Best Credit Cards for Senior Citizens

No Indian issuer sells a senior citizen credit card. Here are the four routes to approval on pension income, ranked.

There is no credit card in India built for senior citizens. No large issuer publishes one. What exists instead are four routes to a card once your salary has stopped. Ranking those routes is the useful thing to do, so that is what this page does. For most pensioners the fixed-deposit-backed card wins, and it wins for a reason that has nothing to do with rewards.

We do not publish a leaderboard of “senior citizen credit cards” because the products do not exist. A table of ranked cards here would be invented. What follows is ranked, but it ranks routes to approval.

Is there a credit card made for senior citizens in India?

No. Issuers segment cards by spend, not by age. A few banks waive fees for existing pension account holders. That is a relationship concession, not a product. So the real question is not which card is best. It is which route gets a retired person approved at all.

Income proof is the block. Card underwriting is built around a salary slip and Form 16. A pension is regular income and lenders do accept it. But the published income floors are written for salaried applicants. On the cards we track, those floors run from ₹3,00,000 to ₹36,00,000 a year (issuer websites, as of 15 August 2026). A pension rarely clears the higher ones.

The four routes, ranked

Rank Route How you qualify What it costs Who it suits
1 Card against your own fixed deposit The deposit is the security. No income proof and no credit history needed. SBI Card Unnati carries no joining fee and no annual fee (SBI Card, as of 15 August 2026). Your FD stays locked. Almost every retired person, and anyone with a thin or damaged credit file
2 Add-on card on a child’s or spouse’s account The principal cardholder names you. You are not underwritten at all. Usually free. The bill and the legal liability stay with the principal cardholder. Anyone who wants a card in days, with no paperwork of their own
3 A card from the bank that pays your pension Relationship underwriting on the account the pension lands in. Varies. Ask for the fee schedule in writing before you sign. Pensioners with a long-standing account at one bank
4 An ordinary unsecured card on pension income Pension treated as income, assessed against the published floor. Fees from nil to ₹12,500 plus GST a year on the cards we track. Higher pensions with rental or interest income alongside

Figures above are from issuer websites, as of 15 August 2026. Fees are the advertised floor. Your offer can differ.

Why the fixed deposit route wins

A secured card turns an asset you already hold into a credit line. You do not have to earn anything. The deposit keeps paying interest while it sits as security. The limit is a share of the deposit value, so your spending is capped by design. That cap is a feature at this stage of life, not a limit.

It also does the one thing that matters most. A secured card reports to the credit bureaus like any other card. Six months of on-time payment builds a live credit file. Many retired people have no active loan and no active card. Their score then goes quiet, and a quiet file is scored poorly. If you want to improve your credit score after retirement, this is the cheapest way.

The cost is that your money is locked. Compare it against a loan against your FD before you decide. A loan against deposit is cheaper if you need cash once. A card is better if you need a payment instrument you use every month.

What the add-on card gets wrong

An add-on card is the fastest route. It is also the one people misunderstand. The RBI’s Master Direction is blunt about who owes the money. Add-on cards are issued to people the principal cardholder names, “with the clear understanding that the liability will be that of the principal cardholder” (paragraph 7(e)).

So the spending appears on your child’s statement, and the debt is theirs. It builds no credit history in your name. It is a convenience, not a credit product. Use it if convenience is all you want.

The RBI rules that protect you here

Cold calls offering “senior citizen” cards are common, and most are insurance cross-sells. The Master Direction on Credit Card and Debit Card — Issuance and Conduct Directions, 2022 gives you specific protections. These are worth knowing before you take a call.

Rule What it says Where
No card without consent “The written consent of the applicant shall be required before issuing a credit card.” Unsolicited issue is strictly prohibited. Para 6(a)(viii), 6(a)(iv)
Penalty for an unwanted card If a card is issued without consent and billed, the issuer reverses the charges and pays a penalty “amounting to twice the value of the charges reversed”. Para 6(a)(iv)
Unused card must be closed If the card is not activated for 30 days, the issuer must seek your OTP consent. Without it, the account is closed free of cost within seven working days. Para 6(a)(vi)
Insurance needs written consent Any bundled insurance needs “explicit consent in writing or in digital mode from the cardholders along with the details of nominee/s”. Para 6(a)(iii)
No silent limit increase Issuers “shall not unilaterally upgrade credit cards and enhance credit limits”. Your explicit consent is required. Para 11(b)
Closure in seven days A closure request must be honoured in seven working days. Delay costs the issuer “₹500 per calendar day of delay payable to the cardholder”. Para 8(a)

The ₹500 a day is a real entitlement and almost nobody claims it. If you close a card and the bank drags, write to the nodal officer and cite paragraph 8(a).

How a fixed deposit card affects your tax

The deposit behind the card still earns taxable interest. Under the old regime, section 80TTB lets a senior citizen deduct up to ₹50,000 of interest income, including bank FD interest. That deduction does not exist in the new regime. The basic exemption for a senior citizen is ₹3,00,000 under the old regime and ₹5,00,000 for those aged 80 and above. The new regime uses ₹4,00,000 for everyone regardless of age.

Banks deduct TDS on interest above ₹1,00,000 a year for senior citizens under section 194A. If your total income is below the taxable limit, file Form 15H at the branch at the start of the financial year. Doing it in March is too late. Tax figures here are for FY 2026-27, sourced from the Income Tax Department.

Frequently asked questions

Can a pensioner get a credit card in India?

Yes. Pension is accepted as income by most issuers. The difficulty is the published income floor, which is written for salaried applicants. If your pension does not clear it, apply for a card against a fixed deposit instead. That route does not test income at all, because your own deposit is the security.

What is the age limit for a credit card?

Issuers set their own upper age limits and they are not standardised. Some stop new unsecured cards in the late sixties or seventies. A secured card is usually available later, because the risk sits with your deposit. Ask the branch for the age cap in writing before you apply, since call centres often get this wrong.

Is a supplementary card on my son’s account a good idea?

It is fast and usually free. But the RBI Master Direction places the liability on the principal cardholder, so the debt is your son’s, not yours. It builds no credit history in your name. Take it for convenience. Do not take it if your aim is to build or hold a credit score.

Do senior citizens get lower credit card interest rates?

No. Card interest is priced on risk and behaviour, not age. Rates are high on every card in India, and they compound monthly. The only reliable way to pay nothing is to clear the full statement balance every cycle. Our credit card interest calculator shows what carrying a balance actually costs.

The bank says I must take insurance with the card. Is that legal?

No. Any insurance bundled with a card needs your explicit written or digital consent, along with nominee details, under paragraph 6(a)(iii) of the Master Direction. If a card is issued and billed without your consent, the issuer must reverse the charge and pay twice that amount as penalty. Refuse the bundle and ask for the card on its own.
