How the AUD to INR rate is worked out

FBIL, India’s benchmark administrator, sets reference rates for only a handful of currencies, and the Australian dollar is not among them. Two dated benchmarks give a fair picture instead:

  • ECB cross rate. Divide the ECB’s rupee rate per euro by its Australian dollar rate per euro. On 16 September 2026: ₹110.714 ÷ A$1.6176 = ₹68.44.
  • US dollar route. Multiply the RBI/FBIL dollar rate by the US dollar value of one Australian dollar. On 16 September 2026, A$1 was worth about US$0.7132 on ECB rates, so ₹95.9433 × 0.7132 = about ₹68.43.

The two methods land within about a paisa of each other. Either one tells you whether a quote from a bank or remittance service is fair.

How to get a fair AUD to INR rate

  1. Check the cross rate or a mid-market rate on the day you plan to convert.
  2. Get quotes from two or three providers: your bank, a remittance service and, for cash, an RBI-authorised money changer.
  3. Compare the rupees that will reach the Indian account after all fees, not the headline rate.
  4. When paying by card in Australia, choose to pay in Australian dollars. Paying in rupees at the terminal triggers dynamic currency conversion, which usually costs more.
  5. Deal only with banks and money changers authorised by the RBI under the Foreign Exchange Management Act, 1999.

What moves the Australian dollar against the rupee

ItemDetails
The US dollar. The rupee trades mainly against the dollar, so AUD/INR follows how both currencies move against it.
Australian interest rates.Decisions by the Reserve Bank of Australia on its cash rate change the return on holding Australian dollars.
Indian factors.Oil prices, foreign investment flows and RBI policy move the rupee. The RBI repo rate is 5.25%, with the next decision due after the 5–7 October 2026 meeting.
