To apply for a credit card online, open the card issuer’s own website or app, pick one card, fill in the online application form with your PAN, date of birth, mobile number and income details, then finish video KYC or the document check. The bank pulls your credit report and decides; a comparison site only passes your form to the bank.
Check your own credit report before you press submit, and apply for one card at a time. Every application is recorded on your credit file. The consumer rules below come from RBI directions, not bank policy, and they are enforceable.
What documents do you need to apply for a credit card?
Issuers ask for three things. Identity, address and the ability to repay.
| Item | Details |
|---|---|
| Identity and address. | PAN is mandatory. Aadhaar, passport, voter ID or driving licence covers KYC. Most issuers now do video KYC, so no courier is involved. |
| Income proof, if salaried. | Usually the last three salary slips and six months of bank statements. |
| Income proof, if self-employed. | Usually the last two ITRs with computation, plus bank statements. Expect a longer look. |
| An existing relationship, sometimes. | Pre-approved offers skip most of this. They are also the offers most likely to be approved. |
If you have no credit history at all, a fixed deposit gives you a way in. That route is covered on our page on secured credit cards.
What are the RBI rules on credit card issuance?
For banks, the governing text is now the Reserve Bank of India (Commercial Banks – Credit Cards and Debit Cards: Issuance and Conduct) Directions, 2025, issued on 28 November 2025. It consolidated and replaced the 2022 Master Direction on credit and debit cards. The table below uses its paragraph numbers. Every figure is from those Directions unless the row says otherwise.
| Rule or limit | Figure | Applies to | Statutory source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Consent to issue must be explicit, never implied | No time limit | Every card issued | Card Directions 2025, para 11(8) |
| Unsolicited cards and unsolicited upgrades are prohibited | Penalty: twice the charges reversed | Card billed without your consent | Card Directions 2025, para 11(4) |
| Issuer must seek OTP consent to activate a card you left unused | After 30 days from issue | New cards | Card Directions 2025, para 11(6) |
| No OTP consent means the account is closed at no cost | Within 7 working days | Unactivated new cards | Card Directions 2025, para 11(6) |
| Nothing is reported to credit bureaus before the card is activated | No exceptions stated | New card accounts | Card Directions 2025, para 11(7) |
| Most Important Terms and Conditions must be given to you | At onboarding | Every cardholder | Card Directions 2025, para 11(2) |
| No unilateral upgrade and no unilateral limit increase | Explicit consent required | Existing cards | Card Directions 2025, para 34 |
| Closure request must be honoured | 7 working days, then ₹500 per calendar day | Accounts with dues cleared | Card Directions 2025, para 19 |
| Wrong credit report data must be corrected | ₹100 per calendar day beyond 30 days | Disputes you raise with a bureau | Credit Information Reporting Directions 2025, para 35 |
The last row matters before you apply. The compensation framework first ran from 26 April 2024 and now sits in para 35 of the RBI (Commercial Banks – Credit Information Reporting) Directions, 2025. The lender has 21 calendar days to send corrected data and the bureau has 30 calendar days overall. Miss that and you are owed ₹100 for each further day, paid into your bank account within five working days. Fix a wrong default entry before you apply, not after a rejection.
How does the application actually move?
| # | Item | Details |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | You submit the form. | Online this takes minutes. PAN and mobile drive everything. |
| 2 | The issuer pulls your credit report. | This is a hard enquiry and it is recorded. |
| 3 | Income and employer checks run. | Account aggregator consent or uploaded statements feed this. |
| 4 | Video KYC. | Have your PAN card and a signature ready. Poor light fails more calls than bad credit does. |
| 5 | Decision and limit assignment. | Approval and the limit are two separate calls. You can be approved on a limit you did not want. |
| 6 | Dispatch and activation. | The 30-day OTP rule above starts from the date of issue. |
What triggers a credit card rejection?
Banks do not publish their cut-offs, so treat any site quoting an exact approval score with suspicion. What is observable is the set of things underwriting looks at. In rough order of how often they bite:
Too many recent applications
Each application is a hard enquiry. A cluster of them in a few weeks reads as distress, whatever your score says. Space applications out. One at a time.
A thin file, not a bad file
No loan, no card, no history means the model has nothing to score. This is a very common rejection for first-time applicants and it is not a black mark. Read our credit card eligibility page for what to do instead.
Existing unsecured obligations
The bank adds your current card limits and personal loan EMIs to the new exposure. If that total looks heavy against your income, the file fails. Closing an unused card can help. Closing your oldest card usually does not.
Data that does not match
Name spelling, PAN mismatch, an address the bank cannot verify, an employer not on the bank’s approved list. These are boring and they kill applications daily.
An error on your credit report
A closed loan showing as live, or somebody else’s default on your PAN. This is fixable, and RBI now compensates you for delay in fixing it.
If you were rejected, wait. Do not apply to three more banks the same week. The same logic applies across products, and we set it out in detail for personal loan rejection reasons.
What should you do before you press submit?
Pull your own credit report and read it. Checking your own report is a soft enquiry and does not affect your score. Then pick the card on the basis of the fee you will actually pay and the reward you will actually earn, not the launch offer. Our guide on how to choose a credit card covers that, and the full schedule of what a card costs is on credit card charges.
One uncomfortable point. A comparison site that promises “instant approval” is not the party approving you. Only the issuer approves. Any page claiming a guaranteed decision is selling a lead.
Frequently asked questions
How do I apply online for a credit card?
Go to the issuer’s official website or app, choose a card and click Apply Now. Enter your PAN, date of birth, mobile number and income details, then complete video KYC or upload the documents the bank asks for.
How long does a credit card application take?
The online form takes minutes, but approval does not. SBI Card, for example, says its executives call within 2 working days of online approval to collect documents, and processing can take up to 21 days after that.
How do I track my credit card application status?
Use the track-application option on the issuer’s website, usually with your application number or your PAN and date of birth. Only the issuer can tell you the real status.
Does applying for a credit card lower my credit score?
The application creates a hard enquiry on your report. One enquiry is minor. Several in a short window is the part that hurts. Checking your own report does not count.
Can a bank issue me a credit card I never asked for?
No. Para 11(4) of RBI’s 2025 card Directions for banks prohibits unsolicited cards and unsolicited upgrades. If you are billed for one, the issuer must reverse the charge and pay you twice the amount reversed.
I never activated my new card. What happens?
After 30 days from issue, the bank must seek your OTP consent to activate it. If you do not give it, the bank must close the account free of charge within seven working days. Nothing is reported to the bureaus before activation.
How long does the bank have to close my card?
Seven working days from the request, once dues are paid. Beyond that the issuer owes you ₹500 for each calendar day of delay. See credit card closure for how to file the request so the clock starts.
Can I apply with no income proof?
Not for a normal card. A card backed by a fixed deposit is the standard route, because the deposit is the security. Student and add-on cards are the other two doors.
