A virtual trading app in India lets you place practice trades with pretend money, so you can learn order types and test a strategy without losing cash. Free paper trading is still available, but SEBI rules since 2024 limit which platforms can legally use live stock prices, so check who runs the app before you sign up.

Key facts

Live prices to third parties Not allowed unless needed for orderly functioning of the market or a regulatory requirement
Price data for learning May be shared for investor education with a lag of 1 day and no monetary incentive

What SEBI’s rules mean for free paper trading apps

SEBI noticed that some gaming platforms and apps were running virtual trading and fantasy games on live share prices, and a few paid prizes for portfolio performance. Its May 2024 circular told stock exchanges, clearing corporations, depositories and registered intermediaries to stop sharing real-time price data with such third parties. The rule applied from the 30th day after issue.

Two exceptions matter to learners. Price data can still be shared where the market needs it to function, under a written agreement. It can also be shared for investor education and awareness with a lag of one day, provided no prize or money is offered.

In November 2024 SEBI went further and warned the public directly. It said apps offering virtual trading, paper trading or fantasy games based on listed-company prices violate the Securities Contracts (Regulation) Act, 1956 and the SEBI Act, 1992. If you use such a platform, you get no protection through SEBI’s SCORES system, exchange grievance cells or the SMART ODR portal.

Practical effect for you

  • Standalone “stock market game” apps that are not linked to a SEBI-registered broker may show delayed prices, may change their features, or may shut down.
  • Apps offering cash prizes or paid leagues on share price movements are the kind SEBI warned against.
  • Broker-run tools and education platforms that follow the circular are the safer places to practise.

Types of demo trading platforms you will find

Type Examples What to check
Broker-linked strategy tools Streak (Zerodha) lets users deploy a strategy virtually; no actual orders are placed Whether it is free for your broker account and which data it uses
Options analytics platforms Sensibull offers draft portfolios to create, record and track trades Which features are free and which need a plan
Global charting sites TradingView’s Paper Trading, available to all users with no fees, per its help centre Whether Indian exchange data is live or delayed on your plan
Standalone simulator apps Various Play Store and App Store apps Operator name, SEBI registration of any linked broker, prizes offered
Offshore forex and CFD demos MT4/MT5 demos from overseas brokers RBI Alert List status; live trading with them is not permitted for residents

Credsir does not rank these platforms. Features and pricing change often, so confirm them on the provider’s own site before you rely on them.

How to start paper trading safely

  1. Decide what you want to practise: equity delivery, intraday, or futures and options.
  2. Check who runs the platform. If it is tied to a broker, look up the broker on SEBI’s list of registered intermediaries.
  3. Avoid any app that asks for a deposit, offers prize money, or promises returns.
  4. Do not share your trading account password, OTP or broker API keys with a simulator.
  5. Note whether prices are live or delayed. A one-day lag is fine for learning but will not show intraday moves.
  6. Write down a plan for each trade: entry, stop-loss, target and position size.
  7. Keep a trade journal and review it weekly.
  8. Move to real money only with an amount you can afford to lose, through a SEBI-registered broker.

Paper trading vs live trading

Area Paper trading Live trading
Money at risk None Your capital
Account needed Usually just a sign-up on the platform Demat and trading account with a SEBI-registered broker, with KYC
Fills Assumed at the simulated price Depend on the order book; slippage can occur
Costs Usually none Brokerage, STT, exchange charges, GST and stamp duty
Investor protection None on unauthorised platforms SCORES, exchange grievance cells and SMART ODR

Paper results usually look better than live results because you feel no fear or greed and every order fills. Treat a good practice record as a starting point, not proof that a strategy works.

Forex demo accounts and the XM question

Searches for “XM algo trading” and “XM broker API for automated trading” show interest in offshore forex demos. RBI’s Alert List, last updated on 19 November 2025, names XM, eToro, MetaTrader 4 and MetaTrader 5 among 95 entities that are not authorised to deal in forex or run forex trading platforms for Indian residents. A demo account costs nothing, but moving to a live account on such a platform can attract penalties under FEMA. Our guide on whether forex trading is legal in India explains the permitted route through Indian exchanges.

Frequently asked questions

Is paper trading free in India?

Many simulators are free, including TradingView’s Paper Trading and Zerodha’s Streak virtual deployment for Zerodha users. Some platforms charge for extra data or tools.

Which is the best virtual trading app in India?

Credsir does not rank apps. Pick one run by or linked to a SEBI-registered broker, with no prize money, and check whether its prices are live or delayed.

SEBI said in November 2024 that unauthorised platforms offering virtual or paper trading on listed-company prices break securities law, and their users get no investor protection. Simulators run by or linked to registered intermediaries under the May 2024 data rules are the safer choice.

Can I open a demo trading account in India without a demat account?

Yes. Most simulators need only a sign-up. You need a demat and trading account with KYC only when you trade with real money.

Can I paper trade options in India?

Yes. Options tools such as Sensibull offer draft portfolios to record and track trades, and strategy tools like Streak let you test option strategies without placing orders.

Why do some demo stock market apps show old prices?

SEBI’s May 2024 circular allows price data for investor education only with a one-day lag, unless a platform has an agreement that meets the circular’s conditions.

Is an XM demo account allowed in India?

XM is on RBI’s Alert List of unauthorised forex platforms. Residents cannot legally trade forex with it, so practising there does not lead to a lawful live account.
