RBI Approved Loan Apps: How to Check an Instant Loan App in India

RBI regulates lenders, not apps. Check an instant loan app in RBI's DLA directory and confirm its lender is a registered bank or NBFC.

RBI does not approve loan apps. It regulates the bank or NBFC behind an app, and since 1 July 2025 it publishes a directory of digital lending apps (DLAs) that regulated lenders have reported to it. To check an instant loan app in India, find it in that directory and confirm the lender it names is a registered bank or NBFC.

RBI builds the directory from what lenders report and does not check each entry, so a listing proves a link to a regulated lender, not a good deal. A legitimate app names its lending partner up front; an illegal one asks for contact and gallery permissions it has no business needing. If you are not in a hurry, a bank or NBFC from our personal loan interest rate table will usually be cheaper.

What to know

The four signals of an illegal loan app are consistent: no named RBI-regulated lending partner; permission requests for your contacts, photo gallery or location; a processing fee demanded before disbursal; and a tenure of days rather than months. Any one of them is enough to stop, whatever your credit score is and however unlikely a regulated lender looks. Harassment of a borrower’s contact list is the business model of these operations, and it begins with the permission you granted at install.

Regulated instant lending is legitimate and useful. Under RBI’s digital lending rules (issued on 8 May 2025 and folded into its Credit Facilities Directions of 28 November 2025), the lender must pay the loan straight into your bank account, and you repay straight to the lender’s account, never through an app’s pool account. Before you sign, you must get a key fact statement showing the all-inclusive APR. You also get a cooling-off period of at least one day, during which you can exit by repaying the principal and proportionate APR with no penalty. Any fee owed to the app company is the lender’s to pay, not yours. Put that APR into the EMI calculator next to a quote from one of the best personal loans before you accept it. If any of those is missing, you are not dealing with a regulated product.

The same rules bar lending apps from reading your files, media, contact list or call logs. An app may use your camera, microphone or location only once, for KYC, with your consent. Apps that link you to several lenders must show every offer side by side, with the lender’s name, amount, tenure, APR, monthly repayment and penal charges.

Frequently asked questions

Which loan apps are RBI approved in India?

None, strictly: RBI approves lenders, not apps. What RBI publishes is a directory of apps that banks and NBFCs have reported as their own or their partners’. RBI lists them as reported, without its own checks, so use the directory to confirm the link and then compare the APR yourself.

Where can I find the RBI list of registered loan apps?

On rbi.org.in, go to Citizen’s Corner and open “DLAs deployed by Regulated Entities”. The directory has been live since 1 July 2025. A “registered loan app list 2023” from any other site is out of date. For the lender itself, use the RBI list of registered NBFCs.

How do I know if a loan app is legal in India?

The app must appear in RBI’s DLA directory and name the RBI-regulated entity making the loan, a bank or a registered NBFC. You can check that name against the RBI’s list of registered NBFCs. Money must move directly between your bank account and the lender’s. You must receive a key fact statement showing the all-inclusive APR.

What should I do if a loan app is harassing me?

Call the national cybercrime helpline on 1930 or report at cybercrime.gov.in, and report the app on RBI’s Sachet portal. Keep screenshots of every message and call. Do not pay a settlement to stop harassment before you verify what you owe. Demanding an inflated amount is the usual pattern. Our guide to illegal loan apps covers the complaint steps.

Are instant loan apps more expensive than banks?

Often, once the processing fee is counted in the APR. The table above shows app lenders’ starting rates next to those of large NBFCs. Compare the APR on the key fact statement with a bank quote, or with the cost of carrying a credit card balance, before you choose.

Can I get an RBI-regulated loan app loan without a CIBIL score?

Possibly. In August 2025 the Finance Ministry told Parliament that RBI has not set a minimum credit score, and that first-time borrowers should not be refused only for having no credit history. Lenders still run their own checks, so a new-to-credit applicant may get a smaller amount or a higher rate.
