is my money insured in a Jupiter or Niyo account?
Yes, through the partner bank, up to ₹5,00,000 per depositor per bank under DICGC cover. The limit is counted per bank across all your accounts at that bank. Two apps sitting on the same partner bank share one limit, which is easy to miss.
Do neobanks pay higher interest than regular banks?
The interest is paid by the partner bank, so it is the bank’s rate, not the app’s. Some partner banks are small finance banks that pay more than large banks, but they do that for their own customers too. Compare on savings account interest rates at the bank level.
What is the safest way to use a neobank?
Treat it as a spending account, not a store of value. Keep the balance modest. Know which bank is behind it and count your exposure there. Set up net banking with the bank itself, and test it. Then no single app stands between you and your money.
