“Banglar Awas Yojana” now covers two separate schemes in West Bengal. The state-funded Banglar Bari (Gramin) scheme, renamed Paschim Banga Awas in August 2026, pays ₹1.20 lakh in two ₹60,000 instalments. The central PMAY-G is being restarted in the state after the Awaas+ 2024 survey. Neither takes online applications: households are picked from surveyed and verified lists.

How Banglar Awas relates to PMAY-G

West Bengal ran the central rural housing scheme, PMAY-G, under a state name, Banglar (or Bangla) Awaas Yojana (BAY). In 2022, the Centre stopped releasing PMAY-G funds to the state. A 2023 Ministry of Rural Development letter, quoted by The Indian Express, listed the reasons: renaming the scheme, houses sanctioned to ineligible households, deletion of eligible names, and irregularities reported in the media. AwaasSoft shows 201 West Bengal sanctions in 2023-24 and none in the three years since.

The state then started its own fully funded scheme, Banglar Bari, in December 2024. About 12 lakh families got ₹1.20 lakh in two instalments in the first phase. A second phase for about 16 lakh families followed, with a new standard operating procedure issued on 15 September 2025.

After the BJP government took office on 9 May 2026, two things changed:

  • Rename. The state scheme was renamed Paschim Banga Awas. On 6 August 2026 the Chief Minister released the second instalment to over 10.20 lakh families, according to PTI and other reports.
  • PMAY-G restart. The Ministry of Rural Development let West Bengal finish the Awaas+ 2024 survey in every gram panchayat. Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan announced approval for 1 lakh PMAY-G houses for the state on 14 July 2026.

Urban households fall under PMAY-Urban 2.0, which is outside this page.

Eligibility and survey

The 2025 SOP for Banglar Bari Phase II, as reported by The Indian Express, set these conditions. A family must not own a pucca house and must not fall in any of these groups:

  • owns a motorised vehicle or mechanised farm equipment;
  • has a member in government service;
  • runs a non-farm enterprise registered with the government;
  • has a member earning more than ₹15,000 a month, or pays income tax or professional tax;
  • owns 2.5 acres or more of irrigated land, or 5 acres or more of unirrigated land;
  • has already benefited from any housing scheme.

The family also had to be on the waiting list prepared after field verification in 2024-25. These filters match the PMAY-G exclusion rules for 2024-29, which our PMAY-G waiting list explainer sets out in full.

For PMAY-G, new names come from the Awaas+ 2024 survey. The Ministry gave West Bengal time until 20 July 2026, then 15 August, then 31 August 2026, and said it would not extend the date again. See our Awaas Plus 2024 survey guide for how that survey works.

Beneficiary list and verification

District administrations publish the state scheme’s lists on their own websites, block by block. Howrah and Uttar Dinajpur, for example, post three lists for each block: Eligible, In-Eligible and Inactive. Cooch Behar published provisional Phase II lists for 12 blocks on 3 November 2025.

Under the 2025 SOP, officers from the block, sub-division and district checked each household in person. They used a mobile app, recorded the visit on video, re-checked Aadhaar, bank and mobile details, and uploaded geo-tagged photos of the old house and the proposed site.

The new government ran a further check before paying the second instalment. According to PTI, about 18 lakh families were identified under the earlier government. About 10 lakh qualified for the second instalment, and about 8 lakh were held back because construction had not reached lintel level.

Instalments and construction stages

Stage Payment What must be done first
First instalment ₹60,000 Name on the verified eligible list; bank or post office account checked
Second instalment ₹60,000 House built up to lintel level using the first instalment

Money goes directly to the beneficiary’s bank or post office account. The Week reported that about 12,500 people who got money without being eligible have been asked to return it.

Checking status

  1. Open your district’s official website (for example howrah.gov.in or coochbehar.gov.in) and find the Banglar Bari or rural housing page.
  2. Select your block and open the Eligible, In-Eligible or Inactive list.
  3. Search the PDF for your name, father’s or husband’s name and gram panchayat.
  4. For payment status, check your bank or post office passbook for the ₹60,000 credits.
  5. If your name is on the list but the second instalment has not come, ask the gram panchayat or BDO office whether your lintel-level check has been recorded.

For PMAY-G, search AwaasSoft by registration number once a sanction is issued. Our PM Awas Gramin name check guide covers that route. Private sites with “Banglar Bari” in their name are not government portals.

Complaints and appeals

  • State scheme. Take the complaint to the BDO office with your Aadhaar, bank passbook and any list printout. The SOP set up control rooms in BDO, SDO and DM offices to call beneficiaries before and after verification.
  • PMAY-G. The framework gives 15 days to complain after a verified list has been displayed for at least 7 days. A district appellate committee hears appeals. Grievance officers at each level must dispose of complaints within 15 days, and you can also file on CPGRAMS (pgportal.gov.in).

Frequently asked questions

Is Banglar Awas Yojana the same as PMAY-G?

It was the state name for PMAY-G in West Bengal until central funds stopped in 2022. The state’s own scheme was Banglar Bari, now Paschim Banga Awas.

Can I apply online for West Bengal Awas Yojana?

No. The state scheme picks families from verified waiting lists, and PMAY-G names come from the Awaas+ 2024 survey, which closed in West Bengal on 31 August 2026.

How much money does Paschim Banga Awas give?

₹1.20 lakh in two instalments of ₹60,000, paid by the state government.

Why did I not get the second instalment?

Only families whose house reached lintel level with the first instalment qualified in August 2026. Ask the BDO office whether your inspection is recorded.

Where is the West Bengal Awas Yojana list 2026?

On your district’s official website, block-wise, as Eligible, In-Eligible and Inactive lists.

Has PM Awas Yojana restarted in West Bengal?

The Centre announced approval for 1 lakh PMAY-G houses on 14 July 2026. On 17 September 2026 AwaasSoft still showed no West Bengal sanctions for 2026-27.
