How to buy euros in India

  1. Choose an authorised seller: an authorised dealer bank, or a full-fledged money changer licensed by the RBI.
  2. Compare the seller’s rate for the product you want (notes, forex card or transfer) against the day’s reference rate.
  3. Give your PAN. It is mandatory for all transactions under the Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS).
  4. Pay in cash only if the total is below ₹50,000. From ₹50,000 upward, pay by cheque, banker’s cheque, pay order, demand draft, or debit, credit or prepaid card.
  5. Keep the notes you buy within USD 3,000 or its equivalent per trip for most countries, and load the rest on a card.

Limits and tax

A resident can send or spend up to USD 2,50,000 a financial year under LRS. From 1 April 2026, tax collected at source (TCS) is nil on the first ₹10 lakh a year for most purposes, then 20% above that. Education and medical spending attract 2% above ₹10 lakh. Overseas tour packages attract 2% from the first rupee. Our guide to LRS limits and TCS explains how TCS is credited back against your tax.

Selling euros back after a trip

RBI rules let you keep foreign currency worth up to USD 2,000 after you return. Notes and travellers’ cheques above that must be surrendered to an authorised person within 180 days of your return. When you sell, you get the bank’s buying rate. SBI’s note buying rate on 16 September was ₹107.75, ₹3.04 below the reference rate.

If you bring back foreign currency notes worth more than USD 5,000, declare them to Customs when you land. The same applies if all your foreign exchange together, including travellers’ cheques, is worth more than USD 10,000.
