For Dubai currency exchange in India, buy UAE dirhams (AED) from an RBI-authorised bank or full-fledged money changer before you fly, within the USD 3,000 cash limit per trip. On 16 September 2026 the RBI reference rate was ₹26.1220 per dirham, so any quote you get in India or at a Dubai exchange house can be measured against that figure.

In Dubai itself, change money only at a bank or an exchange house licensed by the Central Bank of the UAE (CBUAE). Exchange rates move every working day, so treat every figure below as dated.

What rate to compare against

Financial Benchmarks India Ltd (FBIL) computes the rupee reference rates at 1 pm on Mumbai business days, and the RBI’s reference rate archive carries them. FBIL added the dirham from 5 January 2026; before that the set covered only the US dollar, euro, pound and yen. FBIL derives the AED rate by crossing the USD/AED rate with its USD/INR reference rate.

Because the dirham is pegged at AED 3.6725 to the dollar, you can estimate the dirham rate yourself: divide the dollar rate by 3.6725. On 16 September 2026, ₹95.9433 ÷ 3.6725 gives about ₹26.12, the same as the published AED rate. Credsir’s USD to INR rate today page tracks the dollar, so it gives you a quick dirham check too.

No bank or money changer sells at the reference rate. Every provider adds a margin, and the margin is the real cost of the exchange. The forex markup calculator turns any quote into that margin.

How to buy UAE dirhams in India

The RBI allows AD Category I banks, AD Category II entities and full-fledged money changers (FFMCs) to sell foreign exchange for travel. Ask each one whether it has dirham notes in stock for your date.

  1. Get quotes for the same amount from two or three authorised sellers, such as your bank’s forex branch and a licensed money changer.
  2. Note the rate each one quotes, and ask whether any separate fee or tax is added.
  3. Compare each rate with the latest RBI reference rate. A quote of ₹26.60 against ₹26.12 means you pay about 1.8% above the reference.
  4. Keep dirham notes within USD 3,000 per visit. Load the rest on a forex card, or carry an international card.
  5. Give your PAN. The RBI makes it mandatory for all transactions under the Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS) through authorised persons.
  6. Pay in cash only if the total is below ₹50,000. From ₹50,000 upwards, pay the whole amount by cheque, draft, or debit, credit or prepaid card.
  7. Collect a receipt showing the rate, amount and any charges.

Money for a private trip counts against the LRS limit of USD 2,50,000 a financial year. From 1 April 2026, tax collected at source (TCS) on LRS money for purposes other than education and medical treatment is nil up to ₹10 lakh in a financial year and 20% above that. Credsir’s page on LRS limits and TCS explains how to claim TCS back.

Currency exchange in Dubai: what to check

In the UAE, only banks and licensed exchange houses may change money. The CBUAE licenses exchange houses in four categories. Categories I, II and III may carry out currency exchange. Category IV is for remittances through apps and websites only and cannot handle cash.

ItemDetails
Check the licence. The CBUAE website lists licensed financial institutions, and its rulebook requires an exchange house’s trade name to contain the word “Exchange”.
Check the rate both ways. The buying and selling rates differ. Ask how many dirhams you get, or how many rupees you receive, for your exact amount.
Read “no fee” with care.A counter that charges no commission still earns on the rate. Compare the final amount, not the fee.
Pay card bills in dirhams. If a shop or ATM offers to charge your card in rupees, decline and pay in AED. Our guide to dynamic currency conversion shows why that choice costs more.

Rupee notes are a poor thing to rely on. Indian residents may take only ₹25,000 out of India, and whether a Dubai counter will buy rupees, and at what rate, varies by exchange house.

Sending money from Dubai to India

If you live in the UAE and want the best AED to INR outcome, compare the total rupees credited, not the headline rate alone.

  1. Choose a UAE bank, or an exchange house with a licence that covers remittances (Category I, II or IV).
  2. Enter the same AED amount with each provider and note the rupees your recipient will get after all fees.
  3. Divide those rupees by the AED sent. Compare that effective rate with the RBI reference rate or the CBUAE rate for the day. An effective ₹25.80 against ₹26.12 is about 1.2% below the reference.
  4. If you are a non-resident Indian sending your own earnings, credit an NRE account. Credsir’s guide on sending money to India explains NRE and NRO accounts.

The RBI and FBIL do not publish reference rates on Saturdays, Sundays or Mumbai holidays, and the CBUAE rates page shows when it was last updated. Check the date on any reference figure you use.
