Open Know Your UAN on the EPFO Member Portal, verify your mobile by OTP, and enter your Aadhaar, PAN or member ID with your name and date of birth. An old payslip or your payroll team can also tell you.

What UAN is and who issues it
Each time you join an employer covered by EPF, you get a new PF member ID for that job. The UAN sits above those member IDs and stays with you for life. EPFO’s FAQ describes it as a 12-digit number allotted to each subscriber and linked to the member’s active PF account.
Traditionally the employer requested the UAN from EPFO when you joined. Under an EPFO circular dated 30 July 2025, new UANs are generated from 1 August 2025 through Aadhaar-based face authentication on UMANG, as KPMG reported. The employer route remains only for exceptions such as international workers. The Member Portal now shows that Direct UAN Allotment through the portal has been discontinued.
The number matters because EPFO’s online services run on it: passbook, KYC updates, transfers and claims. Our EPF and VPF guide explains the contributions that sit behind it.
Where your UAN is printed
Before you use any online tool, check the papers you already have:
| Item | Details |
|---|---|
| Payslips. | Many payslips show the UAN next to the PF number. |
| Joining documents. | Your Form 11 declaration, joining emails or HR portal may show it. |
| EPFO SMS. | Older messages from EPFO on your registered mobile may carry it. |
| Your employer. | The payroll team can see your UAN against your member ID in the employer login of the unified portal. |
| UAN card. | If you generated the UAN on UMANG, you can download the e-UAN card there or on the Member Portal. |
Know Your UAN online
This works if your mobile number, name and date of birth match EPFO’s records.
- Go to the EPFO Member Portal at unifiedportal-mem.epfindia.gov.in/memberinterface.
- Under Our Services, click Know Your UAN.
- Enter your mobile number and the captcha, then request the OTP.
- Enter the OTP to verify the number.
- Choose to search by Aadhaar, PAN or PF member ID and enter it.
- Enter your name and date of birth exactly as EPFO holds them, then submit.
- Note the UAN shown on screen or sent to your mobile.
Search failures usually come from a mismatch, such as an initial in place of a full name or a wrong birth date. If the details look right and it still fails, ask your employer to check the record.
Finding the number is only the first step. To log in you must activate it, which now happens through face authentication on UMANG. Our UAN activation guide covers that process.
SMS and missed call: what they give you
EPFO’s passbook page lists two balance services. Give a missed call to 9966044425, or send EPFOHO UAN to 7738299899 (you can add a language code, such as ENG). Both work only from the mobile number registered against your UAN, with KYC linked.
These services report your PF details, so they do not replace Know Your UAN if you have no registered mobile. For reading the balance and entries, see our guide to the UAN passbook.
One person, two UANs: what to do
A second UAN often appears when a new employer generates one instead of using your existing number. Your service history then gets split across two numbers.
- Do not generate another UAN. Keep the one your current employer uses as the active UAN.
- Tell your current employer, who can report the duplicate to EPFO.
- Email EPFO at uanepf@epfindia.gov.in, giving both the old and current UAN, and request deactivation of the older one.
- Once the old UAN is dealt with, file a transfer claim so the old PF balance moves to the member ID under your active UAN.
A different problem is a wrong member ID linked to your UAN. EPFO’s user manual (version dated 11 January 2025) lets you fix that yourself:
- Log in to the Member Portal with your UAN, password and captcha, then enter the OTP.
- Go to View > Service History.
- Click Delink next to the wrong member ID and confirm.
- Choose the reason, tick both consent boxes and click Get OTP.
- Enter the OTP sent to your Aadhaar-linked mobile and submit.
If none of this works, raise a grievance on epfigms.gov.in or call 14470.

No. Give your existing UAN to the new employer. They link your new member ID to it.
How do I generate a UAN if I never had one?
From 1 August 2025, new UANs are generated through Aadhaar face authentication on the UMANG app, under UAN Services Through Face Auth. Your employer can also start the process.
Can I find my UAN without a registered mobile number?
Know Your UAN needs a mobile OTP. Without one, ask your employer, who can see the UAN against your member ID, or contact the EPFO helpdesk on 14470.
Can I get my UAN by missed call?
The missed call number 9966044425 works only from a mobile already registered against your UAN. It is meant for balance details, so use Know Your UAN to recover the number itself.
