Udyam (MSME) Registration: Free, Online and Permanent

Udyam registration costs nothing, needs only Aadhaar, never expires — and unlocks priority sector lending, 25% of government procurement and CGTMSE cover.

Udyam registration is free. The government portal says so in plain words: “Registration Process is totally free. No Costs or Fees are to be paid to anyone.” If someone quotes you a fee, they are selling you something the state gives away.

There is one official site, udyamregistration.gov.in. The portal warns that no other private or offline agency is authorised to do it. Its own banner reads “Beware of Fake Sites”.

What are the MSME limits in 2026?

The limits were raised with effect from 1 April 2025. The notification is S.O. 1364(E) dated 21 March 2025, from the Ministry of MSME. It amends the 2020 classification order.

Classification is composite. Both tests must be met. Breach either one and you move up a category.

Category Investment in plant, machinery or equipment Annual turnover Statutory source
Micro Up to ₹2.5 crore Up to ₹10 crore S.O. 1364(E), 21 Mar 2025
Small Up to ₹25 crore Up to ₹100 crore S.O. 1364(E), 21 Mar 2025
Medium Up to ₹125 crore Up to ₹500 crore S.O. 1364(E), 21 Mar 2025

Exports are excluded from turnover. That matters for exporters near a ceiling.

What documents do you need for Udyam registration?

None, in the sense of uploads. The portal is blunt: the process is “fully online, paperless and based on self-declaration” and “no documents or proof are required to be uploaded”.

Aadhaar is the identity key. The portal states that “only Adhaar Number will be enough for registration”. PAN and GSTIN are required as well, where GST applies to you, since 1 April 2021 under notification S.O. 1055(E) of 5 March 2021.

Your investment and turnover are then pulled automatically from PAN and GST databases. You do not declare them and you cannot inflate them.

Does Udyam registration expire?

No. The portal is blunt: “There will be no need for renewal of Registration.” The number you get is permanent. It then acts as the firm’s identity number.

Two limits apply. No firm may file more than one Udyam number. And a false claim is punishable under Section 27 of the MSMED Act, 2006. Old EM-II and UAM holders must re-register.

What does Udyam registration actually get you?

Four benefits are worth the ten minutes. None of them are automatic cash.

ItemDetails
Priority sector lending. The MSME Ministry’s own benefits note says a registered firm “becomes eligible for priority sector lending from Banks”. That does not win you a loan. It changes how a bank classifies one.
A quarter of government buying.Under the Public Procurement Policy for MSEs, every central ministry, department and PSU must set an annual goal. It is at least 25% of total purchases from micro and small firms. Four points of that 25% are reserved for SC or ST owners, and three points for women owners.
CGTMSE collateral-free cover. The credit guarantee scheme caps cover at ₹10 crore per borrower. For guarantees approved on or after 1 April 2025, cover runs at 85% for micro firms up to ₹5 lakh, 75% above that, and 90% for women entrepreneurs.
Delayed payment recourse. You get access to the MSME Samadhaan route. It is also what lets you sell receivables on a TReDS platform, since only MSMEs may sell there.

What if your business is informal and has no GST?

Use the Udyam Assist Platform. It is the route for informal micro firms, at udyamassist.gov.in.

Its certificate is not a lesser document for lending. Order S.O. 1296(E) of 20 March 2023 says a UAP certificate is “at par with Udyam Registration Certificate” for priority sector lending.

Scale tells you how much of India this covers. On 6 September 2026 the portal showed 5,31,83,248 Udyam records. It showed another 4,16,56,116 on the assist platform, all of them micro.

Where registration will not help you

It is not a credit score and it is not a subsidy. Banks still price on your books, your bureau record and your collateral. Improving your credit profile moves a lending decision more than a certificate does.

The tender advantage is also softer than it sounds. The ministry’s note mentions an “additional edge in Government Tenders” without quantifying fee or EMD concessions. Anyone quoting you an exact percentage there is guessing. Your GST registration is separate and still required on its own terms.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Udyam registration cost?

Nothing. The official portal states the process is free of cost and paperless. Consultants who charge for it are charging for form-filling, not for a government fee.

Can a trader register under Udyam?

Traders were brought in for the purpose of priority sector lending. The CGTMSE guarantee cap of ₹10 crore per borrower applies “irrespective of the unit activity including Trading”, per the scheme document.

Do I need GST to register?

Only if GST law applies to your enterprise. The requirement is tied to applicability under the CGST Act, not to every applicant. Aadhaar is what you cannot skip.

Can one person register two businesses?

One enterprise gets one registration. All activities of that enterprise are added into a single Udyam number. A genuinely separate legal entity registers separately.
