The rupee started 2026 at about ₹90.20 per dollar on 2 January, on ECB cross rates. It weakened through the first five months and touched about ₹96.83 on 20 May. Since then it has traded mostly between ₹94 and ₹96.
Over the year to 16 September 2026, the dollar rose from about ₹88.05 to ₹95.96. That is roughly an 8% fall in what ₹1 buys in dollars, which raises the rupee cost of US tuition, travel and imports.
Which INR to USD rate to use
| Item | Details |
|---|---|
| RBI/FBIL reference rate. | Financial Benchmarks India Ltd publishes it for the US dollar and a few other currencies on each Mumbai business day, and the RBI shows it on its home page. Indian rules and many contracts cite this rate. |
| Mid-market rate. | The wholesale rate between banks, shown on currency converters. It moves through the trading day. |
| Retail rate. | What your bank, forex card, remittance service or money changer actually charges. It includes a margin, so you get fewer dollars than the mid-market rate suggests. |
How to convert rupees to dollars at a fair rate
- Note the reference or mid-market rate on the day you plan to buy dollars.
- Get quotes from two or three providers: your bank, an RBI-authorised money changer and a remittance service.
- Compare the dollars you will receive after all fees and taxes, not the headline rate.
- When paying by card in the US, choose to be charged in dollars. Paying in rupees at the terminal triggers dynamic currency conversion, which usually costs more.
- Deal only with banks and money changers authorised by the RBI under the Foreign Exchange Management Act, 1999.
Limits on buying and sending dollars
Resident individuals, including minors, can send up to USD 2,50,000 abroad in each financial year (April to March) under the RBI’s Liberalised Remittance Scheme. That limit has not changed since May 2015. It covers tuition, living costs, gifts and permitted investments. Tax collected at source may apply above set thresholds; our guide to LRS limits and TCS explains when.
For travel, the RBI’s FAQs let you buy foreign currency notes and coins worth up to USD 3,000 per visit for most countries. Anything above that should go on a forex card, traveller’s cheques or a bank draft.
What moves the rupee against the dollar
| Item | Details |
|---|---|
| Interest rates. | The RBI’s repo rate is 5.25%, and its next decision follows the 5–7 October 2026 meeting. US Federal Reserve decisions matter as much. |
| Oil prices. | India imports most of its crude oil and pays in dollars, so costlier oil raises dollar demand. |
| Capital flows. | Foreign investors buying or selling Indian shares and bonds add to or reduce rupee demand. |
| RBI market operations. | The RBI buys or sells dollars to curb sharp swings, though it does not fix a level. |
