Pet insurance in India is a thin market with small covers. We read one policy end to end: the Bajaj Allianz Pet Dog Insurance Policy wording filed with IRDAI. Its surgery cover is capped at ₹50,000. Hospitalisation pays ₹2,500 a day, up to ₹10,000 in a policy year. A 10% co-pay applies on every claim.
Those are the real numbers. Set them against a single orthopaedic surgery at a city veterinary hospital and you can see the problem. For many owners the honest answer is to save the premium in a separate account instead. That is not a comfortable thing for a finance site to say. It is still true.
We are not ranking pet insurers, and here is why
A ranking needs comparable data. For pet cover in India, it does not exist yet.
IRDAI publishes claim settlement ratios for life and health insurers. It does not publish a pet-specific settlement ratio. Pet policies sit inside a general insurer’s miscellaneous book, so there is no line to compare. Our claim ratio page explains what those published ratios do and do not measure.
So we have ranked the routes open to you instead, and shown in detail what one filed policy actually pays. If another page shows you a leaderboard of pet insurers with settlement percentages, ask where the numbers came from.
What does a pet insurance policy in India actually cover?
The table below is taken directly from the Bajaj Allianz Pet Dog Insurance Policy wording filed with IRDAI. Limits differ by insurer and by plan, so treat this as the shape of the market, not a quote.
| Section | What it pays | Your share |
|---|---|---|
| Surgery expenses | Up to ₹50,000. Includes 7 days of pre-surgery and 15 days of post-surgery costs, inside the same limit | 10% co-pay on every claim |
| Hospitalisation | ₹2,500 per day, capped at ₹10,000 per policy year | 10% co-pay on every claim |
| Mortality benefit | Sum insured on death, plus ₹3,000 towards cremation or burial | — |
| Terminal diseases | Lump sum of ₹30,000 on diagnosis, if the dog survives 30 days. Once in the dog’s lifetime | — |
| Long term care | Lump sum of ₹25,000 for eight named conditions. Once in the dog’s lifetime | — |
| OPD cover | Up to ₹30,000, for ten named illnesses only | 10% deductible, minimum ₹1,000 per claim |
| Third party liability | Sum insured shown for that section, plus legal costs | Liability must be established by a court or tribunal |
| Theft, loss or straying | Lump sum after 45 days with no trace, plus up to ₹1,000 advertising and ₹5,000 reward | Police diary entry and proof of search needed |

What are the waiting periods?
Three rules, straight from the wording.
- Illness claims under the surgery, mortality, terminal disease, long-term care and OPD sections are not payable in the first 30 days.
- Theft, loss or straying claims are not payable in the first 90 days.
- Accident claims and third party liability claims have no waiting period at all.
- On continuous renewal, no waiting period applies again.
That last line is the one to act on. Cover bought after your dog falls ill is worthless for that illness. Anything contracted before the policy started is excluded outright.
What ages can be insured?
Age is the hardest limit in this market, and it is stricter than most owners expect.
Entry age under the policy we read runs from 3 months. It closes at 4 years for giant breeds and 7 years for small, medium and large breeds. Exit age is 10 years for small, medium and large breeds, and 6 years for giant breeds.
Read that again if you own a Great Dane or a Saint Bernard. You cannot start a policy after your dog turns four. And cover ends at six, which is well before the years when vet bills climb.
Several sections also switch off with age even inside the term. Mortality, long term care, OPD and theft cover drop away for giant breeds over 4 and other breeds over 7. That happens unless you have renewed without a break.
What will a pet policy not pay for?
The exclusions decide most claims. These are all in the filed wording.
- Anything contracted or any accident occurring before the policy began.
- Diseases the dog was not vaccinated against, where a vaccine exists.
- Working dogs and volunteer dogs, including guarding, farming, racing and security work.
- Breeding, pregnancy and birth, and routine spaying or castration.
- Skin treatments and dental work, under the hospitalisation section, unless the dental work follows an injury.
- Vaccination and micro-chipping costs, and alternative or experimental treatment.
- Any breed classed as dangerous by a state or central authority.
- Treatment outside India.
Note the vaccination clause carefully. Skip a booster and you can lose a parvovirus or distemper claim. Keep the record card. It is the cheapest claim protection you have.
Is pet insurance worth it, or should you self-insure?
Work it out as a sum, not a feeling. Three routes are open to you.
| # | Item | Details |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Buy the full policy. | Best where the dog is young, a giant or large breed with known hereditary risk, and the ₹50,000 surgery cap would genuinely change what you could afford. |
| 2 | Buy liability cover only, if offered separately. | The third party section has no waiting period and no age-based cut-off in the wording we read. A dog bite claim is the one loss that can run far beyond any vet bill. |
| 3 | Self-insure. | Put the premium into a separate savings account every month and do not touch it. After a few years you hold a fund with no exclusions, no co-pay, no age limit and no claim form. |
Route three suits more Indian owners than the industry would like to admit. The caps are low, the co-pay is on every claim, and the age windows are tight. Our emergency fund calculator is a reasonable way to size that pot.
Route one still wins in one case. Say a ₹60,000 vet bill would otherwise go on a credit card. Then insurance is doing its real job. It stops a bad month becoming debt.
Frequently asked questions
How much does pet insurance cost in India?
Premiums vary by breed, age, city, sum insured and the sections you select. We are not quoting a figure, because no insurer publishes a rate table we could verify. Get quotes from two or three insurers for your own dog’s breed and age, and compare the caps and co-pay, not the premium alone.
Does pet insurance cover cats in India?
Some insurers offer cat cover, but the policy we read is written for dogs only. Cover for cats and other pets is thinner still. Ask the insurer for the filed wording, not the brochure, before you buy.
Are pre-existing conditions covered?
No. The filed wording excludes accidents occurring and diseases contracted before the risk started. That exclusion stops applying only on policies renewed in continuity.
Does pet insurance cover dog bite claims against me?
The third party liability section does, where a court or tribunal establishes your liability. It carries no waiting period. It will not pay if the injured person lives in your home or is paid to look after or train the dog.
Can I insure a 9-year-old dog?
Not under the policy we read. Entry closes at 7 years for small, medium and large breeds, and at 4 years for giant breeds. That is the single biggest gap in the Indian market today.
