Best Credit Cards in India

The 16 cards we track, ranked on blended reward rate — and why that number is not the decision.

The best credit card for you is the one that matches your largest spending category. Across the 16 cards we track, the SBI Cashback Credit Card returns the most for an ordinary Indian household. Our blended estimate for it is 4.2%. The Axis Bank Atlas scores higher at 4.5%, but only if you transfer miles to an airline programme. If you do not, its real return collapses. That is the point of this page. The headline reward rate is not the decision.

Highest blended reward rate: 4.5% (Axis Bank Atlas). Highest with no redemption effort: 4.2% (SBI Cashback). As of 5 September 2026, from card terms published by the issuers. Fees below exclude the 18% GST unless stated.

Which credit card gives the highest return in India?

The table ranks every card we hold data on. The reward rate is our own blended estimate for a mixed spending pattern. It is not the accelerated rate an issuer advertises on one category.

How did we rank these cards?

We rank on one number only: the blended reward rate we estimate for a mixed spender. We hold no user ratings, so we publish none. There is no award here and no sponsored slot.

The estimate assumes ordinary spending. It does not assume you funnel every rupee through one accelerated category. Issuers rank on the accelerated rate, which is why their own tables look better than ours. Card terms also change without notice. Check the issuer page before you apply.

Why the reward rate is not the decision

Three things quietly outrank it.

The first is the redemption path. Infinia scores 3.3% only through SmartBuy. Atlas scores 4.5% only through airline transfers. Miss the path and you are left with a statement credit worth far less. Cashback has no path. That is why the SBI Cashback card beats richer cards for most people. You can work out your own number on the reward value calculator.

The second is the cap. SBI Cashback pays 5% online, but stops at ₹5,000 of cashback per statement cycle. Above roughly ₹1,00,000 of online spend a month, extra spending earns nothing at that rate. A cap turns a headline rate into an average rate.

The third is the fee, and the fee is bigger than printed. Every annual fee carries 18% GST on top. A ₹5,000 fee is ₹5,900. A ₹12,500 fee is ₹14,750. Comparison sites routinely omit this. On Infinia you must earn ₹14,750 of value before you break even.

What does each card really cost after GST?

Work out the break-even spend, not the fee. Divide the fee including GST by your blended reward rate. Regalia Gold costs ₹2,950 and returns about 2.6%. Break-even is roughly ₹1,13,000 of annual spend. Below that, a free card wins.

Fee waivers change the sum entirely. Millennia waives its fee at ₹1,00,000 of spend a year. Regalia Gold waives at ₹4,00,000. Atlas has no waiver at all, so its fee is unavoidable every year. If your spending is under ₹2,00,000 a year, start with the lifetime free cards instead.

Which card suits which spender?

Mostly online shopping

The SBI Cashback card is the clearest answer in India. Flat 5% online, no merchant list, credited automatically. Offline spends earn only 1%, so it is a poor sole card. More options sit on our cashback card page.

Frequent international travel

Scapia charges no forex markup and no fee. Most Indian cards charge 3.5%, which is ₹7,000 on a ₹2,00,000 foreign spend. IDFC FIRST Select charges 1.99%. Infinia and Regalia Gold charge 2%. The markup usually matters more than the reward rate abroad.

Your first card

SBI Card Unnati is secured against a fixed deposit. The reward rate is poor at 0.5%. That is fine. Its job is to build a credit file, not to earn. Read the first credit card guide before applying anywhere.

What the RBI rules already give you

Two protections are worth knowing before you apply.

A bank cannot upgrade your card without explicit consent. If it does and bills you, it must reverse the charge and pay you twice the reversed amount. That is paragraph 6(a)(iv) of the RBI Master Direction on credit and debit cards.

Closure must happen within seven working days of your request. Delay costs the issuer ₹500 per calendar day, payable to you. That is paragraph 8(a). Insurance bundled with a card also needs your written or digital consent under paragraph 6(a)(iii).

Frequently asked questions

Which is the best credit card in India right now?

There is no single answer, and any page giving one is guessing. On our blended estimate the Axis Bank Atlas ranks highest at 4.5%, but that value exists only through airline mile transfers. For a household with no travel plans, the SBI Cashback card at 4.2% is the better card. Match the card to your largest spending category first.

Is a lifetime free credit card good enough?

For most people, yes. Amazon Pay ICICI Bank, Scapia, IDFC FIRST Select, AU LIT and IndusInd Tiger all carry no annual fee. Their reward rates run from 1.2% to 3.0%. A paid card only wins once your spending clears its break-even. Divide the fee including 18% GST by the reward rate to find that point.

Does applying for a credit card hurt my credit score?

Each application triggers a hard enquiry on your bureau file. One enquiry has a small effect. Several within a few weeks look like distress borrowing and can cost you an approval. Space applications out. See what actually moves a credit score before you apply.

How much annual fee is too much?

Compare the fee including GST against your likely reward. Infinia at ₹14,750 needs about ₹4,50,000 of annual spend at 3.3% just to break even. Below that you are paying for status. Also check the waiver threshold, because a waived fee changes the arithmetic completely.

Can a bank charge me for a card I never asked for?

No. Unsolicited issue or upgrade is prohibited outright. If you are billed, the issuer must reverse the charge and pay a penalty of twice the reversed amount. Put the complaint in writing and cite paragraph 6(a)(iv) of the RBI Master Direction.
