Best Maternity Insurance

Maternity cover carries a waiting period of two years or more, and a sub-limit that is often smaller than the hospital bill. Buy it before you plan, or use the employer policy.

The best maternity insurance is the one you bought two years ago. That sounds glib. It is the whole product. Maternity is a planned cost. Insurers price it as one. Every retail policy makes you wait. The wait is measured in years.

Are you already pregnant? Then no retail policy in India will cover this delivery. Pregnancy is a pre-existing condition once you apply. That leaves two options. Use an employer group policy, or pay the bill yourself. We would rather say so plainly.

Why we rank routes, not brands, on this page

We do not hold audited, dated data on every maternity plan sold in India. So we will not publish a leaderboard. We can rank the routes to cover. That is the real decision in front of you.

Rank Route Waiting period The catch
1 Employer group health policy with maternity Usually none, because the group is underwritten as a whole It ends when the job ends. Check the cap and whether your spouse is covered.
2 Retail policy with a maternity benefit, bought early Two years or more, set in the policy wording The sub-limit is often far below the real bill.
3 Maternity as an optional add-on to an existing plan A fresh wait applies from the date you add it Adding it later restarts the clock. Sum insured increases can restart it too.
4 Save the money in a dedicated fund None No cover for complications, which is the real risk. Pair it with a good base health policy.
5 Buying after conception Not available The claim will be declined. Do not do this.

The honest verdict runs in three lines. If your employer covers maternity, use it. Do not buy a second plan for this. If it does not, and a baby is two years away, buy now. If a baby is six months away, save the money instead.

How long is the maternity waiting period?

It is set in the policy wording, not by rule. Two years is common. Some plans go longer. Some go shorter for a higher premium.

Here is a verified example. The New India Assurance Yuva Bharat Health Policy is clear. Maternity expenses “shall be covered after twenty-four months of Continuous Coverage under this Plan”. A second claim starts a fresh 24-month wait. Cover stops at two claims.

Read the wording for your own plan before you buy. The brochure number and the wording do not always agree. Our page on waiting periods covers how these clauses work.

Why is the maternity sum insured so small?

This is the part buyers miss. The waiting period gets the attention. The sub-limit does the damage.

Take the same New India policy. Its cap is “up to Rs. 25,000/- in case of single baby and up to Rs. 37,500/- in case of Twin Babies”. Higher limits of ₹50,000, ₹75,000 and ₹1,00,000 are sold as an add-on. They cost extra. They also need 24 months of cover.

Now compare that with a delivery at a private hospital in a metro. In many cities the base package alone is larger. So a policy can pay in full and still leave you most of the bill. That is not a mis-sale. It is the product working as written.

Ask one question before you buy. What is the maternity limit, in rupees? If the answer is vague, the answer is small. Our page on room rent and sub-limits shows how such caps bite elsewhere.

What conditions do insurers attach to maternity cover?

The conditions matter as much as the headline. Digit Health Care Plus sells maternity as an optional section. Its wording shows the standard shape.

ItemDetails
Spouse must be covered. The wording needs the “Female Insured Person’s legally married spouse” on the same policy. The insurer may waive it. Single parents are exempt.
Two living children. The benefit is “limited to cover up to two living children”. Lawful terminations are not capped.
Raising the cover restarts the clock. If you increase the sum insured at renewal, “there is a fresh waiting period” on the increased part only.
Pre-natal and post-natal costs are out. They are “not covered unless leading to Your Hospitalization”. Scans, tests and consultations over nine months are yours to pay.
Complications are in.Complications of pregnancy or childbirth are paid within the maternity limit, not on top of it.

Does maternity insurance cover the newborn?

Usually only if the maternity claim is admitted. In the Digit wording, newborn cover sits inside the maternity sum insured. It pays only where a maternity claim was accepted. It runs 90 days from delivery. It covers complications and the vaccines in the National Immunization Schedule.

Two deadlines follow. The baby must be added as an insured person by endorsement. If the policy expires inside those 90 days, the baby is covered only on renewal, with the baby named. Diarise both. A newborn intensive care stay is the biggest bill here. It is also the one people least expect.

What protects you once the policy is running?

Two rules matter. Both come from the IRDAI Master Circular on Health Insurance Business, dated 29 May 2024.

First, the moratorium. After 60 months of continuous cover, the insurer can no longer contest your policy or your claim. The circular allows only one exception, which is established fraud. Credits from ported and migrated policies count towards those 60 months.

Second, cashless timelines. The insurer must decide a cashless request “immediately but not more than one hour of receipt of request”. It must grant final approval “within three hours” of the discharge request. Run over, and the extra hospital charge falls on the insurer. Keep the timestamps.

Portability protects the wait you have already served. On a switch you carry across your waiting periods, your moratorium and your no claim bonus. So a two-year maternity wait is not lost when you change insurer. Get the credit confirmed in writing first.

What we could not verify

We could not get a dated, insurer-by-insurer table of waiting periods, premiums and caps from primary sources. Those numbers move with the plan variant and the sum insured. So we quoted two policy wordings instead. Use them to find the same clauses in yours. Check claim performance on our page on health insurance claim ratios.

Frequently asked questions

Can I buy maternity insurance while pregnant?

No. Retail insurers treat an existing pregnancy as a pre-existing condition. Maternity cover carries a two-year wait anyway. A policy bought now will not pay for this delivery. An employer group policy is the only common route that does.

Which is better, an employer policy or a retail maternity plan?

The employer policy, while you have it. Group cover usually has no maternity wait and a higher limit. Its weakness is simple. It ends with the job. Hold a personal health policy alongside it too.

Does maternity cover include a caesarean section?

Yes, where maternity is covered at all. Wordings define maternity expenses to include complicated deliveries and caesarean sections. The rupee cap is the same one used for a normal delivery. A caesarean simply eats through it faster.

Are IVF and fertility treatments covered?

Rarely, and never by default. Some plans sell fertility treatment as a separate benefit with its own lifetime cap. It is not part of maternity cover. If it matters to you, ask for the clause and the cap in writing.

Is maternity insurance worth the extra premium?

Only if you buy at least two years ahead. Then do one sum. Compare the extra premium over those years with the cap you would get back. If the two are close, you are pre-paying your own bill. The insurer’s margin sits on top. The maths improves where newborn complications are properly covered. That is the cost you cannot predict.
