An NRI usually cannot get an ordinary Indian credit card on income. Indian issuers assess income earned in India, and most NRIs do not have it. The route that works is a card secured against a fixed deposit.
That is not a consolation prize. A deposit-backed card carries a real limit, builds an Indian credit record, and asks nothing of your salary slip abroad. The card we hold verified data on in this category is the SBI Card Unnati, which has no joining or annual fee and no stated income requirement.
How does an NRI actually get an Indian credit card?
| Route | How the limit is set | Repayment account | What to watch | As of |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Card against an NRE fixed deposit | A percentage of the deposit, set by the bank | NRE or NRO savings account | Breaking the deposit early usually cancels the card | 15 Aug 2026 |
| Card against an NRO fixed deposit | A percentage of the deposit, set by the bank | NRO savings account | NRO interest is taxed in India and subject to TDS | 15 Aug 2026 |
| Add-on card on a resident relative’s account | Shares the primary holder’s limit | Primary holder’s account | The primary holder is liable for everything you spend | 15 Aug 2026 |
| Unsecured card on Indian income | Standard underwriting | NRO account | Realistic only with rent or business income declared in India | 15 Aug 2026 |

What is the difference between an NRE-backed and an NRO-backed card?
The difference is repatriation and tax, not the card. Money in an NRE account is foreign earnings brought into India. It is freely repatriable and the interest is not taxed in India.
An NRO account holds income earned in India, such as rent, dividends or a pension. Interest on it is taxable and tax is deducted at source. Repatriation out of an NRO account is subject to limits and paperwork.
So the practical rule is simple. Fund the deposit from NRE money if you may want it back abroad. Use NRO money if the spending is on Indian obligations anyway. Current deposit rates are on our NRE and NRO FD rates page.
What does an NRI card cost that a resident card does not?
Two things. The first is the deposit itself. Money locked in a fixed deposit earns FD interest, not equity returns, and you cannot touch it while the card is live.
The second is currency. Spending abroad on an Indian rupee card attracts a foreign currency markup, typically 3.5% on mainstream cards. Add 18% GST on that markup. Two of the cards we track charge 2%, and one charges nothing at all.
There is also tax collected at source on certain outward remittances under the Liberalised Remittance Scheme. The rate and threshold change with each Finance Act, so check them for the current year rather than trusting an old article. Our TCS on remittance calculator shows the mechanism.
Should an NRI use an Indian card or a foreign one?
For spending in India, the Indian card wins on cost. There is no cross-border markup and no conversion spread on every transaction.
For spending abroad, use the card issued where you live. Paying in dollars or dirhams on an Indian rupee card means paying a markup for no benefit.
For sending money home, neither card is the tool. Compare a proper transfer service instead. See our page on remittance services.
Why bother with an Indian card at all?
One reason: the credit record. If you intend to buy property in India or take an NRI home loan, an Indian bureau file with two years of clean repayment helps.
Without any Indian credit history, a lender has nothing to price you off. That usually means a higher spread or a larger deposit. A small secured card, used and repaid, fixes that quietly over time.
If you are building a file from zero, the same logic applies to residents. Our guide to first credit cards covers it.
Common questions
Can an NRI get a credit card in India without an income proof?
Yes, through a card secured against a fixed deposit held with the issuing bank. The deposit replaces the income assessment. The limit is a share of the deposit, decided by the bank. You keep earning FD interest on the money while the card is open.
Can I repay an Indian credit card from an NRE account?
Yes, banks generally allow repayment from either an NRE or an NRO account. Repaying from NRE money uses funds that were repatriable, so think about whether you will want that money abroad later. Repaying from NRO uses income already earned in India, which is usually the tidier option.
Does an NRI credit card affect my Indian credit score?
Yes. Cards issued in India report to Indian credit bureaus regardless of where you live. That is the main long-term reason to hold one. A missed payment damages the record just as it would for a resident, so set up autopay from the linked account.
What happens to my credit card when I become an NRI?
Tell your bank. Your resident savings account must be converted to an NRO account once your status changes, and the card usually has to be relinked or reissued. Leaving a resident account open after you become an NRI is a compliance problem, not a shortcut.
Which is cheaper for foreign spending, an Indian card or cash?
Neither by default. Compare the card’s markup, currently 3.5% on most Indian cards plus GST, against the spread a money changer quotes. A card that charges 2% or less beats most cash conversion. A card at 3.5% often does not.
