Used car loan rates based on credit score

Two banks publish how the score moves the rate. PNB’s old car loan table is the clearest:

CIBIL score (PNB) Floating rate Fixed rate
750 and above 9.45% 10.45%
700 to 749 10.05% 11.05%
681 to 699 10.55% 11.55%

PNB gives women borrowers and PNB Pride customers (government, defence and PSU employees and pensioners) the 9.45% rate whatever their score. SBI says its 10.45% to 15.60% range for certified pre-owned cars is based on credit bureau scores, without publishing the bands. A score of 750 or more usually gets you near the bottom of a bank’s range. Our page on the credit score needed for a car loan explains how lenders read it.

What a used car loan costs

On a ₹5 lakh loan over 5 years, the rate changes the total interest by more than ₹1 lakh:

Rate Monthly EMI Total interest
9.45% ₹10,489 ₹1,29,323
10.45% ₹10,735 ₹1,44,074
13.51% ₹11,507 ₹1,90,450
17.00% ₹12,426 ₹2,45,577

A longer term cuts the EMI but adds interest. At 13.51%, stretching ₹5 lakh to 72 months lowers the EMI to ₹10,172 but raises total interest to ₹2,32,394. Few banks lend that long on a used car: SBI and Bank of Baroda cap the term at 5 years. Run your own numbers in the EMI calculator.

Used car finance fees

Valuation₹750 per case at HDFC Bank and Axis Bank (plus GST at Axis).
Documentation₹700 at both HDFC Bank and Axis Bank.
RC collection₹600 per case at both.
Bounced EMI₹450 at HDFC Bank; ₹500 + GST at Axis Bank.
Stamp duty and RTO transferat actuals, as set by your state.
ForeclosureAxis Bank 5% of principal outstanding. HDFC Bank charges 5% on loans taken from 1 December 2025; older loans pay 6%, 5% or 3% depending on how long the loan has run.
Late paymentAxis Bank charges a penal 8% a year on the overdue amount, minimum ₹300. HDFC Bank charges interest at the loan rate for the days an EMI is late.

RBI’s rule against prepayment charges covers floating-rate loans to individuals. Most used car loans are fixed-rate, so the charges above apply; a floating-rate loan such as PNB’s or Bank of Baroda’s is worth asking about if you plan to repay early.

How to get a lower rate

  1. Check your CIBIL score and fix any errors before you apply.
  2. Ask your own bank first; HDFC Bank, for one, offers preferential pricing to existing customers.
  3. Choose a newer car, since age limits cut the term you can get.
  4. Pay a larger down payment to borrow less.
  5. Get written quotes from two or three lenders and compare them with all fees added, not the headline rate alone.
