Post office MIS interest rate 2026, quarter by quarter
The Department of Economic Affairs sets small savings rates every quarter. Its office memorandum of 30 June 2026 says rates for 1 July to 30 September 2026 “shall remain unchanged” from the April to June quarter.
| Quarter | POMIS rate | Notified |
|---|---|---|
| April to June 2026 (Q1 FY 2026-27) | 7.4% | End of March 2026 |
| July to September 2026 (Q2 FY 2026-27) | 7.4% | 30 June 2026 |
| October to December 2026 (Q3 FY 2026-27) | Not yet announced | Due by 30 September 2026 |
| All four quarters of FY 2025-26 | 7.4% | Quarterly |
A quarterly revision only affects accounts opened in that quarter. An account opened in April 2026 keeps paying 7.4% until it matures in April 2031, even if the rate later changes.
How the rate has moved since 2022
The National Savings Institute publishes the full rate history. POMIS paid 6.6% through the first half of 2022-23. The government then raised it three times in quick succession.
| Period | POMIS rate |
|---|---|
| April to September 2022 | 6.6% |
| October to December 2022 | 6.7% |
| January to March 2023 | 7.1% |
| 1 April 2023 to 30 September 2026 | 7.4% |
How much you earn each month at 7.4%
Monthly income is the deposit multiplied by 7.4%, divided by 12. The scheme rounds each payment to the nearest rupee. Interest you leave uncollected does not earn anything extra.
| Deposit | Yearly interest | Monthly payout | Interest over 5 years |
|---|---|---|---|
| ₹1,00,000 | ₹7,400 | ₹617 | ₹37,000 |
| ₹5,00,000 | ₹37,000 | ₹3,083 | ₹1,85,000 |
| ₹9,00,000 (single account limit) | ₹66,600 | ₹5,550 | ₹3,33,000 |
| ₹15,00,000 (joint account limit) | ₹1,11,000 | ₹9,250 | ₹5,55,000 |
You get the deposit back at maturity. Because payouts do not compound inside the scheme, many investors route them into a recurring deposit. The RD calculator shows what that adds.
Who can open a POMIS account and how much can go in
The National Savings (Monthly Income Account) Scheme, 2019 sets the rules. An account can be opened by:
- a single adult;
- up to three adults jointly;
- a minor aged 10 or more, in their own name;
- a guardian on behalf of a minor or a person of unsound mind.
You may hold more than one account, but the ceiling applies across all of them. Your share of a joint account counts as one half or one third of its balance, depending on the number of holders. The limits were raised to ₹9 lakh single and ₹15 lakh joint by a notification of 31 March 2023.
How to open a post office MIS account

- Submit your Aadhaar and PAN, plus a photograph, for KYC.

Premature closure and maturity
You cannot close the account in the first year. After that, apply in Form-2:
- After 1 year, up to 3 years: 2% of the deposit is deducted. On ₹9 lakh that is ₹18,000.
- After 3 years, before 5 years: 1% of the deposit is deducted, or ₹9,000 on ₹9 lakh.
At maturity, apply in Form-3 to get the deposit back. If the holder dies before maturity, the account can be closed and the deposit refunded to the nominee or legal heir. Interest is paid up to the month before the refund.
Tax on POMIS interest
POMIS gives no deduction on the amount you invest, and the interest is fully taxable. From 1 April 2026 it is taxed under the Income-tax Act, 2025 as income from other sources, at your slab rate. Declare it in your return even if no tax was deducted. Senior citizens can compare this with the 8.2% Senior Citizen Savings Scheme.
