Aadhaar lets you change your name twice and your date of birth once in a lifetime. Both changes are made at an Aadhaar centre, not online, for ₹75, with a proof document in your name. Once the limit is used, a further change goes through a UIDAI regional office under its exception process, and a date of birth change then needs a birth certificate and an affidavit.
Key facts

Lifetime update limits
Regulation 19(3) says that once you have updated your date of birth once, gender once or name twice, any further update follows a process UIDAI specifies. In practice, the standard route is closed and the regional office decides.
Some name corrections do not use up a chance. UIDAI’s 2021 name and gender SOP excludes three cases:
- fixing a typing mistake made by the enrolment operator
- fixing a transliteration error
- a name update that follows a change in your regional language
If such a request is rejected wrongly, raise it with the regional office through 1947, a letter or email so the office can reprocess it.
Documents accepted for name change
For a name update you need one Proof of Identity (PoI) document carrying your name and photograph. UIDAI’s update list (List IV) accepts, among others:
- Indian passport, driving licence, voter ID or ration card
- Service photo ID or pensioner photo ID issued by a government, PSU or statutory body
- Marksheet or certificate from a recognised board or university
- SC, ST or OBC certificate, or an MGNREGA job card
- Marriage certificate or divorce decree, with an old-name photo ID if the certificate has no photo
- Gazette notification, for a change in first name or full name
For a full or first-name change, UIDAI’s FAQ asks for the gazette notification plus an old PoI showing the name now in your Aadhaar, and the gazette address should match your Aadhaar.
Your name is copied exactly as it appears in the document; nothing extra is added. Name and date of birth must also match across all the documents you submit. Update your PAN afterwards, or a mismatch can break PAN–Aadhaar linking.
The UIDAI certificate format
The “Certificate for Aadhaar enrolment/update” is UIDAI’s standard form, signed by an MP, MLA, gazetted officer, tehsildar or village head. For updates, List IV accepts it only as proof of address, not as proof of identity or date of birth. The exceptions are certificates from NACO or state health officials and from District Child Protection Officers, which count as identity proof. For a name or date of birth change, bring a document from the lists here.
Documents accepted for date of birth change
List IV accepts these as Proof of Date of Birth for updates:
- Birth certificate issued under the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969
- Indian passport
- Marksheet or certificate from a recognised board or university
- Service photo ID card from a government, PSU or statutory body
- Pensioner photo ID card or pension payment order
- Transgender certificate under the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act, 2019
Which one you may use depends on what UIDAI already holds, under the 24 December 2025 SOP:
| Your current date of birth | What you must submit |
|---|---|
| Declared or approximate, age under 18 | Birth certificate only (NRIs may use a passport) |
| Declared or approximate, age 18 or above | Any accepted date of birth document |
| Verified with a birth certificate | Corrected birth certificate with the same registration number and registrar, plus affidavit |
| Verified with another document (18 or above) | Corrected version of the same document, or a birth certificate, plus affidavit |
| Wrong date typed by the operator | The same document as before, or a self-declaration (Annex-II) |
The affidavit (Annex-I) goes on non-judicial stamp paper of at least ₹10, attested by a magistrate or notary. A married woman can use a pre-marriage document with proof of the name change.
A “corrected version” means the same authority, description and year. A marksheet from a re-sat exam in a later year does not count.
Online vs centre update
UIDAI’s FAQ is direct: online, you can update only your address and documents. Name, date of birth and gender need a visit.
- Book a slot at an Aadhaar Seva Kendra, or walk into any Aadhaar enrolment centre.
- Carry the original proof document.
- Ask for a demographic update and check the details on the operator’s screen before you give biometrics.
- Pay ₹75, or nothing if you are also doing a biometric update.
- Keep the acknowledgement slip; it carries your enrolment ID (EID) or update request number (URN).
- Track progress under Check Enrolment & Update Status on myAadhaar. If it is pending beyond 30 days, file a complaint there with the EID or URN.
UIDAI’s FAQ says updates typically take 30 to 90 days. For address and document changes, which you can do online, see our guide to the free online document update. If OTPs no longer reach you, fix that first with our mobile number update guide.
Exceeding the limit: exception process
Name
After both chances are used, the 2021 SOP lets regional offices consider these cases:
- a change after marriage, divorce or adoption, backed by the certificate
- expanding or editing initials
- changing the order of the names you already have
- a complete name change, backed by a gazette notification
- Apply for the update at an Aadhaar centre with the document.
- Email help@uidai.gov.in or call 1947 with your enrolment ID (EID) from the slip and ask for exception handling.
- The regional office checks the request and, if satisfied, reprocesses it.
Date of birth
A second date of birth change is processed only with a birth certificate, or a corrected one with the same registration number and registrar, plus the Annex-I affidavit. UIDAI’s FAQ asks you to call 1947, or visit your state’s regional office with a valid reason and documents. If the office rejects it, escalate through the regional office or 1947.
The SOP also warns that UIDAI may deactivate an Aadhaar found to carry a date of birth backed by a false document. Reactivation needs a full biometric update, an online-verifiable birth certificate and an affidavit, and an FIR is possible.
Frequently asked questions
Can I update my name in Aadhaar online?
No. UIDAI’s FAQ says online updates cover only address and documents. Name changes are made at an Aadhaar centre.
How many times can I change my date of birth in Aadhaar?
Once. A further change needs the regional office exception route with a birth certificate and affidavit.
What is the fee for a name or date of birth update?
₹75 at an Aadhaar centre. It is free if done along with a biometric update.
Does fixing an operator’s spelling mistake count as one of my two name changes?
No. UIDAI’s SOP excludes operator typos, transliteration errors and regional-language changes from the count.
Is a gazetted officer’s certificate valid for a name change?
Not for an update. List IV accepts the standard certificate from MPs, MLAs, gazetted officers and tehsildars only as address proof.
Can a 10th marksheet be used to change date of birth?
Yes for adults whose date of birth is declared or approximate. Children under 18 must use a birth certificate.
What if my update request is rejected?
Check the reason on myAadhaar, then file a grievance there, call 1947 or email help@uidai.gov.in.
