Income Tax Refund Status

Refunds usually take four to five weeks after e-verification. What each status word means, why refunds fail, and how to unstick one.

The Income Tax Department says a refund usually takes four to five weeks to reach your bank. The clock starts only once you e-verify the return. So if you have not e-verified, nothing is stuck. Nothing has begun. Check the status yourself on the e-filing portal. Go to e-File, then Income Tax Returns, then View Filed Returns. The word you see there tells you which of four cases you are in. Each has a different fix.

What does my refund status mean?

Status What it means What to do
Refund Issued The refund has been processed and sent to your bank account Check the account and the IFSC on the intimation if it has not arrived
Partially Adjusted Part of the refund was set off against a tax liability Read the intimation to see which demand it was set against
Fully Adjusted The entire refund was absorbed by outstanding tax Verify the old demand is genuine before accepting it
Failed The refund could not be credited to your account Fix the cause below, then request a re-issue

Source: the refund status user manual on incometax.gov.in. The two adjustment lines surprise people most. The department can set your refund against tax it says you still owe from an earlier year. It does that without asking first.

Why did my refund fail?

Almost always for one of five reasons, all of them administrative. The department’s manual lists them plainly.

  • Your PAN is inoperative because it is not linked with Aadhaar
  • The bank account has not been pre-validated on the portal
  • The name on the bank account does not match the PAN
  • The IFSC code is wrong
  • The account has been closed

Fix the cause first. Then ask for a refund re-issue. A re-issue into the same broken account just fails again. The usual cause is an account you validated once. Then it closed, or the bank changed its IFSC in a merger.

Pre-validation is not optional. Add the account on the portal. Validate it, then nominate it for refund. Do this before you file. It takes its own time to confirm.

How long should a refund actually take?

Four to five weeks from e-verification, per the department’s own manual. That is the usual case, not a guarantee.

Two things stretch it. A return picked for closer checking takes longer. So does one where your tax credit does not match the department’s records. Check Form 26AS and the annual information statement before you file. A gap between the TDS you claim and the TDS your deductor reported is the commonest reason a refund sits.

The Income-tax Act pays interest on a delayed refund under Section 244A. We are not printing a rate here. We could not open the section text on the department’s site while writing this page. Read Section 244A on incometaxindia.gov.in for the rate and the period. Then check whether interest was actually paid to you.

What do you do when the refund is genuinely stuck?

Work through it in order, and keep records at each step.

First, confirm the return is e-verified. Second, read the intimation issued after processing. It sets out what the department worked out against what you claimed. If the two differ, the refund is not stuck. It has been cut, and the intimation says why.

Third, look on the portal for an old demand from a past year. A “Fully Adjusted” status usually points to one. Old demands are sometimes wrong. You can reply to them online instead of accepting them.

Fourth, if none of that applies, raise a grievance on the e-filing portal. The department also runs an e-filing helpline. The numbers are 1800 103 0025 and 1800 419 0025, from 08:00 to 20:00, Monday to Friday. Keep your PAN, acknowledgement number and assessment year ready.

How do you avoid this next year?

Most refund problems are created before filing, not after. Three habits remove nearly all of them.

Keep your PAN linked to Aadhaar. An inoperative PAN blocks the credit outright. Keep one validated bank account you do not plan to close. Check each year that it is still nominated. And match Form 26AS and the annual information statement against your own records before you file. Do not trust the pre-filled figures.

The larger point is that a big refund is not good news. It means you lent the government money for a year at your own expense. If you get a big refund every year, fix your TDS declaration or your advance tax. Our income tax calculator and advance tax calculator show what you should be paying. The old versus new regime calculator checks you are on the right side of that choice.

Frequently asked questions

How can I check my income tax refund status?

Log in to the e-filing portal. Go to e-File, then Income Tax Returns, then View Filed Returns. Select the assessment year. Click View Details for the full life cycle of the return, refund stage included. The status only means anything after you e-verify.

Why is my refund showing as adjusted against a demand I do not recognise?

The department can set your refund against tax it records as due from an earlier year. That produces the Partially Adjusted or Fully Adjusted status. Old demands can be wrong. A payment may have been made but tagged to the wrong year. Check the demand on the portal and reply to it.

My PAN is inoperative. Will I still get my refund?

No. The department lists an inoperative PAN as a reason refunds fail. A PAN goes inoperative when it is not linked with Aadhaar. Link the two. Wait for the PAN to show as operative. Then ask for a refund re-issue. Nothing else releases the money.

Can I change the bank account for a refund after filing?

Yes. Add the new account on the portal and validate it. Nominate it for refund. Then submit a re-issue request. Do not close the old account until the new one is confirmed. A closed account is itself a listed failure reason.

Do I get interest if the refund is late?

Section 244A of the Income-tax Act provides interest on refunds. The rate and the period sit in that section. Interest is not payable in every case. Compare the amount credited with the refund in your intimation. If it is higher, interest has been added.
