The SBI BPCL Octane is a single-purpose card. It pays 25 reward points per ₹100 at BPCL outlets — about 7.25% value back on fuel — and ordinary rates on everything else. Whether it is worth ₹1,499 a year comes down to one question: is a BPCL pump on your route?

Our verdict

If you spend ₹8,000 a month on fuel and a BPCL pump is convenient, this returns roughly ₹7,000 a year against a ₹1,499 fee. If BPCL is not convenient, none of that applies.

The 730+ score the issuer looks for is not a formality either — a fuel card is an easy application to lose on a thin file, and the levers that move a score are set out in our guide to how to improve your credit score.

What works, what does not

What works

  • Highest fuel return available on any Indian credit card

  • Bonus points cover most of the first-year fee

What does not

  • Value is tied to BPCL specifically, not all fuel stations
  • Monthly cap on accelerated fuel points
  • Ordinary returns on non-fuel spending

The 18% GST on the annual fee is the number most comparisons quietly omit. Factor it in before deciding whether the rewards clear the bar, and put your own spending through the credit card reward value calculator rather than trusting an advertised headline rate.

Compare with

If fuel is not the bulk of your spending, a general rewards card will beat this one. The Axis Bank Atlas Credit Card scores 3.6/5 on a ₹5,000 fee, and the HDFC Bank Infinia Credit Card scores 2.8/5 on a ₹12,500 fee. The wider set sits under credit cards.

Effective reward rate is our own blended estimate for a typical spend mix — not the accelerated rate an issuer advertises on one category. Annual fees are shown before the 18% GST that is charged on top. Verify current terms on the issuer’s site before applying; card terms change without notice.
