The honest answer is that no one can hand you a ranked list of the best mid cap funds and be telling the truth. Past returns do not repeat, and a fund that topped the last three years is usually the one carrying the most risk into the next three. What you can rank is the route. For most investors the best mid cap route is a Nifty Midcap 150 index fund, because it removes the one decision you are least equipped to make: picking the manager. An active mid cap fund is the second-best route, and it is defensible only if you will hold it through a 40 per cent drawdown without switching.
What counts as a mid cap fund in India?
This is not a marketing label. SEBI defines it.
Under SEBI circular SEBI/HO/IMD/DF3/CIR/P/2017/114 dated 6 October 2017, a mid cap company is the 101st to 250th company by full market capitalisation. Large cap is 1st to 100th. Small cap is 251st onwards. A Mid Cap Fund must hold a minimum of 65 per cent of total assets in mid cap stocks.
The list of which company sits where is not the fund manager’s opinion. AMFI publishes it, and the same circular requires it to be updated every six months on June and December data, within five calendar days of the period end. When the list changes, funds have one month to rebalance. So a stock can leave your mid cap fund because it grew, not because the manager sold it.
Which mid cap route should you take?
Ranked by how likely each is to leave an ordinary investor better off. Category rules as of the SEBI circular above; read on 7 September 2026.
| Route | Mandated mid cap exposure | Key condition | Who it suits | As of |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Mid cap index fund (Nifty Midcap 150) | Tracks the index, not the SEBI category minimum | You accept the index’s drawdown in full. No manager to blame. | Almost everyone adding mid cap exposure | 7 Sep 2026 |
| 2. Active Mid Cap Fund | Minimum 65% of total assets | You must judge the manager and the fund size, and hold through bad years | Investors who will not switch after one weak year | 7 Sep 2026 |
| 3. Large & Mid Cap Fund | Minimum 35% large cap and 35% mid cap | Gives you a smaller mid cap dose than the name suggests | Investors who want some mid cap without a dedicated fund | 7 Sep 2026 |
| 4. Flexi cap or multi cap fund | Flexi cap: 65% equity, no cap-size rule. Multi cap: 25% in each of large, mid and small | Your mid cap weight moves without you deciding | Investors who want one equity fund, not four | 7 Sep 2026 |
| 5. A basket of several mid cap funds | 65% each | Overlapping portfolios. You get the index, at active fees | Nobody. This is the most common mistake | 7 Sep 2026 |
Route five deserves the blunt entry. Three mid cap funds drawn from a 150-stock universe will hold most of the same names. You have paid three active fees to build an expensive index.
Why does the headline return not decide this?
Two reasons.
The return you see is not the return investors got
Published scheme returns assume a lump sum held from day one. Money actually arrives after a good run and leaves after a bad one. The gap between the fund’s return and the average investor’s return is the cost of that behaviour, and it is widest in exactly this category.
Mid cap risk is liquidity risk, not just price risk
A mid cap stock is thinner than a large cap. When redemptions come in size, the manager sells what can be sold, which is not always what should be sold. This is why AMFI now publishes a monthly stress test and liquidity analysis for every mid cap and small cap scheme. Look your fund up there before you invest. It is the single most useful disclosure in the category, and almost nobody reads it.
How much mid cap should you actually hold?
Start from what the whole market looks like. Mid caps are 150 companies out of the listed universe, and they are a minority of its value. A portfolio that is mostly mid cap is a bet, not a market position.
A workable frame:
- If your equity money is under three years old, mid cap exposure should be small or nil. Read best index funds first.
- If you have a ten-year horizon and an emergency fund already in place, a mid cap sleeve alongside a broad index fund is reasonable.
- If you cannot say what you would do if the fund fell 40 per cent, you do not have a plan. You have a position.
Compare against neighbouring categories before you commit. Large cap funds give you less swing, small cap funds give you more, and flexi cap funds let the manager move between all three.
What do mid cap funds cost you in fees and tax?
Two costs, and only one is visible.
The expense ratio is deducted daily from NAV, so you never see a debit. Always buy the direct plan. A regular plan pays a distributor out of your returns every year you hold it. Over a ten-year holding that gap compounds into real money. We set out the arithmetic on direct versus regular plans.
The tax is the one people forget when switching funds. Equity mutual fund units held over 12 months are long term. Long-term gains are taxed at 12.5 per cent above ₹1,25,000 a year. Short-term gains are taxed at 20 per cent. Figures as of 17 August 2026; see mutual fund taxation for how the ₹1,25,000 exemption is applied across all your equity holdings.
Switching from one mid cap fund to another is a redemption and a fresh purchase. You pay the tax to buy a very similar portfolio.
What actually goes wrong with mid cap funds
| Item | Details |
|---|---|
| Fund size. | A large mid cap fund faces the same 150-stock universe as a small one, with more money to place. Size is a headwind here in a way it is not in large cap. |
| Style drift within the rules. | The 65 per cent floor leaves 35 per cent free. Two funds in the same category can look nothing alike. Read the portfolio, not the label. |
| Starting a SIP at the top. | A SIP does not remove risk. It spreads the entry price. That is all it does. |
| Judging on one year. | The category can beat large caps for three years and then give it all back in six months. |
Frequently asked questions
What is the SEBI definition of a mid cap company?
The 101st to 250th company by full market capitalisation, per SEBI circular dated 6 October 2017. AMFI publishes the list and updates it every six months on June and December data.
How much must a mid cap fund hold in mid cap stocks?
At least 65 per cent of total assets, under the same SEBI circular. The remaining 35 per cent can sit in large caps, small caps or cash, which is why two mid cap funds can behave very differently.
Is a mid cap index fund better than an active mid cap fund?
For most people, yes. It removes manager selection, which is the decision investors get wrong most often. An active fund can beat it, but you have to pick the right one in advance and hold it through bad stretches.
How are mid cap fund gains taxed?
They are equity funds. Gains on units held over 12 months are long term and taxed at 12.5 per cent above ₹1,25,000 a year. Anything sold sooner is taxed at 20 per cent. As of 17 August 2026.
Can I hold two or three mid cap funds?
You can, and it usually adds nothing. They are drawing from the same 150 companies, so the portfolios overlap heavily. One fund, held properly, beats three held nervously.
Where can I see how risky my mid cap fund really is?
AMFI publishes a monthly stress test and liquidity analysis for mid cap and small cap schemes. It is free and scheme-wise.
