To add a name to a ration card, apply to your state food department with the new member’s Aadhaar and a birth certificate (for a child) or a marriage certificate plus a deletion certificate from the old card (for a spouse). To remove a name, you usually need a death certificate, or the member’s marriage or transfer papers. Most states take both requests online, and several charge nothing.

When a name must be added or removed

The NFSA portal describes identification of beneficiaries as a continuous process. States add people on account of birth and genuine left-out households, and remove them on account of death, migration, and ineligible, fake or duplicate entries.

In practice you apply to add a name when:

  • a child is born, or an older child was never added
  • you marry and your spouse moves into your household
  • another relative, such as a dependent parent, joins the household

You apply to remove a name when:

  • a member dies
  • a daughter or son marries and moves to another household’s card
  • a member moves to another state or sets up a separate household

Removing names on time matters. The person moving needs a deletion certificate from your card before any other card can add them. States also weed out duplicate and dead-member entries, which can hold up the whole card.

One limit applies to additions. The NFSA covers a maximum of 81.35 crore people, and each state has a coverage ceiling. The food ministry has said new beneficiaries are added within those state ceilings, so an addition to a priority household card can take time in some states.

Documents for adding a member

Lists vary by state. The table combines what Odisha and Puducherry ask for on their official portals.

Who you are adding Documents
Newborn or child Birth certificate from the local body; child’s Aadhaar (Puducherry asks for it for all children); parents’ ID; existing ration card. Puducherry also asks for a study certificate if the child is above 5.
Spouse after marriage Marriage certificate; deletion (name removal) certificate from the parents’ card; spouse’s Aadhaar; your ration card
Other adult relative Deletion certificate from their old card; Aadhaar; proof of relationship; a notarised affidavit (Puducherry)

Puducherry also requires Aadhaar consent and a declaration that an adult being added holds no ration card anywhere else in India. If your child has no birth certificate yet, our guide to getting a birth certificate online covers the steps.

Documents for removing a member

Reason Documents
Death Death certificate and the member’s Aadhaar
Marriage Marriage certificate (Puducherry also accepts a certificate from a temple, church or mosque) and Aadhaar
Transfer, divorce or missing member Transfer or appointment order, divorce order, or police FIR, with a notarised affidavit and Aadhaar

If the person being removed is the head of the family, name the next head in the same request and update the other members’ relationships. Under the NFSA, the eldest woman aged 18 or above is treated as the head of household.

Online application steps

Every state runs its own system. Maharashtra uses rcms.mahafood.gov.in, Odisha uses the Odisha One portal, and Delhi’s food department is at nfs.delhi.gov.in. To find yours, open nfsa.gov.in and use the state portal links.

  1. Open your state’s ration card portal and register or log in, usually with a mobile OTP or Aadhaar OTP.
  2. Choose the service: “Add name”, “Inclusion of member”, “Delete name” or similar.
  3. Enter your ration card number and check the existing members.
  4. Fill in the new member’s details as they appear on Aadhaar, or select the member to remove and the reason.
  5. Upload the documents. Puducherry, for example, accepts only PDF files of at least 30 KB.
  6. Give Aadhaar consent where asked and submit.
  7. Note the application number and track it on the same portal.

If your state has no online option, fill in its form at the local food supply or rationing office. Gujarat’s forms are free, and its fee page lists a one-day service time for adding or deleting a name. Our guide to ration card status and card types explains what each application stage means.

A priority household card gets 5 kg of grain per person a month, so each added member raises the family’s quota. Antyodaya cards get a fixed 35 kg per family. New members usually also need Aadhaar-based e-KYC, which the food ministry wants all beneficiaries to complete, and which can be done at any fair price shop.

Name correction on the card

For a spelling mistake or a changed name, apply for correction rather than removal and addition. Puducherry asks for:

  • Spelling correction: the member’s birth certificate, voter ID, Aadhaar, and a supporting document such as a school transfer certificate, mark sheet or passport.
  • Change of name: the same documents plus a court order or an affidavit with a Gazette notification.

Correct the name in Aadhaar first if it is wrong there, because ration portals match your details against Aadhaar. Our guide to publishing a name change in the Gazette covers a legal name change.

Frequently asked questions

How can I add a name to my ration card online?

Log in to your state food department portal, choose the add-member service, enter the member’s Aadhaar details and upload a birth or marriage certificate. Track the application number on the same portal.

What documents are needed to add a wife’s name to a ration card?

A marriage certificate, a deletion certificate from her parents’ ration card, her Aadhaar and your ration card. Some states ask for more.

How do I remove a deceased member’s name?

Apply for deletion on your state portal or at the supply office with the death certificate and the member’s Aadhaar.

Can a person be on two ration cards?

No. States remove duplicate entries, and Puducherry makes applicants declare that an adult being added holds no other card in India.

Is there a fee to add or remove a name?

It depends on the state. Gujarat charges nothing for adding, deleting or correcting a name.

Can I add a member through the Mera Ration app?

The official FAQ lists card details, entitlements, transactions, fair price shop search and grievances. Additions are handled on state portals.

Why is my new member’s name not added yet?

Common reasons are a missing deletion certificate, an Aadhaar mismatch, or the state’s NFSA coverage ceiling. Check the remark on your application status.
