Credit Score Needed for a Car Loan in India

A car loan is secured, so the score bar is lower than for a personal loan — but no lender publishes the number, and we will not invent one.

A car loan is secured against the car. That makes the credit score bar lower than for a personal loan. The lender can repossess and sell the vehicle, so it is not relying on your score alone.

No Indian lender publishes its score cut-off. We will not print a threshold we cannot source. What we can do is explain exactly how the score is used, and what you are legally entitled to.

Why lenders ask for a lower score on a car loan

The car is hypothecated to the lender. That is recorded in the registration certificate. If you default, the lender has a claim on an asset it can sell.

That security does two things. It lowers the loss the lender expects on default. And it lets the lender lend to a thinner credit file than an unsecured product would allow.

The other lever is loan-to-value. A larger down payment cuts the lender’s exposure. A weak score with a big down payment is often approvable when the same score at full financing is not. If your file is thin, the down payment is the variable you control.

How does the score actually change your car loan?

It mostly changes price, not approval. Lenders run tiered pricing grids. A stronger band gets a lower rate. A weaker band gets the same loan at a higher rate, a shorter tenure or a lower funding percentage.

RBI does not cap what a lender may charge. Its Interest Rate on Advances Directions, 2016 give banks “the freedom to offer all categories of advances on fixed or floating interest rates”. The Directions set floors and benchmarks. They set no upper limit.

So the score does not open a door so much as set a toll. Compare quotes on current car loan rates before you accept the first one.

What are you entitled to from the credit bureaus?

More than most borrowers use. These are RBI rules, not bureau courtesies.

Rule Figure Applies to Source
Credit information updated four times a month 9th, 16th, 23rd and last day of each month All lenders and bureaus RBI amendment 4 Dec 2025, effective 1 Jul 2026
Lender must submit data Within 4 calendar days (9th, 16th, 23rd); month-end file by the 5th All credit institutions RBI amendment 4 Dec 2025
Bureau must ingest data Within 3 calendar days of receipt All credit bureaus RBI amendment 4 Dec 2025
Free full credit report Once a year, per bureau Every individual RBI Master Direction, 6 Jan 2025
Compensation for a late complaint fix ₹100 per calendar day after 30 days Bureaus and lenders RBI Master Direction, 6 Jan 2025
Alert when your report is pulled SMS or email, each access Every individual RBI Master Direction, 6 Jan 2025

The reporting-frequency rule is the practical one. Before 2025, a closed loan could sit on your report for weeks. Since 1 July 2026 lenders report four times a month, so a correction shows up faster. Apply after the update, not before.

Will the lender tell you why you were rejected?

Probably not, and that is a real gap. RBI’s Fair Practices Code for Lenders of 5 May 2003 requires lenders to convey the main reasons for rejection in writing. But as drafted that duty applies to loan applications up to ₹2,00,000.

Most car loans are larger than that. So the written-reason obligation does not cover them. Ask anyway, in writing, and pull your own report to work it out. Our page on what moves a credit score covers the usual causes.

If the report itself is wrong, dispute it. The bureau owes you ₹100 a day if it misses the 30-day resolution window. See how to raise a dispute.

Can you prepay a car loan without a penalty?

Sometimes. The rule turns on whether your rate floats.

RBI’s 2014 circular barred foreclosure charges on floating rate term loans to individual borrowers. The Reserve Bank of India (Pre-payment Charges on Loans) Directions, 2025, dated 2 July 2025, went further. For loans sanctioned or renewed on or after 1 January 2026, a regulated entity “shall not levy pre-payment charges” on floating rate loans to individuals for non-business purposes. There is no minimum lock-in.

Here is the catch. Most car loans in India are fixed rate. A fixed rate loan sits outside that protection. Ask for the foreclosure clause before you sign, not when you want to close.

Frequently asked questions

What credit score do I need for a car loan?

No lender publishes one, so any specific figure you read is a guess. A car loan is secured, so the bar is lower than for a personal loan. Expect the score to change your rate, tenure and funding percentage more than it changes approval.

Can I get a car loan with no credit history?

Often yes, with a larger down payment or a co-applicant. The lender is pricing an asset it can repossess. A first-time borrower with stable income and 30% down is a very different file from the same person seeking unsecured credit.

How often is my credit report updated now?

Four times a month. Since 1 July 2026, RBI has required lenders and bureaus to update as on the 9th, 16th, 23rd and last day of each month. Lenders submit the 9th, 16th and 23rd updates within four days and the month-end file by the 5th, and bureaus ingest within three days.

Does checking my own score lower it?

No. You are entitled to one free full credit report a year from each bureau. Bureaus must also alert you when a lender pulls your report, which is how you spot an application you did not make.

Is a used car loan harder to get?

Usually. The collateral is worth less and depreciates faster, so lenders fund a smaller share and price higher. See used car loans and compare against new car loan options.
