No card in our dataset is a dining card. That is the finding, not a gap. We hold 16 cards sorted into 13 categories, and dining is not one of them. Two of those cards pay real money on food spends: the HDFC Bank Millennia and the Axis Bank ACE. Most cards sold in India as dining cards sell a restaurant discount programme instead. A discount is not a return. It only pays if you were going to eat there anyway.
Why this page has no ranked list of dining credit cards
A ranking needs numbers we can stand behind. For dining that means the accelerated rate, the monthly cap, the merchant list and the fee. Issuers change all four without notice. We do not hold verified figures for the dedicated dining cards on the market, so we do not rank them. Inventing a leaderboard would be easy and worthless.
What we can rank is the route. There are four ways to earn on food spends in India. They pay very differently, and the gap between them is larger than the gap between any two cards.
Which route pays the most on food spends?
| Route | Card we hold | Headline benefit | Key condition | Who it suits | As of |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Food delivery accelerator | HDFC Bank Millennia | 5% cashback on partner merchants including Swiggy and Zomato | Annual fee ₹1,000, waived at ₹1,00,000 spend | Households who order in several times a week | 15 Aug 2026 |
| Food delivery accelerator | Axis Bank ACE | 4% cashback on Swiggy, Zomato and Ola | Annual fee ₹499, waived at ₹2,00,000 spend | Low spenders who want a cheap second card | 15 Aug 2026 |
| Flat online cashback | SBI Cashback Credit Card | 5% cashback on all online spends, no merchant list | Capped at ₹5,000 a statement cycle; 1% offline | Anyone who orders in and shops online | 15 Aug 2026 |
| Free card, low return | Amazon Pay ICICI | 1% back outside Amazon | No joining or annual fee | People unwilling to pay a fee at all | 15 Aug 2026 |
| Premium points card | HDFC Bank Infinia | Effective return of 3.3% across spends | Joining fee ₹12,500; waived at ₹10,00,000 spend | High spenders who already hold it | 15 Aug 2026 |

Why does a restaurant bill not always earn the dining rate?
This is the part nobody explains. Every card transaction carries a merchant category code, set by the merchant’s acquiring bank. Your issuer reads that code and decides what rate to pay. It does not read the restaurant’s name.
Three things go wrong. A restaurant inside a hotel often codes as a hotel, not a dining venue. A cloud kitchen billed through an aggregator codes as the aggregator. And a payment made through a third-party wallet or a payment gateway can code as a wallet load, which most issuers exclude entirely.
So a card advertising 10x points on dining can pay you the base rate on the same meal, depending on how the bill was routed. Test it with one small transaction before you rely on it. Read the exclusion list in the Most Important Terms and Conditions, which the RBI requires every issuer to publish separately at the acceptance stage under paragraph 6(a)(ii) of its Master Direction on credit and debit cards.
What does a bank dining programme actually save you?
Banks bundle third-party dining programmes with their cards. These offer a flat discount at partner restaurants, usually on the food bill only. Alcohol and taxes are normally excluded. There is often a minimum bill and a cap per visit.
The honest maths is simple. A discount is only a saving if you would have paid full price at that exact restaurant. If the programme steers you to a restaurant you would not otherwise choose, it has cost you money, not saved it. Treat it as a nudge, not a benefit.
Reward points have the same problem. A point is worth what you can redeem it for, and redemption value varies by several times across the same programme. Our page on reward point redemption covers how to work out your own rate.
What do these cards cost after GST?
Card fees carry 18% GST. Almost no comparison site adds it. Here is what you actually pay.

Fees are from the Credsir card dataset as of 5 September 2026. GST is applied by us at the statutory 18%. More on the full charge sheet is in our guide to credit card charges.
Which card should you actually pick for dining?
Work out your monthly food spend first. Then apply three tests.
- If most of it is delivery, the Millennia at 5% beats the ACE at 4%. The Millennia fee is higher but its waiver threshold is half.
- If your food spend is under about ₹5,000 a month, no fee card wins. Take a lifetime free card and stop optimising.
- If you eat out more than you order in, no card in our dataset is built for you. A flat cashback card will beat a dining card whose accelerator your restaurants keep failing to trigger.
The uncomfortable part: dining is a small line in most household budgets. A 4% edge on ₹6,000 a month is ₹240. That is smaller than the GST-inclusive fee on two of the four cards above. Chasing a dining card is rarely the highest-value thing you can do with a credit card application. Getting the category right matters more, and our guide on how to choose a credit card starts there.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a credit card that gives a discount at every restaurant?
No. Every dining benefit in India runs off either a merchant category code or a named partner list. Both are limited. A card that claims a flat discount everywhere is describing a programme with a partner network, and that network will not include most neighbourhood restaurants.
Do Swiggy and Zomato spends count as dining?
Not always. They usually code as the aggregator rather than the restaurant. Cards that name Swiggy and Zomato explicitly, such as the HDFC Bank Millennia and the Axis Bank ACE, will pay. A card that promises a generic dining accelerator may not.
Can a bank issue me a dining card I did not ask for?
No. Paragraph 6(a)(iv) of the RBI Master Direction on credit and debit cards prohibits unsolicited cards and upgrades outright. If one is activated without your consent, the issuer must reverse the charges and pay you twice the amount reversed.
Are reward points on dining taxed?
Cashback and reward points from personal card spending are generally treated as a discount, not income. That treatment can differ if the card is used for business expenses claimed against tax. Check with your accountant rather than a card marketing page.
Why do you not list the popular dedicated dining cards?
Because we could not verify their current rates, caps and merchant lists against issuer pages we opened. Listing a rate we cannot check is how comparison sites end up quoting an offer that ended eighteen months ago.
