You can change the address on your Aadhaar online, through the myAadhaar portal or the Aadhaar app, for ₹75. If you have a proof of address in your own name, upload it. If you don’t, use the head of family (HoF) route: a relative who lives with you approves the request, and your Aadhaar takes the address from theirs.

Both routes need a mobile number registered with Aadhaar. Without one, visit an Aadhaar centre, where you can also update the address with a document.

UIDAI’s online FAQ still mentions ₹50 for an online address update. Its current charges list shows ₹75, and the Aadhaar app FAQ also asks for ₹75, so plan for ₹75.

Methods to update your address

Method Use it when What you need
Own proof of address, online You have a valid address document in your name Registered mobile, clear colour scan of the document
Head of family, online You live with a relative but have no address proof in your name Relative’s Aadhaar number and their approval; proof of relationship on the portal
Aadhaar centre No registered mobile, or you want to combine it with another update Original address document

This page covers changing the address itself. If your address is right and you only need to refresh the documents behind your Aadhaar, the free document update is the service to use.

Valid address proof documents

UIDAI’s list of supporting documents includes these proofs of address:

  • Indian passport, voter ID or ration card
  • Electricity, water or gas bill, or a landline, post-paid mobile or broadband bill, not older than 3 months
  • Property tax receipt, not older than 1 year
  • Registered sale agreement or gift deed, or a registered or unregistered rent, lease or leave-and-licence agreement
  • Accommodation allotment letter from a government body, PSU or regulator, not older than 1 year
  • Life or medical insurance policy, valid up to 1 year from issue
  • Certificate of address on UIDAI’s standard format from an authorised official, such as a village panchayat head for rural areas

UIDAI rejects online requests when:

  1. the document is not on the valid list;
  2. it is not in the name of the Aadhaar holder asking for the change;
  3. the address typed in does not match the address on the document; or
  4. the scan is unclear or not a colour scan of the original.

For a passport or a rent or property agreement, the portal asks for images of several pages.

Online address update steps

On the myAadhaar portal

  1. Go to myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in and log in with your Aadhaar number and the OTP sent to your registered mobile.
  2. Choose the address update service.
  3. Enter the new address in English. The portal transliterates it into your regional language; correct any errors.
  4. Select the document type and upload a scan in PDF or JPEG.
  5. Pay the fee online.
  6. Download the acknowledgement (invoice) with your Service Request Number (SRN), which also arrives by SMS.

Online address update supports Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Odia, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu as the regional language.

On the Aadhaar app

  1. Open the Aadhaar app and log in with your 6-digit PIN.
  2. Go to Services, then Address Update. If the app is registered on a different mobile number from your Aadhaar, verify with OTP first.
  3. Upload your document as JPG, PNG or PDF.
  4. Enter the new address and check the preview in English and your local language.
  5. Complete Face Authentication and pay ₹75.
  6. Download the acknowledgement slip with the SRN.

Head-of-family based update

UIDAI started this route in January 2023 for children, spouses, parents and other relatives who live with a family member but have no address document of their own. Any resident above the age of 18 can act as HoF and share their address. Your Aadhaar will then carry the address recorded in the HoF’s Aadhaar, so make sure theirs is current first.

Proof of relationship

On myAadhaar, you upload a document that names both you and the HoF and shows the relationship, such as a ration card, marksheet, marriage certificate or passport. If you have none, UIDAI accepts a self-declaration by the HoF in its prescribed format.

Steps

  1. On myAadhaar, choose the address update option based on a family member’s Aadhaar (in the app: Services, Address Update).
  2. Enter the HoF’s Aadhaar number. Only the number is validated; none of their details are shown to you.
  3. Select your relationship and upload the proof of relationship (on the app, complete Face Authentication).
  4. Pay the fee and note the SRN. The HoF gets an SMS about the request.
  5. The HoF approves it within 30 days: on myAadhaar by logging in, or in the app under Services, Family Member Request, entering the SRN and tapping Approve.

If the HoF rejects the request or does nothing for 30 days, it is closed and you get an SMS. The fee is not refunded in either case, so agree with the relative before you pay.

Yes, through the head of family route. An adult relative (above 18) who lives at the same address approves your request, and your Aadhaar takes their address.

Which documents are valid for Aadhaar address update?

Common ones are a passport, voter ID, ration card, a utility bill up to 3 months old, a property tax receipt up to 1 year old, or a rent agreement, all in your own name.

How do I check my Aadhaar address update status?

Use Check Aadhaar Update Status on myAadhaar with your SRN, or Track my request in the Aadhaar app.

How long does an Aadhaar address update take?

Up to 30 days, according to UIDAI’s Aadhaar app FAQ.

What if the head of family does not approve my request?

The request closes after 30 days and the fee is not refunded. You would need to apply again.

Can I update my address online without a registered mobile number?

No. Online services need a registered mobile, so visit an Aadhaar centre instead.
