Credit Card Fees & Charges Compared

Annual fee, finance charge, late fee, cash advance and forex markup, with one issuer's full published schedule and the RBI rules behind it.

Read the tables below in a specific order. The annual fee is the smallest number on this page. The finance charge is the largest, and it only appears if you carry a balance. Everything in between is a penalty you can avoid.

The common misreading is the annual fee. Every fee on a credit card attracts 18% GST on top, and issuers quote the fee before it. A ₹1,499 card costs ₹1,769 a year. Nothing on an issuer’s comparison page shows you that.

What does a credit card actually cost per year?

Here is the annual fee for every card in our verified dataset, as of 5 September 2026, shown both before and after GST.

Two things to take from that table. A fee waiver is a spend target, so a card that waives at ₹10,00,000 is not free unless you were going to spend ₹10,00,000 anyway. And forex markup varies from 0% to 3.5%, which on a ₹3,00,000 overseas trip is a difference of ₹10,500 before GST.

What is the interest rate on a credit card in India?

It is quoted per month, which is what makes it look small. HDFC Bank’s published Most Important Terms and Conditions, updated 5 September 2026, states finance charges of 3.75% per month, which the document itself writes as 45% per annum.

That is the number that matters. Forty-five per cent is roughly three times the top of the personal loan range we track and about six times a typical home loan rate. Carrying a card balance is the most expensive borrowing most households will ever do.

Your own card may differ. Every issuer must publish this. Under paragraph 9(b)(i) of the RBI Master Direction on credit and debit cards, the annualised percentage rate and the annual fee must be shown with equal prominence. Find that line on your own card’s terms before you assume it matches.

The full published schedule for one issuer

We publish HDFC Bank’s schedule because it is the one we checked line by line. Do not assume another issuer matches it. Check your own card’s terms.

HDFC Bank credit card charges, from the MITC updated 5 September 2026
Charge Amount Condition
Finance charges, revolving credit and cash advances 3.75% per month, stated as 45% per annum Applies from the transaction date once you carry a balance
Cash advance fee 2.5% of the amount, or ₹500, whichever is higher Excludes Infinia and Infinia Metal Edition. Interest runs from the withdrawal date
Over-limit charge 2.5% of the over-limit amount, minimum ₹550 Not applicable where no over-limit facility is provided
Payment return charge 2% of the payment, minimum ₹450 Cheque return or a failed autopay attempt
Balance transfer processing 1% of the transferred amount, or ₹250, whichever is higher —
Reissue of a lost, stolen or damaged card ₹199 for non-metal cards, ₹3,500 for metal cards —
Cash processing fee ₹100 Card payments made by depositing cash at a branch or ATM
Rewards redemption fee ₹99 per redemption request Excludes several premium variants
Interest-free period 20 to 50 days Lost if the previous balance was not cleared in full, or if a cash advance was taken

The last row is the one people misread. “Up to 50 days interest free” is conditional. The MITC states plainly that it does not apply if the previous month’s balance has not been cleared in full, or if you have taken cash from an ATM. Revolve once and the grace period disappears until you clear the balance completely.

How is the late payment fee calculated?

Not on what you missed. On the size of your statement balance.

This surprises people who pay most of the bill and assume a small shortfall means a small fee. It does not. Miss the due date on a ₹60,000 statement and the fee is set by the ₹60,000, whatever you paid.

HDFC Bank late payment charges by statement balance, effective 1 August 2024, excluding GST
Outstanding balance Late payment charge
Up to ₹100 Nil
₹101 to ₹500 ₹100
₹501 to ₹1,000 ₹500
₹1,001 to ₹5,000 ₹600
₹5,001 to ₹10,000 ₹750
₹10,001 to ₹25,000 ₹900
₹25,001 to ₹50,000 ₹1,100
More than ₹50,000 ₹1,300

Add 18% GST to every figure in that column. The issuer’s own worked example in the MITC applies GST to interest and to the late payment charge together.

Which charges the RBI has already limited

Four rules in the Master Direction on credit and debit cards work in your favour, and most cardholders do not know they exist.

Unpaid charges cannot be compounded. Paragraph 9(b)(ii) states that unpaid charges, levies and taxes shall not be capitalised for charging or compounding of interest. So the issuer cannot charge interest on last month’s late fee.

Closure has a deadline. Under paragraph 8(a), a closure request must be completed within seven working days. Failure results in a penalty of ₹500 per calendar day of delay, payable to you, until the account is closed, provided there is nothing outstanding.

An unused card cannot be quietly activated. Paragraph 6(a)(vi) requires the issuer to seek your one-time-password consent if the card has not been used for more than 30 days. Without that consent, it must close the account free of cost within seven working days.

And the rate must be visible. Paragraph 9(b)(i) requires the annualised percentage rate to be shown with the same prominence as the annual fee. Our credit card RBI rules page has the full list.

Frequently asked questions

Is the annual fee on a credit card inclusive of GST?

No. Issuers quote the fee before tax and bill 18% GST on top, so a ₹2,500 fee costs ₹2,950 and a ₹12,500 fee costs ₹14,750. The same applies to late fees, interest, cash advance fees and over-limit charges. Any comparison that ignores GST understates the cost of every card by nearly a fifth.

Why am I being charged interest when I paid the minimum amount due?

Paying the minimum keeps the account current. It does not stop interest. Once you carry any balance, the interest-free period is withdrawn and finance charges run on the full outstanding, including on fresh purchases from their transaction date. See minimum amount due for the arithmetic.

How much does withdrawing cash on a credit card cost?

On HDFC Bank’s published schedule, 2.5% of the amount or ₹500, whichever is higher, plus GST. There is no grace period on cash. Finance charges apply from the date of withdrawal until the full amount is repaid. Withdrawing ₹10,000 for a month costs the fee plus roughly a month of interest at 3.75%.

Can I get the late payment fee reversed?

Sometimes, if it is your first miss and your record is otherwise clean. Call the issuer, ask for a one-time waiver, and set up autopay for at least the minimum before you hang up. There is no right to a reversal. There is also no penalty for asking.

What is the forex markup, and can I avoid it?

It is a percentage the issuer adds to every transaction in a foreign currency. In our dataset it ranges from 0% on the Scapia Federal Bank card to 3.5% on most others, with GST on the markup. On a ₹3,00,000 trip that spread is worth more than most annual fees. See forex markup charges and our forex markup calculator.
