Credit Card Comparisons

Head-to-head credit card comparisons with break-even spend, fees including GST and forex markup — and a clear winner in each pairing.

Pick the card that matches your largest spending category, not the one with the longest benefits list. On the 16 cards we track, the honest answer to “which card wins” changes with one input: where your money actually goes each month. For mostly-online spending, the SBI Cashback Credit Card wins outright. For international travel on a zero fee, the Scapia Federal Bank Credit Card wins. For everything else, the premium cards only win above a spend level most people never reach.

All figures below are from our card dataset, as of 15 August 2026, sourced from issuer rate cards. Annual fees in the dataset exclude GST. We have added the 18% GST here, because you pay it.

Which credit card is best for my spending pattern?

Start with the break-even spend. That is the annual spend at which the rewards you earn equal the fee you pay. Below it, the card costs you money.

Card Annual fee incl. 18% GST Effective reward rate Break-even annual spend Fee waiver spend
Axis Bank ACE ₹589 2.2% cashback ₹26,800 ₹2,00,000
SBI Cashback ₹1,179 4.2% cashback ₹28,100 ₹2,00,000
HDFC Bank Millennia ₹1,180 2.4% cashback ₹49,200 ₹1,00,000
Tata Neu Infinity HDFC ₹1,769 2.8% cashback ₹63,200 ₹3,00,000
HDFC Bank Regalia Gold ₹2,950 2.6% points ₹1,13,500 ₹4,00,000
Axis Bank Atlas ₹5,900 4.5% miles ₹1,31,100 No waiver
American Express Membership Rewards ₹5,310 2.5% points ₹2,12,400 No waiver
HDFC Bank Infinia (Metal) ₹14,750 3.3% points ₹4,47,000 ₹10,00,000

Break-even is our own arithmetic: fee including GST divided by the effective reward rate. The reward rates are our blended estimate for a mixed spend pattern. They are not the accelerated rate an issuer advertises on one category.

SBI Cashback or Amazon Pay ICICI for online spending?

The SBI Cashback card wins, and it is not close.

Dimension SBI Cashback Amazon Pay ICICI Which wins Why
Annual fee incl. GST ₹1,179 ₹0 Amazon Pay ICICI Lifetime free, no spend condition
Effective reward rate 4.2% 2.0% SBI Cashback 5% on all online spends, not one merchant
Merchant restriction None Amazon-weighted SBI Cashback Works on any online checkout
Redemption effort Auto statement credit Amazon Pay balance SBI Cashback Cash beats a closed-loop wallet
Cap ₹5,000 a cycle No stated cap Amazon Pay ICICI Matters only above ₹1 lakh online a month

Cross the break-even at ₹28,100 of annual spend and the SBI card is ahead. Cross ₹2,00,000 and the fee disappears entirely. The Amazon Pay card only wins if your online spending is small, or almost all of it sits on Amazon. It is still a good second card, because the reward never expires as a wallet balance you must spend.

Axis Atlas or HDFC Regalia Gold for travel?

Atlas wins for people who fly. Regalia Gold wins for everyone else who calls themselves a traveller.

Atlas costs ₹5,900 a year with GST and has no fee waiver. Regalia Gold costs ₹2,950 and the fee is waived at ₹4,00,000 of annual spend. So Regalia Gold can end up free. Atlas never does.

The split is redemption, not earning. Atlas earns miles you transfer into airline programmes. That transfer is where the value multiplies, and it only multiplies if you book award seats and understand partner charts. If you will not do that work, Atlas miles convert at an ordinary rate and you have paid ₹5,900 for lounge access. Regalia Gold has a 2% forex markup against Atlas at 3.5%, which is worth ₹1,500 on ₹1,00,000 of foreign spend. Use our credit card reward value calculator to price your own mix before you decide.

Which zero-fee card is best for spending abroad?

Scapia. The forex markup decides this one, and nothing else comes close.

Dimension Scapia Federal Bank IDFC FIRST Select Which wins Why
Annual fee ₹0 ₹0 Tie Both lifetime free
Forex markup 0% 1.99% Scapia ₹1,990 saved per ₹1,00,000 abroad
Reward rate 3.0% vouchers 1.8% points Scapia Higher rate, but locked to travel vouchers
Domestic lounge Unlimited, condition-linked 4 visits Scapia Only if you meet the monthly spend condition
Reward flexibility Travel vouchers only Points, broader use IDFC FIRST Select Vouchers are worthless if you stop travelling

The typical Indian card charges a 3.5% markup. On a ₹2,00,000 foreign trip that is ₹7,000, plus GST on the markup. Scapia removes it. That single line beats every reward rate on this page. The catch is real though. Scapia rewards come back as travel vouchers. The card is worth little to someone who travels once every three years. Read the detail on forex markup charges before you assume a low markup is the whole story.

Is a premium metal card ever worth ₹14,750?

Rarely. HDFC Infinia needs ₹4,47,000 of annual spend just to earn back its fee at the blended rate. That is roughly ₹37,000 a month on one card. Below that, you are paying for the metal.

The fee is waived at ₹10,00,000 of annual spend. If you genuinely clear that, Infinia is excellent and the 2% forex markup helps. If you are close but not there, you are in the worst position on this page. You pay the full ₹14,750 and do not get the waiver. The lounge access you are buying is free on the IndusInd Tiger card. Our list of lifetime free credit cards is the better starting point for most readers.

What the RBI rules give you, whichever card wins

Two protections matter when you compare cards. Under the RBI Master Direction on credit and debit cards, a closure request must be honoured within seven working days. If the issuer misses that, it owes you ₹500 for every calendar day of delay, provided nothing is outstanding. Issuing an unsolicited card or upgrade is prohibited outright, and the issuer must reverse the charges and pay you twice the value reversed.

The second is quieter and costs more. Unpaid charges, levies and taxes cannot be capitalised for compounding interest. Check your statement against that rule if you have ever revolved a balance. If you are closing a card after switching, read how credit card closure works first.

Frequently asked questions

How many credit cards should I hold?

Two is usually enough. One high-rate card for your dominant spend category, and one zero-fee backup with a low forex markup. A third only pays if it covers a category the first two miss, such as fuel. Every extra card adds an annual fee, a due date and a chance to miss a payment.

Does comparing credit cards hurt my credit score?

Comparing does not. Applying does. Each formal application creates a hard enquiry on your credit report. Several in a short window read as credit hunger to a scoring model. Shortlist on paper first, then apply to one card.

Is a higher reward rate always better?

No. A reward rate only counts if you can redeem it at face value. Cashback credits to your statement at 100%. Points redeemed for merchandise often land far below their stated value. Miles can beat both, but only if you transfer them and book award seats. Discount the headline rate by how you will actually redeem.

Should I pick a card by its lounge access?

Only if you fly often enough to use it. Lounge visits on most cards are capped per quarter and increasingly require a minimum spend in the prior quarter. The IndusInd Tiger card offers eight domestic visits at zero annual fee, which sets the price at which paid lounge access has to justify itself.

What does the fee waiver spend actually mean?

It is the annual retail spend at which the issuer refunds or drops next year’s fee. Rent, fuel, wallet loads and government payments are often excluded from that count. Check the exclusions before you plan your spending around a waiver, because the excluded categories are the ones people use to reach it.
