Which updates need a centre visit

A few changes can be done without a visit. You can change your address and upload identity and address documents on myAadhaar (the document upload is free until 14 June 2027), and the Aadhaar app updates your mobile number and email. For the rest, you must go to a centre, where an operator confirms who you are with your fingerprint or iris:

ItemDetails
Demographic updatename, gender, date of birth, address, mobile number or email.
Biometric updatefingerprints, iris scan and photograph.
Mandatory biometric update for childrendue at age 5 and again at 15. UIDAI says a missing update can cause problems with scheme benefits and exam registrations such as NEET, JEE and CUET.
Document update at a centreif you prefer not to upload online.
Download and printif you have lost your Aadhaar and your mobile is not registered.

UIDAI limits some changes. You can update your name twice and your gender once. Beyond that, you must apply to a UIDAI regional office with documents such as a Gazette notification. You can change your photograph any number of times.

For the free online document route, see our guide to the free Aadhaar document update. For the app and doorstep options, see updating your mobile number in Aadhaar.

Finding a centre

Two kinds of centre offer updates.

  • Aadhaar Seva Kendras (ASKs) are run by UIDAI. UIDAI’s list shows more than 100 of them, including centres in all metro cities and state capitals. Depending on its size, an ASK can handle 160, 320 or 640 requests a day. These are the centres you can book online.
  • Aadhaar enrolment centres run by banks, post offices, BSNL and state governments. UIDAI puts their number at over 66,000.

Not every centre offers every service. UIDAI groups them into centres that do all enrolments (including adults) and updates, all enrolments except adults plus updates, child enrolment with mobile update, and child enrolment only. The Bhuvan Aadhaar portal (bhuvan-app3.nrsc.gov.in/aadhaar) shows each centre’s address and services, so check it before you go. You can visit any centre in India. It does not have to be the one where you first enrolled.

Booking an appointment online

  1. Go to bookappointment.uidai.gov.in.
  2. Enter your mobile number or email ID. It does not have to be the one linked to Aadhaar.
  3. Enter the OTP you receive.
  4. Click Centre Appointment and fill in the details asked.
  5. Select an Aadhaar Seva Kendra by PIN code or from those near you.
  6. Choose the service, such as demographic or biometric update.
  7. Select a date and time slot and confirm.
  8. Save the appointment confirmation and take it with you.

You can book for yourself or a family member, up to 2 appointments a month per person. UIDAI’s official social media posts show the same booking through the Aadhaar app.

If you cannot make it, reschedule the booking. UIDAI’s FAQ says the payment for a cancelled booking is refunded, usually within 7 to 21 days. It also advises rescheduling if you did not get the booked service at the ASK. Walk-ins get a token too, but a booking saves waiting.

Fee list for updates

UIDAI’s charges list, inclusive of taxes:

Service Fee
New Aadhaar enrolment Free
Biometric update, first time at age 5 to 7 Free
Biometric update, first or second time at age 15 to 17 Free
Biometric update at age 7 to 15 Free until 30 September 2026, then ₹125
Biometric update, any other case ₹125
Demographic update with a biometric update Free
Demographic update on its own ₹75
Document update at a centre ₹75
Document update on myAadhaar Free until 14 June 2027
Email update through the Aadhaar app Free until 31 December 2026
Aadhaar download and colour print ₹40

The child’s mandatory biometric update is a stand-alone transaction, so it cannot be combined with other changes in the same visit. UIDAI waived the fee for ages 7 to 15 from 1 October 2025 for one year, and its August 2026 release still gives 30 September 2026 as the end date. If your child is in that group and has missed the update, book before then to avoid the ₹125 fee.

You pay at the ASK’s cash counter. UIDAI says the charges are displayed at the centre and printed at the bottom of your acknowledgement slip, so check them if someone asks for more.

What to carry

  • Your Aadhaar number, or the Aadhaar letter or e-Aadhaar.
  • The appointment confirmation.
  • Original documents for the change, from UIDAI’s list of supporting documents. A name change needs a proof of identity, a date of birth change a proof of date of birth, and an address change a proof of address.
  • The filled Aadhaar enrolment/update form, which you can download from the UIDAI website.

The operator scans your originals and returns them, so collect them before you leave. Check your details on screen in both English and your regional language before signing, and keep the acknowledgement slip with your request number. Submitting a request does not guarantee the update; UIDAI verifies it first.

Once the update is done, download a fresh e-Aadhaar. If your name or date of birth changed, also check that your PAN still matches, as our page on PAN and Aadhaar linking explains.
