Gold rate today by purity

The IBJA fix is the rate an Indian jeweller prices against and the rate a lender values gold at. It is the metal alone: 3% GST and the making charge land on top of it before anything reaches a bill.

Why published gold rates disagree

On the morning of 9 September 2026, eight sites ranking for gold in Mumbai quoted 24-carat gold at figures between ₹14,970 and ₹15,924 a gram — a spread of over 6% on the same metal on the same day. None of them was lying. They were quoting different things: a spot conversion, a jeweller’s own board rate, an association rate carrying a local premium, and in some cases a figure that had not been refreshed since the previous session.

There is one number that is not a matter of opinion, and it is the IBJA fix. It is what banks use to value gold pledged against a loan, what customs uses for tariff valuation, and what a jeweller’s board is set from. Every figure on this page is that fix, dated, with the session it came from.

Gold rate by city

The metal price is national. What changes between cities is the making charge, the dealer premium on small pieces, and how much competition there is — which the count of BIS-recognised hallmarking centres measures directly.

The routes into gold, compared on cost

The cost that decides the outcome is almost never the rate. It is the making charge on jewellery, the spread on digital gold and the expense ratio on a fund.

RouteSmallest purchaseCost on the way inCost on the way out
Jewellery from a BIS-registered jeweller
Metal plus workmanship, hallmarked with a six-digit HUID
One piece3% GST on the total, plus a making charge of roughly 8-25% of the metal value depending on the designThe making charge is not recoverable; buy-back is on metal value at the day's fix, less a deduction for purity
Coins and bars
999 or 995 fine metal, hallmarked
0.5 gram3% GST, plus a dealer premium over the fix that widens as the piece gets smallerBullion dealers buy back near the fix; jewellers usually only exchange against a new purchase
Exchange-traded fund
Units backed by vaulted metal of 995 fineness or better, held in a demat account
One unitBrokerage, plus the fund's expense ratio charged daily against the NAVSold on the exchange at the market price; the bid-offer spread widens when volumes are thin
Fund of funds
Units of a scheme that holds the exchange-traded fund
A monthly SIP, typically from ₹100No demat account needed; two layers of expense ratio, the fund's own and the underlying ETF'sRedeemed at NAV; some schemes apply an exit load inside the first year
Digital gold
An allocation held in a private vault by the seller, not by a regulator
₹13% GST, plus a spread between the buy and sell price quoted at the same momentSold back to the same platform at its quoted rate, or taken as physical delivery against a minting and delivery charge
Sovereign Gold Bond, on the exchange
An RBI-issued bond tracking the price of 999 gold, paying 2.5% a year on the issue price
One unit, equal to one gramBrokerage only, with no GST; the last primary issue was the 2023-24 Series IV in February 2024, so units are bought from other holdersSold on NSE or BSE where volumes allow, or redeemed by the RBI at maturity

Gold-to-silver ratio
67.6grams of silver buy one gram of gold

Both legs are the IBJA fix for the same session, so the ratio moves only when one metal moves against the other.

Common questions

What is the 24 carat gold rate in India today?

Gold of 999 fineness is ₹14,943 a gram, or ₹1,49,430 per 10 grams, on the IBJA fix of 9 Oct 2026. That figure excludes 3% GST.

What is the 22 carat gold rate in India today?

Gold of 916 fineness is ₹13,688 a gram, or ₹1,36,878 per 10 grams. It is 91.6% gold, which is why it is 8.4% below the 24 carat rate.

What does one tola of gold cost in India?

A tola is 11.66 grams, so 24 carat gold works out at ₹1,74,292 and 22 carat at ₹1,59,652, before GST.

Why does the gold rate in India differ from the price a jeweller quotes?

The fix is the metal alone. A bill adds 3% GST and a making charge, which on jewellery commonly runs between 8% and 25% of the metal value depending on the design, and is not recovered when the piece is sold back.

Does the gold rate change by city?

IBJA fixes one rate for India and it is the rate lenders and jewellers price against. What changes locally is the making charge, the dealer premium on small pieces and how much competition there is: India has 0 BIS-recognised assaying and hallmarking centres.

Has gold gone up or down over the last year?

Gold is up 17.7% over twelve months, and up 208.5% over five years, measured in rupees.
