Which GBP to INR rate to use

ItemDetails
RBI/FBIL reference rate.FBIL publishes it for the US dollar, pound, euro and yen on each Mumbai business day, and the RBI shows it on its home page. Indian rules and many contracts cite this rate.
Mid-market rate. The wholesale rate between banks, shown on currency converters. It moves through the day.
Retail rate. What your bank, forex card, remittance app or money changer actually pays or charges. It includes a margin, so it is always worse than the mid-market rate.

To judge a quote, compare it with the mid-market rate at the same moment. The gap is what the service is charging you.

How to convert GBP to INR at a fair rate

  1. Check the reference or mid-market rate on the day you plan to convert.
  2. Get quotes from two or three providers: your bank, an RBI-authorised money changer and a remittance service.
  3. Compare the rupees you will receive after all fees, not the headline rate.
  4. When paying by card in the UK, choose to be charged in pounds. Paying in rupees at the terminal triggers dynamic currency conversion, which usually costs more.
  5. Deal only with banks and money changers authorised by the RBI under the Foreign Exchange Management Act, 1999.

Rules on sending money to the UK

Resident individuals, including minors, can send up to USD 2,50,000 abroad each financial year (April to March) under the RBI’s Liberalised Remittance Scheme. That covers UK tuition, living costs and permitted investments, converted at the day’s pound rate. Tax collected at source may apply above set thresholds; our guide to LRS limits and TCS explains when.

What moves the pound against the rupee

ItemDetails
Interest rates.Decisions by the Bank of England and the RBI change the returns investors earn in each currency. The RBI’s repo rate is 5.25%, and its next decision is due after the 5–7 October 2026 meeting.
The US dollar. The rupee trades mainly against the dollar. The GBP/INR rate largely follows how the pound moves against the dollar.
Oil prices and capital flows.India is a large buyer of imported crude oil, and foreign investment flows add to or reduce rupee demand.
Inflation and growth.Data from either economy can shift the rate within a day.
