IBJA fixes twice a trading day. The morning fix sets the rate most shops open on and the afternoon fix is what the day closes at, so a piece quoted late can differ from one quoted at eleven.

Where to buy gold in Chandigarh

The gold trade in Chandigarh sits in Sector 22 and Sector 17. A planned-city market rather than a historic bazaar; serves Punjab, Haryana and Himachal buyers.

The north still quotes in tolas as often as in grams, and a tola is 11.66 grams, not ten. A rate that looks high against the per-10-gram fix is usually a tola rate. Bridal sets dominate demand, and their making charges are among the highest on any gold purchase.

RouteSmallest purchaseCost on the way inCost on the way out
Jewellery from a BIS-registered jeweller
Metal plus workmanship, hallmarked with a six-digit HUID
One piece3% GST on the total, plus a making charge of roughly 8-25% of the metal value depending on the designThe making charge is not recoverable; buy-back is on metal value at the day's fix, less a deduction for purity
Coins and bars
999 or 995 fine metal, hallmarked
0.5 gram3% GST, plus a dealer premium over the fix that widens as the piece gets smallerBullion dealers buy back near the fix; jewellers usually only exchange against a new purchase
Exchange-traded fund
Units backed by vaulted metal of 995 fineness or better, held in a demat account
One unitBrokerage, plus the fund's expense ratio charged daily against the NAVSold on the exchange at the market price; the bid-offer spread widens when volumes are thin
Fund of funds
Units of a scheme that holds the exchange-traded fund
A monthly SIP, typically from ₹100No demat account needed; two layers of expense ratio, the fund's own and the underlying ETF'sRedeemed at NAV; some schemes apply an exit load inside the first year
Digital gold
An allocation held in a private vault by the seller, not by a regulator
₹13% GST, plus a spread between the buy and sell price quoted at the same momentSold back to the same platform at its quoted rate, or taken as physical delivery against a minting and delivery charge
Sovereign Gold Bond, on the exchange
An RBI-issued bond tracking the price of 999 gold, paying 2.5% a year on the issue price
One unit, equal to one gramBrokerage only, with no GST; the last primary issue was the 2023-24 Series IV in February 2024, so units are bought from other holdersSold on NSE or BSE where volumes allow, or redeemed by the RBI at maturity

Owning gold without taking delivery of it

Every route below tracks the same metal. What separates them is cost and what happens when you sell: an exchange-traded fund charges an expense ratio and sells back at the market price, while jewellery charges a making charge that is gone the moment you leave the shop.

Hallmarking centres in Chandigarh

Chandigarh has 5 operative BIS-recognised assaying and hallmarking centres, which places it 36th of the fifty cities on this site. Workable, but not deep. A jeweller here is more likely to send pieces out for hallmarking in batches than to have it done the same day. Hallmarking is compulsory on gold jewellery, and the mark carries a six-digit HUID that can be checked against the BIS register before money changes hands. Every centre below is named in that register.

Silver in Chandigarh

Gold-to-silver ratio
67.6grams of silver buy one gram of gold

Both legs are the IBJA fix for the same session, so the ratio moves only when one metal moves against the other.

Common questions

What is the 24 carat gold rate in Chandigarh today?

Gold of 999 fineness is ₹14,943 a gram, or ₹1,49,430 per 10 grams, on the IBJA fix of 9 Oct 2026. That figure excludes 3% GST.

What is the 22 carat gold rate in Chandigarh today?

Gold of 916 fineness is ₹13,688 a gram, or ₹1,36,878 per 10 grams. It is 91.6% gold, which is why it is 8.4% below the 24 carat rate.

What does one tola of gold cost in Chandigarh?

A tola is 11.66 grams, so 24 carat gold works out at ₹1,74,292 and 22 carat at ₹1,59,652, before GST.

Why does the gold rate in Chandigarh differ from the price a jeweller quotes?

The fix is the metal alone. A bill adds 3% GST and a making charge, which on jewellery commonly runs between 8% and 25% of the metal value depending on the design, and is not recovered when the piece is sold back.

Does the gold rate change by city?

IBJA fixes one rate for India and it is the rate lenders and jewellers price against. What changes locally is the making charge, the dealer premium on small pieces and how much competition there is: Chandigarh has 5 BIS-recognised assaying and hallmarking centres.

Has gold gone up or down over the last year?

Gold is up 17.7% over twelve months, and up 208.5% over five years, measured in rupees.
