Stock Market Holidays 2026: NSE and BSE Trading Holiday List

NSE and BSE have 16 weekday trading holidays in 2026. Five are still ahead: 2 October, 20 October, 10 November, 24 November and 25 December. Diwali falls on Sunday 8 November, when a special Muhurat trading session will be held. On a trading holiday the equity and equity derivatives segments of both exchanges stay shut all day.

2026 stock market holiday list (NSE and BSE)

These are the days when you cannot buy or sell shares, futures or options on either exchange. Dates up to 14 September have already passed.

Holidays on 2 October and 25 December fall on Fridays, so each gives a three-day market break. The exchanges say they may change a holiday by issuing a separate circular in advance. That happened this year: 15 January was first treated as a settlement holiday only and was later made a full trading holiday for the Maharashtra civic polls.

Holidays that fall on a weekend

Markets are closed on Saturdays and Sundays anyway, so these four holidays cost no trading day:

• 15 February 2026 (Sunday): Mahashivratri
• 21 March 2026 (Saturday): Id-Ul-Fitr (Ramadan Eid)
• 15 August 2026 (Saturday): Independence Day
• 8 November 2026 (Sunday): Diwali Laxmi Pujan

Diwali is the exception to “closed means closed”. NSE and BSE will hold Muhurat trading on Sunday, 8 November. Both exchanges say the timings will be notified later, and no timing circular had been issued as of 16 September 2026.

Which segments close on a holiday

MCX publishes its own list. ICICI Direct’s summary of it shows the same split: on 14 September, 20 October and 10 November the morning session is closed and the evening session runs from 5:00 pm. If you trade commodities, check your exchange’s list for the exact session.

Settlement holidays and trading holidays

A trading holiday means no trades. A settlement holiday means the market trades, but the clearing corporation does not move money or shares that day. Pay-ins and pay-outs are pushed to the next working day.

NSE Clearing’s 2026 list has four settlement-only days on top of the trading holidays:

1. 19 February 2026 (Thursday): Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti
2. 19 March 2026 (Thursday): Gudhi Padwa
3. 1 April 2026 (Wednesday): Annual bank closing
4. 26 August 2026 (Wednesday): Id-E-Milad

On these days you could buy and sell shares normally, but settlement waited. For example, NSE Clearing ran trades of 18 and 19 February through multiple settlements on 20 February. If you sell shares the day before a settlement holiday, the money reaches your broker a day later than usual.

How to check if the share market is open today

1. Check the day. NSE and BSE do not trade on Saturdays or Sundays, except for special sessions such as Muhurat trading.
2. Match today’s date against the table above.
3. Open the Market Timings & Holidays page on nseindia.com, or the Trading Holidays page on bseindia.com, for any last-minute change.
4. Search the exchange’s circulars for “trading holiday” if an election or other event has been announced near the date.
5. Look at your broker’s app. Most show a notice on the login screen when the market is shut.

On a normal day, NSE’s equity pre-open session runs from 9:00 am, regular trading from 9:15 am to 3:30 pm, and a closing session from 3:40 pm to 4:00 pm.
