Your mutual fund KYC status on a KRA website will read KYC Validated, KYC Registered or KYC On Hold. Validated lets you invest with any fund house. Registered lets you keep transacting in funds you already hold, but a new fund house will ask for KYC documents again. On Hold blocks new transactions until you fix the reason, usually an unverified email or mobile, or PAN not linked with Aadhaar.
What each KYC status means
| Status | What it means | What you can do |
|---|---|---|
| KYC Validated | PAN, name and address matched against official databases (Income Tax records, Aadhaar XML, DigiLocker or m-Aadhaar), and PAN-Aadhaar linking verified | Invest with any fund house or intermediary without submitting documents again |
| KYC Registered | Record accepted, but the KRA could not verify your documents with the issuing authority; email or mobile is verified | Continue purchases, SIPs, switches and redemptions in existing investments; a new fund house needs documents again |
| KYC On Hold | Email or mobile not verified, PAN not linked with Aadhaar, or a problem with the KYC documents | New transactions are blocked until the reason is fixed |
| Under Process | The KRA has accepted the record and is still checking it | Wait for the final status |
| KYC Rejected | NDML KRA uses this when the same PAN is already held by another KRA; fund houses also show it for deficient records | Check the reason with the fund house or registrar |
| Not Available | No KYC record exists with any KRA | Complete fresh KYC |
These labels come from SEBI’s KYC risk management framework for KYC Registration Agencies (KRAs). SEBI’s circular of 14 May 2024 narrowed the attributes a KRA must check to PAN, name and address, verified within 2 days of receiving a record. A record becomes “Validated” only if those match official databases and PAN-Aadhaar linkage is also verified.
SEBI’s FAQs add that existing clients as on 31 March 2024 whose attributes cannot be verified may still redeem their existing investments.
Where to check your KYC status
A KYC record sits with one KRA, but you can look it up on any KRA site. Each lookup needs only your PAN:
- Open a KRA enquiry page: CVL KRA (cvlkra.com), NDML KRA (kra.ndml.in), CAMS KRA (camskra.com), KFin KRA (karvykra.com) or NSE KRA (nsekra.com).
- Choose KYC Inquiry and enter your 10-character PAN and the captcha.
- Submit. The page shows your status and, on many sites, the KRA that holds the record.
The KFintech and CAMS investor sites also have a KYC status check. According to CVL KRA, the fund house or registrar website shows the specific reason for an On Hold or Rejected status.
Fixing KYC On Hold
Match the fix to the reason shown:
| Item | Details |
|---|---|
| Email or mobile not validated. | KRAs send a validation link by email and SMS. Complete it on the KRA’s site, such as CVL’s KRA verification page. If the email or mobile on record is wrong, submit a KYC modification with a fund house, registrar, broker or depository participant. The change is uploaded to the KRA. |
| PAN not linked with Aadhaar. | Link them on the Income Tax e-Filing portal. The portal charges a ₹1,000 fee for delayed linking. SEBI’s FAQ says you should then tell your intermediary; you can also update this on the KRA portal. NRIs, non-citizens, people aged 80 or more and residents of Assam, Jammu and Kashmir and Meghalaya are exempt from linking. |
| Document deficiency. | Redo KYC with a valid document. CAMS recommends online KYC with Aadhaar as the document, which can take you straight to Validated. |
The KFintech modification process takes a few minutes online. Once the KRA updates the record, the status changes. Zerodha’s support page notes the update can take up to 72 hours to show.
On the stock-market side, NSE has been blocking trading for PANs whose KYC uploaded in a given month stays On Hold. Its circular of 14 July 2026 covered records uploaded in June 2026, with the block effective from 25 July 2026. That rule applies to trading accounts; for mutual funds, the fund house applies the restrictions above.
Documents for fresh KYC
You need your PAN plus one officially valid document (OVD) as proof of identity and address. SEBI’s list of OVDs is:
- Passport
- Driving licence
- Proof of possession of Aadhaar number
- Voter ID card
- NREGA job card signed by a state government officer
- Letter from the National Population Register with name and address
PAN is compulsory but does not count as proof of identity. If your OVD does not carry your current address, a utility bill no more than two months old or a property tax receipt can serve for now. You must then submit an updated OVD within three months.
For online KYC, you e-sign the form, and the process captures a live photo and your location in India. SEBI says the mobile number should preferably be the one seeded with Aadhaar. A minor’s KYC uses the minor’s birth certificate, passport, school certificate or PAN, plus the guardian’s KYC. NRIs need a passport, PIO card or OCI card and overseas address proof.
A record completed with a non-Aadhaar document usually ends up as Registered. You will then have to submit documents again each time you approach a new fund house. Our step-by-step guide on how to invest in mutual funds covers opening a folio once your KYC is done.
Updating details after KYC
SEBI requires you to update your KYC whenever a detail changes. For a name change, file the modification form with a self-attested copy of proof of the new name. If your current address differs from the one on your Aadhaar, you can give a self-declaration to the intermediary.
- Go to the KYC modification page of any fund house or registrar. CAMS allows modification when your status is Registered, On Hold or Validated.
- Enter your PAN and choose the details to change.
- Authenticate with Aadhaar through DigiLocker or an OTP, or upload the supporting document.
- E-sign and submit. The intermediary uploads the change to your KRA.
Each KRA emails or texts you whenever an intermediary downloads or modifies your record. Complaints about KYC can be filed on SCORES, where SEBI’s FAQ sets a 21-day redress timeline. If a CAS or fund statement shows wrong details after the change, see our guide to the consolidated account statement.
Frequently asked questions
What does KYC Registered mean in a mutual fund?
Your record is accepted, but the KRA could not verify your document with its issuer. You can keep transacting in your existing funds, but a new fund house will ask for KYC documents.
Can I invest if my KYC is on hold?
Not in new transactions. Fix the reason shown, such as an unverified email or mobile or PAN-Aadhaar linking, and wait for the status to change.
Can I redeem my mutual fund if KYC is on hold?
SEBI’s FAQ says clients existing on 31 March 2024 whose attributes cannot be verified may still exit their existing investments, subject to the intermediary’s checks.
How do I change KYC Registered to KYC Validated?
Redo or modify your KYC online using Aadhaar through XML, DigiLocker or m-Aadhaar, with PAN linked to Aadhaar.
Is PAN-Aadhaar linking mandatory for mutual fund KYC?
Not to transact with your existing intermediary, per SEBI’s FAQ. Without verified linking, though, your KYC is not portable to new intermediaries.
How long does it take for KYC status to update?
KRAs verify new records within 2 days. After a validation or modification, allow up to 72 hours for the new status to show.
Do I need separate KYC for mutual funds and a demat account?
No, if your record is Validated. The new intermediary fetches it from the KRA.
