What a Farmer ID is
AgriStack is the government’s digital public infrastructure for farming. It has three registries: the Farmer Registry, geo-referenced village maps and the Crop Sown Registry. States create and maintain all three.
The Farmer ID is created by matching your details with your digitised land records. The Farmer Registry covers landholding farmers, and the application can also onboard tenants and sharecroppers. According to AgriStack’s clarifications document, a farmer with land in more than one state still gets a single Farmer ID against Aadhaar.
Do not confuse it with a Farm ID. A Farm ID identifies a plot of land and starts with a two-letter state code. The Farmer ID identifies you.
Karnataka uses its own FRUITS system (Farmer Registration and Unified beneficiary InformaTion System), and the state handles PM-Kisan registration through the FRUITS-PMKISAN portal. If you farm in Karnataka, check your FRUITS registration first; contact details are on that portal.
Why PM-Kisan needs it
The Agriculture Ministry told the Lok Sabha in March 2026 that the Farmer ID is mandatory only for new PM-Kisan registrations in 19 states. In states where registry work has not started, farmers can register without one. In August 2025 the requirement covered 14 states.
As of 19 March 2026, the ministry listed Farmer IDs in these 19 states: Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Odisha, Punjab, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Tripura, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand. Uttar Pradesh had the most, at 1.99 crore.
Beyond PM-Kisan, the ID is used for crop insurance under PMFBY, MSP procurement, farm credit and disaster relief. Maharashtra used it to send over ₹14,000 crore to 89 lakh farmers for Kharif 2025 crop losses in five days. Documents required
- Aadhaar card
- Mobile number linked to Aadhaar, for the OTP and e-sign
- Land record details: district, sub-district, village and survey or khasra number (khatauni or RoR)
- Bank account details, for benefit transfers
Your name in Aadhaar and in the land record must match closely. If the land still stands in a dead parent’s name, get the mutation done first. You can check your land record on your state’s Bhulekh portal.
How to register
State portals follow the address pattern [state code]fr.agristack.gov.in, for example upfr.agristack.gov.in for Uttar Pradesh and mhfr.agristack.gov.in for Maharashtra. Screens vary by state, but the self-registration flow generally runs like this:
- Open your state Farmer Registry portal and select Farmer under Login as.
- Click Create New User Account.
- Enter your Aadhaar number, accept the declaration and verify with the OTP sent to your Aadhaar-linked mobile.
- Check the details fetched from Aadhaar and fill in the rest of your profile.
- Enter your land details: district, sub-district, village and survey number. The system fetches the record from the state land database.
- Select your name from the owners listed and verify ownership.
- E-sign with an Aadhaar OTP to give consent and submit.
- Note the Enrolment ID sent to your mobile and download the confirmation.
Without a smartphone, go to a CSC or to the block or tehsil office. States also hold camps. For self-registration help, UP’s portal offers a user manual, and Maharashtra’s helpdesk is 020 25712712.
Checking Farmer ID status
The Enrolment ID is a draft number, not your Farmer ID. A revenue official checks your land claim, and the Farmer ID is issued only once the claim is approved. AgriStack’s FAQ puts creation at 24 hours after approval in camp mode.
- Open your state Farmer Registry portal.
- Click Check Enrollment Status.
- Enter your Enrolment ID or Aadhaar and view the result.
AgriStack’s FAQ lists the usual reasons a land claim is rejected:
- Your Aadhaar name and land-record name do not match closely enough.
- The land is not in your name in the records.
- The owner has died and mutation has not been done.
- The record still shows the seller, not you as the buyer.
Fix the record with your revenue office, then raise a grievance through the portal. On PM-Kisan, an applicant without a Farmer ID in a mandatory state sees a notice that the ID is not generated, with a link to the creation process. After registering, track your PM-Kisan payments on our beneficiary status guide.
