On 16 September 2026, 1 Canadian dollar was worth about ₹68.79. SBI’s rate card that morning bought Canadian dollar transfers at ₹68.05 and sold notes at ₹72.45.

These are fixed daily figures, not a live quote. The Canadian dollar trades all day, so the rate you get will differ. For the currencies the RBI does publish, including the US dollar, euro and pound, see our exchange rates today page, which is updated separately.

How the CAD to INR rate is worked out

The RBI’s daily list, compiled by Financial Benchmarks India (FBIL), covers the US dollar, pound, euro, yen, UAE dirham and Indonesian rupiah. The Canadian dollar is not on it. Banks and converter sites therefore arrive at a rupee rate through the US dollar, which trades against both currencies.

Two official figures give a cross rate you can check yourself:

  1. Take the RBI reference rate for 1 US dollar (₹95.9433 on 16 September 2026, set at 1 pm).
  2. Take the Bank of Canada’s rate for 1 US dollar in Canadian dollars (1.3947 on the same day).
  3. Divide the first by the second: 95.9433 ÷ 1.3947 = ₹68.79 per Canadian dollar.

The Bank of Canada also publishes a direct rupee rate, but only to five decimal places (CAD 0.01454 per rupee), so it gives ₹68.78. The small gap comes from rounding and from the two banks setting their rates at different times of day.

1 CAD in Indian rupees: conversion table

The table uses the derived rate of ₹68.7914 for 16 September 2026. A bank, card or transfer service applies its own rate, so treat these as mid-points, not the price you get.

CAD to INR rate in June 2026 and since

Paying for study in Canada in rupees

Many Indian families follow this rate because of study costs. For study permit applications made on or after 1 September 2026, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) asks a single student outside Quebec to show CAD 23,448 a year for living costs, on top of tuition and travel. For applications from 1 January 2025 to 31 August 2026, the figure was CAD 22,895. Quebec sets its own requirement.

  • At the 16 September reference rate, CAD 23,448 is about ₹16.13 lakh.
  • Sent by wire at SBI’s transfer selling rate of ₹69.66, the same sum costs about ₹16.33 lakh, before bank charges.
  • A resident can remit up to USD 2,50,000 a financial year under the Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS), and must give a PAN.
  • From 1 April 2026, tax collected at source (TCS) on education remittances is nil up to ₹10 lakh a year and 2% above that. Remittances paid out of an education loan from a financial institution carry no TCS.

Why the rate you get differs

Nobody sells Canadian dollars to a customer at the reference rate. SBI’s spread on notes on 16 September was ₹7.65, from ₹64.80 to ₹72.45, against ₹1.61 on a transfer. Cash is the costliest way to carry the currency: CAD 1,000 in notes at SBI’s selling rate costs ₹72,450, against ₹68,791 at the reference rate.

The same applies in reverse. Money sent to India from Canada is converted at the receiving side’s buying rate, which was ₹68.05 at SBI for a transfer. Our guide to sending money to India explains how transfer fees and rates add up. For the euro, see our EUR to INR rate today page.

Buying Canadian dollars in India

  1. Choose an authorised dealer bank or an RBI-licensed full-fledged money changer.
  2. Compare its rate for notes, forex card or wire transfer against the day’s reference rate.
  3. Give your PAN, which is mandatory for LRS transactions.
  4. Pay in cash only if the total is below ₹50,000. Above that, pay by cheque, draft, pay order or card.
  5. Keep notes within USD 3,000 or its equivalent per trip for most countries, and load the rest on a card.

After you return, you may keep foreign currency worth up to USD 2,000. Notes above that must be sold to an authorised person within 180 days.
