It is the correct starting point for study in India, and it is under-used mainly because families do not know it exists.

What to know

The portal is a routing mechanism, not a lender. You submit a common application form and it reaches the banks you select; each then underwrites on its own criteria, and you can be approved by one and declined by another. Track the applications individually rather than assuming a single decision.

Scheme parameters — interest subvention terms, eligible income limits, participating institutions — are set by notification and revised over time. We deliberately do not restate current thresholds here, because a stale number on a page like this is worse than no number. The official portal carries the current position.

Questions

What is the Vidya Lakshmi portal?

A central government portal that lets a student submit one common education loan application form to multiple participating banks, and track the applications. It is free, and no agent or intermediary is involved.

Is there a fee to apply through Vidya Lakshmi?

No. Anyone charging a fee to submit or fast-track a Vidya Lakshmi application is not connected to the scheme.

Does applying through the portal guarantee a loan?

No. The portal routes the application; each bank underwrites independently on its own criteria for course, institution, collateral and co-applicant income.
