Best Flexi Cap Funds

Why we publish the flexi cap universe rather than a ranking, what the category is allowed to do, and how to pick one properly.

We are not going to publish a ranked list of the best flexi cap funds. The reason matters more than a ranking would. We hold AMFI’s scheme and net asset value data. We do not hold audited returns, assets under management or expense ratios. Ranking funds without those numbers means inventing them.

Here is what we can give you instead, and it is more useful. The full flexi cap universe as of the AMFI file dated 31 August 2026. What the category is legally allowed to do. And the three things that actually decide which one you should hold.

What is a flexi cap fund?

An open-ended equity scheme with one rule. It must hold at least 65% of total assets in equity and equity-related instruments. There is no constraint on where across the market it invests. That definition comes from SEBI’s categorisation framework.

The market segments are defined by rank. SEBI’s Master Circular for Mutual Funds, dated 27 June 2024, sets them out. Large cap is the 1st to 100th company by full market capitalisation. Mid cap is the 101st to 250th. Small cap is the 251st onwards.

A flexi cap manager can put the money anywhere across those three. That freedom is the product.

Flexi cap or multi cap: which should I pick?

This is the comparison that matters, and most readers arrive without knowing the two are different.

A multi cap fund is required to hold a minimum of 25% each in large, mid and small cap stocks. So at least 50% of a multi cap fund sits outside large caps at all times, by rule.

A flexi cap fund has no such floor. It can sit almost entirely in large caps in a nervous market. It can rotate into small caps when the manager wants to.

So the two are not interchangeable. A multi cap fund is structurally more volatile and structurally more exposed to smaller companies. A flexi cap fund is a bet on the manager’s allocation calls. Pick multi cap if you want the mid and small cap exposure guaranteed. Pick flexi cap if you would rather someone decide it for you.

The argument against holding one at all

Say the uncomfortable thing. The whole promise of the category is timing. A manager will shift between large, mid and small caps better than the market can. Sometimes one does. Charging for that promise every year is the certain part. Delivering it is not.

The alternative is a broad market index fund at a fraction of the cost. Add a deliberate small cap allocation of your own if you want one. That is a portfolio you can explain. Its cost is knowable in advance.

If you do want a flexi cap fund, hold one. Not four. Four flexi cap funds from four fund houses is one diversified portfolio with four expense ratios attached. Our index funds and best mutual funds pages cover the alternatives.

Every flexi cap scheme with a direct growth option in AMFI’s published file. Direct plans only. A regular plan carries a distributor commission that compounds against you for as long as you hold it. Our direct versus regular plans page shows what that costs.

Read that table as a starting list, not a shortlist. Net asset value tells you nothing about quality. A fund with a NAV of ₹2,299 is not better or worse than one at ₹10.19. It is older, or it has been running longer since a split. Nothing else.

How to actually narrow it down

Three filters, in this order. None of them is last year’s return.

First, cost. Compare the total expense ratio of the direct plan. The fund house publishes it on its own site and in the scheme factsheet. Over twenty years, half a percentage point a year is a large number.

Second, consistency of process. Read the scheme information document. Check whether the fund actually uses the freedom its category allows. Some have behaved like a large cap fund for five years while charging for flexibility.

Third, the manager and the mandate together. A flexi cap fund is a discretionary product. A change of manager is a change of product, and it is not announced as one.

Screen the universe by category on our mutual fund screener. Then check what a holding period does to your tax on mutual fund taxation.

What it costs you in tax

A flexi cap fund is an equity scheme for tax, because it holds at least 65% in equity. Gains become long term after 12 months. On the position we track as of 17 August 2026, long-term gains are taxed at 12.5% above ₹1,25,000 a year. Short-term gains are taxed at 20%.

That ₹1,25,000 exemption is per person, per year. It does not carry forward. If you are sitting on unrealised gains and have not used it, decide before 31 March rather than after.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a flexi cap and a multi cap fund?

A multi cap fund must hold at least 25% each in large, mid and small cap stocks. A flexi cap fund has one floor only. It must hold 65% in equity overall, with free rein across segments. Multi cap guarantees exposure to smaller companies. Flexi cap leaves that to the manager.

How many flexi cap funds should I hold?

One is usually enough. The category already invests across the whole market. A second fund adds overlapping holdings and a second expense ratio, not diversification. Want more small cap exposure? Add a dedicated small cap fund instead.

Is a flexi cap fund good for a SIP?

It suits a long systematic investment plan well. Equity volatility is what averaging is for. The condition is the holding period. Below five years, an equity fund of any kind is the wrong instrument. The tax rules assume you will stay put.

Why does this page not rank the funds?

Because we do not hold audited return, expense ratio or assets under management data for these schemes. A ranking without them would be invented. We publish the AMFI universe and the criteria instead. When a page shows you a ranked table, ask what it was computed from.

Should I pick the fund with the lowest NAV?

No. Net asset value is the price of one unit and carries no information about future returns. A ₹10 NAV buys more units than a ₹2,000 NAV; the value of your holding is identical either way. Compare expense ratios and mandates, not unit prices.
