You can buy on EMI without a credit card by using debit card EMI, cardless EMI from a bank, an NBFC EMI card, or a consumer durable loan at the store. Each is a loan in your name. Most need only your registered mobile number, PAN and an OTP, but approval depends on a pre-approved offer from your bank or lender.

1. Debit card EMI

Banks give some savings account holders a pre-approved EMI limit on their debit card. The bank pays the merchant and you repay in instalments.

HDFC Bank’s EasyEMI on Debit Card is one example, and it blocks no money in your account. You can check eligibility by texting EASYEMI to 5676712 from your registered mobile, giving a missed call to 9643 22 22 22, or texting EASYEMI to 70700 22222 on WhatsApp. At a store you swipe the card, and ₹1 is authenticated with your PIN. Online, you choose the tenure at checkout, enter your registered mobile number and the last four digits of the card, then the OTP.

  • Late payment attracts ₹550 plus GST.
  • Pre-closure costs 3% of the outstanding principal plus GST.
  • The processing fee is not refunded if you cancel or close early.
  • HDFC Bank lists a 3-day cooling-off period with no prepayment penalty.

2. Cardless EMI from a bank

Cardless EMI uses your mobile number and PAN instead of a card. ICICI Bank offers it on shopping sites and apps such as Amazon, Flipkart, Croma and MakeMyTrip, and at retail stores.

  1. Add the product to your cart and go to checkout.
  2. Under EMI, select ICICI Bank Cardless EMI.
  3. Enter your registered mobile number and PAN.
  4. Enter the OTP sent to your phone and choose the tenure.

In a store, the retailer starts the transaction on the payment terminal and you share your mobile number, PAN and OTP. ICICI Bank charges 5% a year on an overdue EMI, ₹500 for each bounced auto-debit, and 5% of any amount you prepay.

3. NBFC EMI card

An EMI card is a digital card for EMI purchases only, which you can use without a physical card. Bajaj Finance’s Insta EMI Card gives a pre-qualified offer of up to ₹3,00,000 at over 1.5 lakh partner stores in more than 4,000 cities, with tenures of up to 60 months. It needs a PAN and Aadhaar number and a regular income, and carries a one-time ₹530 joining fee with no annual fee.

4. Consumer durable loan at the store

Electronics and appliance stores usually have lender desks that approve a loan for a phone, washing machine or TV on the spot. You pay any down payment to the store and repay the rest to the lender, usually by auto-debit. Our page on consumer durable and no-cost EMI loans explains how these offers work.

5. Personal loan

A personal loan pays money into your account, so you can buy from any seller, including gyms, hotels or services that have no EMI tie-up. It suits larger amounts. Use the EMI calculator to see the monthly payment before you apply.

What no-cost EMI without a credit card really costs

A no-cost EMI is still a loan with interest. Usually the seller gives a discount equal to the interest, so you pay the product price in instalments. The RBI said in 2013 that the concept of zero percent interest does not exist and that interest is often hidden in the processing fee. Before you accept an offer:

  • Compare the EMI price with the price for full payment. If a cash discount is lost, that is your interest.
  • Add the processing fee and GST to the cost.
  • Read the Key Fact Statement, which shows the annual percentage rate (APR) and all charges.

Credit cards also offer EMI; our guide to credit card EMI and no-cost EMI compares the two.

Your rights on a digital EMI loan

ItemDetails
Key Fact Statement.Under the RBI’s Digital Lending Directions, 2025, the lender must give you a KFS before you sign.
Cooling-off period. You can exit a digital loan without penalty during a cooling-off period of at least one day by repaying the principal and the proportionate APR.
Direct repayment. You must repay straight into the lender’s bank account, not a pass-through or pool account.
Check the app.The RBI’s website lists digital lending apps that banks and NBFCs have reported, under Citizen’s Corner.

A missed EMI is reported to credit bureaus like any other loan, so borrow only what you can repay on time.

Frequently asked questions

How can I buy a phone on EMI without a credit card?

Use debit card EMI or cardless EMI at checkout if your bank has a pre-approved offer, an NBFC EMI card, or a consumer durable loan at the store.

What is cardless EMI?

It is a loan approved with your mobile number, PAN and OTP, with no card needed. The bank pays the seller and you repay in monthly instalments.

Can I buy a washing machine on EMI without a credit card?

Yes. Appliance stores and shopping sites accept debit card EMI, cardless EMI and consumer durable loans, subject to the lender’s approval.

Can I get no-cost EMI without a credit card?

Yes, where the seller offers it on that payment method. Check the processing fee and whether you lose a discount for paying in full.

How do I know if I am eligible for debit card EMI?

Banks show pre-approved offers by SMS, missed call, net banking or at checkout. HDFC Bank, for example, lets you check by texting EASYEMI to 5676712.

Does cardless EMI affect my credit score?

Yes. It is a loan, so it appears on your credit report, and late payments lower your score.

Can I pay for a gym membership or hotel booking on EMI without a credit card?

Only if the merchant has an EMI tie-up with your bank or lender. Otherwise, a personal loan is the usual route.
