How much the lowest rate saves

On an ₹8 lakh loan over 7 years:

Rate Monthly EMI Total interest
7.45% ₹12,251 ₹2,29,075
7.60% ₹12,310 ₹2,34,052
8.40% ₹12,629 ₹2,60,836
9.00% ₹12,871 ₹2,81,186
10.00% ₹13,281 ₹3,15,600

Getting 7.45% instead of 9% saves about ₹52,000 over seven years. A 5-year term at 7.45% costs ₹1,60,681 in interest, so a shorter loan saves more than a small rate cut. Try your own numbers in the EMI calculator.

The lowest rate is not always the cheapest loan

Fees and exit charges can outweigh a small rate gap. Compare these before you sign:

Bank Processing fee Closing the loan early
Bank of Baroda ₹1,500 + GST up to ₹10 lakh; ₹2,000 + GST above Floating, individual: nil
HDFC Bank Up to 0.5%, minimum ₹3,500, maximum ₹8,000 5% of principal outstanding on loans from 1 December 2025
Axis Bank Up to 2% + GST 5% of principal outstanding + GST
Kotak Mahindra Prime 3% + ₹7,500 documentation 5.21% in the first half of the tenure; 3% after

Under RBI rules, lenders cannot charge a prepayment fee on a floating-rate loan taken by an individual for personal use. That makes a floating loan cheaper to close early or move to another lender. Bank of Baroda’s fixed-rate car loans are also free to prepay after two years.

How to get the lowest car loan rate

  1. Check your CIBIL score and correct any errors; most floor rates need 750 or 800.
  2. Start with the bank where you hold a home loan or salary account, and ask for its relationship concession.
  3. Ask each bank for its rate for your score, loan amount and tenure, not the headline rate.
  4. Ask whether the rate is fixed or floating, and what closing the loan early costs.
  5. Get the Key Fact Statement from two or three banks and compare the annual percentage rate, which includes fees.
  6. Compare the bank quote with any manufacturer or dealer scheme on the total cost, not the EMI.
