How the AED to INR rate is set

Financial Benchmarks India Ltd (FBIL) has published a rupee reference rate for the dirham since 5 January 2026. FBIL derives that figure by crossing the fixed USD/AED rate with its own USD/INR reference rate.

Because the UAE pegs the dirham at AED 3.6725 to the US dollar, the dirham moves with the dollar against the rupee. Divide the dollar rate by 3.6725 and you get the dirham rate: ₹95.9433 ÷ 3.6725 gives about ₹26.12, matching the published figure. Credsir’s USD to INR rate today page therefore doubles as a quick dirham check.

Anything that moves the dollar against the rupee moves the dirham too, including RBI policy, foreign investment flows and oil prices.

Getting a good AED to INR rate

No bank, exchange house or app gives you the reference rate. The gap between its rate and the reference rate, plus any fee, is what the conversion costs you.

  1. Note the latest RBI reference rate for AED, with its date.
  2. Ask each provider how many rupees you receive for your exact dirham amount, after all fees.
  3. Divide the rupees by the dirhams to get the effective rate.
  4. Compare it with the reference rate. An effective rate of ₹25.80 against ₹26.12 is about 1.2% below it.
  5. Pick the provider with the smallest gap, and check that it is licensed. In the UAE, only banks and exchange houses licensed by the Central Bank of the UAE may change money or send it abroad.

The forex markup calculator turns any quote into a percentage. If you send money home regularly, see sending money to India for the channels and what they cost.

Buying dirhams in India

Indian residents buy foreign exchange from RBI-authorised banks and full-fledged money changers. For a trip to the UAE you can carry notes worth up to USD 3,000 per visit, about AED 11,017; the rest must go on a forex card or similar. You can pay cash only if the bill is below ₹50,000. The UAE requires travellers aged 18 or over to declare cash above AED 60,000. Our guide to currency exchange in Dubai covers both ends of the trip.
