To know your ration card status, open your state’s food department portal and use its application status or ration card search. States issue ration cards and track applications, while nfsa.gov.in only links to them. Your card type decides your grain: an AAY card gets 35 kg a month per family, and a PHH card gets 5 kg per person, both free of cost under PMGKAY.

How to check ration card status

For a new application

  1. Go to nfsa.gov.in and open Ration Card Details on State Portals, or your state’s page under the State menu.
  2. Follow the link to your state’s ration card management system (RCMS) or food department website.
  3. Choose the application status or public login option. States label it differently.
  4. Enter your application or acknowledgement number, and the OTP if asked.
  5. Read the current stage and any remark from the verifying officer.

Maharashtra, for example, runs this through its RCMS Public Login. Bihar has an Application Status page on rcms.bihar.gov.in.

For an existing card and family details

Use My RC Details on nfsa.gov.in. It searches by ration card number and needs a captcha. The Mera Ration app, also on UMANG, shows your ration card details, grain balance, the last six months of transactions and the nearest fair price shop. Your state’s transparency portal lists each card with its members. Delhi, for instance, publishes Ration Card and Beneficiary Details on nfs.delhi.gov.in.

Can you check by mobile number?

The NFSA My RC Details page offers only a ration card number search. Some state portals and the Mera Ration app work with an OTP to your registered mobile. If your number has changed, update it with the state food department first. Aadhaar OTPs also need a current mobile number in Aadhaar; our guide to the Aadhaar mobile number update covers that.

Application stages and what they mean

Stage names differ by state. Maharashtra’s RCMS dashboard sorts applications into the groups below, which match what most portals show.

Stage What it means What you do
Received / submitted The application is logged with a number Save the number
Pending at department An officer is verifying documents, address and eligibility Wait; answer any field visit
Pending towards applicant The office needs something from you, such as a document or correction Read the remark and respond quickly
Approved The card is issued or ready for printing or download Collect the card; check member names
Cancelled / rejected The application was refused Read the reason; see the steps below

Maharashtra notifies a 30-day timeline for issuing a new ration card. Its dashboard on 15 September 2026 showed a median of 11 days for approved new cards, though some took far longer. Other states set their own timelines.

AAY, PHH and NPHH explained

NFSA covers two categories. The Act leaves it to each state to identify families and frame its own criteria, within a coverage number fixed for the state.

ItemDetails
AAY (Antyodaya Anna Yojana)the poorest of the poor, identified under the AAY guidelines. The card is often called the Antyodaya card.
PHH (Priority Household)all other households the state picks for NFSA coverage. “PH” or “P H” on a card usually stands for priority household.
NPHH (Non-Priority Household)a state-issued card for families outside NFSA. It is not an NFSA category, so any grain or subsidy on it comes from the state’s own scheme.

Some states split these further. Tamil Nadu, for instance, has sub-types such as PHH-AAY, NPHH-S and NPHH-NC, according to Goodreturns. Check your state food department for the codes it uses. Older cards may still carry APL or BPL labels from before NFSA.

Entitlement under each category

Card Grain under NFSA Price now
AAY 35 kg per household per month, whatever the family size Free
PHH 5 kg per person per month (a family of four gets 20 kg) Free
NPHH and other state cards No NFSA entitlement; set by the state Set by the state

Before 2023, NFSA grain cost ₹3 a kg for rice, ₹2 for wheat and ₹1 for coarse grains. From 1 January 2023 the Centre made it free for AAY and PHH beneficiaries, then extended this for five years from 1 January 2024. Under One Nation One Ration Card, which covers all 36 States and UTs, you can draw your ration at any e-PoS fair price shop. Our page on government financial schemes lists other benefits for low-income families.

Application rejected: next steps

  1. Read the rejection reason on the portal. Common ones are missing documents, an address mismatch or an existing card in another name.
  2. Fix the problem, such as updating the address in Aadhaar or getting a missing certificate.
  3. Apply again on the state portal, or ask the food and supply office whether the application can be reopened.
  4. If PHH or AAY coverage is refused and you think you qualify, complain to the District Grievance Redressal Officer (DGRO). NFSA provides DGROs and State Food Commissions for this.
  5. Use your state’s toll-free number, listed under Toll Free Helpline Numbers in States on nfsa.gov.in. Delhi’s is 1967 or 1800110841.

Our guide to updating Aadhaar documents helps if the problem is an address mismatch.
