You can update the mobile number in Aadhaar in three ways: the official Aadhaar app, an Aadhaar enrolment centre, or a postman through India Post Payments Bank (IPPB). Each costs ₹75. The app needs access to your old registered number; if it is lost, or you never registered one, use a centre or a postman.

Key facts

Item Detail
Fee ₹75 (inclusive of GST); free if done at a centre along with a biometric update
Documents None for a mobile number update at a centre or through a postman
Online route Aadhaar app only (launched 28 January 2026); the myAadhaar website does not change mobile numbers
App condition OTP on the new number, OTP on the old number if the app is registered on a different SIM, and face authentication
Old number lost or never registered Visit an Aadhaar Seva Kendra or enrolment centre, or ask a postman
IPPB doorstep booking Call 155299 or 033-22029000; no doorstep charge till further notice
Processing time Up to 30 days, per UIDAI

Why the linked mobile matters

Most Aadhaar-based checks send a one-time password (OTP) to the number registered with UIDAI. If that number is old or switched off, the OTP goes nowhere. UIDAI says a registered mobile number is essential to use Aadhaar online services such as the myAadhaar portal.

Tax filing is the common place people get stuck. The e-Filing portal lets you e-verify your return with an OTP on the mobile number registered with Aadhaar, and that option also needs your PAN linked with Aadhaar. See our page on PAN, TAN and Aadhaar linking for the linking rules. Banks and other regulated entities that use Aadhaar OTP for KYC face the same problem when the number is out of date.

Which route to use

Your situation Route
You still use the number registered with Aadhaar Aadhaar app, centre or postman
You have the old number, but the app is set up on another SIM Aadhaar app (OTP on both numbers), centre or postman
Old number lost, disconnected or never registered Centre or postman only
You also need a biometric update Centre, where the mobile update is then free

UIDAI’s enrolment FAQ still says mobile update is not permitted through online mode. In practice the myAadhaar website cannot change your number, but the Aadhaar app can, as UIDAI’s app FAQ confirms. On 20 August 2026 the government said more than 60 lakh people had updated their mobile number through the app.

Update through the Aadhaar app

Download the official Aadhaar app from the Play Store or App Store. Registration asks for your Aadhaar number, a SIM choice and face authentication, and then a 6-digit PIN. One device can hold up to five Aadhaar profiles, so you can update a family member’s number from your phone if they sit for the face scan.

  1. Open the Aadhaar app and log in with your 6-digit PIN.
  2. Go to Services and choose Mobile Number Update.
  3. Enter the new mobile number and type the OTP sent to it.
  4. If the app is registered on a number other than your Aadhaar number, also enter the OTP sent to your old registered number.
  5. Complete face authentication with the phone camera.
  6. Pay the ₹75 fee in the app.
  7. Download the acknowledgement slip and note the Service Request Number (SRN).

If you cannot receive an OTP on your old number, the app will not help. Use one of the offline routes below.

Update at an Aadhaar centre

A centre operator takes your fingerprint or iris scan to confirm who you are, so you need no document and no access to the old number. You can use any Aadhaar enrolment centre, including the UIDAI-run Aadhaar Seva Kendras. Find one on the Bhuvan Aadhaar locator linked from the UIDAI site.

  1. Book a slot on bookappointment.uidai.gov.in, or walk in. Booking is free and does not need an Aadhaar-registered mobile.
  2. Carry your Aadhaar number and the new mobile number with the phone.
  3. Tell the operator you want a mobile number update.
  4. Give your fingerprint or iris scan.
  5. Pay ₹75, or nothing if you are doing a biometric update at the same visit.
  6. Keep the acknowledgement slip with the Update Request Number (URN).

Aadhaar Seva Kendras are open all 7 days, 9:30 am to 5:30 pm. Each person can book up to 2 appointments a month.

Doorstep update through IPPB

IPPB, a UIDAI registrar, lets postmen and Gramin Dak Sevaks update Aadhaar mobile numbers with a smartphone and a biometric device. UIDAI confirms that no document or old mobile number is needed for this route. The service is available at selected post offices only, so check with your local branch.

  1. Call IPPB on 155299 or 033-22029000, or ask your postman, Gramin Dak Sevak or post office.
  2. Pick a date between 2 and 10 days ahead and a slot between 11 am and 4 pm.
  3. When the postman arrives, give your Aadhaar number and new mobile number.
  4. Complete the biometric check on the postman’s device.
  5. Pay ₹75 including taxes.

IPPB says its doorstep banking service carries nil charges till further notice. The ₹75 is the UIDAI update fee.

Fee and documents

Route Fee Documents
Aadhaar app ₹75 None; OTP and face authentication
Enrolment centre, mobile only ₹75 None; biometric check
Enrolment centre, with biometric update Free for the mobile change; ₹125 for the biometric update unless an age exemption applies None for the mobile change
IPPB postman ₹75 None; biometric check

UIDAI’s charges apply to all demographic updates, so a centre should not ask for more than ₹75 for a mobile-only change. If you are overcharged, call the UIDAI helpline on 1947.

How long the update takes

UIDAI says 90% of update requests are completed within 30 days, and its app FAQ gives the same up-to-30-day window. Track the request with your SRN in the app’s Track my request option, or with the URN from the centre. Once done, UIDAI sends a notification to the new number; no letter is posted.

Wait for the update to show before you try Aadhaar OTP on the e-Filing portal or at a bank. Until then, OTPs still go to the old number. If you also need to file a return, our guide on how to file your ITR lists the other e-verification options.
