Several lenders price electric vehicles below comparable petrol models under green-loan programmes, and the concession is worth asking for by name because it is not always offered — check the quote you are given against current car loan interest rates and our ranking of the best car loans. The two things to check are whether the battery is covered by the manufacturer warranty for the loan tenure, and how the lender values the vehicle for insurance.

What to know

The financial risk specific to EVs is the battery. It is the most expensive component, and its warranty term relative to your loan tenure decides who carries the replacement risk. A seven-year loan against an eight-year battery warranty is comfortable; a seven-year loan against a five-year warranty is a decision you should make consciously.

Resale values in the Indian EV market are still thin and moving, which affects the insured declared value and what you would recover on an early sale. That is not an argument against buying one — it is an argument against a long tenure on one. Our EMI calculator shows what shortening the tenure costs each month, and the IDV calculator shows how the insured declared value falls as the vehicle ages.

Frequently asked questions

Are EV loans cheaper than petrol car loans?

Often marginally, where a lender runs a green-loan programme — typically 25 to 50 basis points. It is worth asking for by name, because it is not always volunteered at the point of sale.

Does the loan cover the battery?

The loan funds the vehicle including its battery. What matters is the manufacturer’s battery warranty term against your loan tenure — if the warranty expires first, a replacement falls on you while you are still repaying.

Is EV insurance more expensive?

Premiums reflect the higher repair and replacement cost of the battery pack, and some insurers require specific add-ons for battery and charger cover. Check what is included rather than assuming standard motor cover applies; our comparison of the best car insurance policies covers which insurers offer battery and charger add-ons.

Best Education Loans

Public sector banks are materially cheaper than NBFCs on education loans, and for study in India they should be the first call — but they are slower and stricter on collateral, which is why families under an admission deadline end up at an NBFC paying several points more.
